📚 Year 8 OCR Economics: Vocabulary & Terminology Memory Guide | Year 8 OCR
Mastering key vocabulary is the first step to understanding Economics. This guide provides simple definitions and clever memory tricks for the most important terms in the Year 8 OCR syllabus.
1. Scarcity and the Economic Problem |
Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem: our unlimited wants constantly exceed the limited resources available to satisfy them.
To remember 'scarcity', link it to 'scarce'. When something is scarce, there isn't enough to go around, which forces us to make choices.
Needs are essential for survival — think water, food, shelter. Wants are things we desire but can live without, like a new phone or a cinema ticket.
The economic problem asks three big questions: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce?
Imagine a desert island with only a few coconuts. You have to choose whether to eat them now or save them for later — that's the economic problem in action.
2. The Basic Law of Demand |
Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices.
The law of demand states that, all else being equal, as the price of a product rises, the quantity demanded falls — and vice versa.
Mnemonic: 'D' for demand, 'D' for downward. A demand curve always slopes downwards from left to right.
Think of your own pocket money. If the price of a chocolate bar doubles, you probably buy fewer. That negative relationship between price and quantity demanded is the core of demand theory.
A shift in demand means something other than price has changed — perhaps a trend, or your income. A movement along the curve only happens when the price itself changes.
3. The Basic Law of Supply |
Supply is the quantity of a product that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices over a certain period.
The law of supply says that as the price of a good increases, the quantity supplied also increases, assuming other factors stay constant.
Remember: 'S' for supply, 'S' for sloping up. A supply curve typically slopes upwards because higher prices give producers an incentive to make more.
Think of a lemonade stand. If customers are willing to pay more per cup, you will be eager to squeeze more lemons and sell more cups.
A change in supply is not the same as a change in quantity supplied. Supply shifts when costs, technology or the number of sellers change, whereas quantity supplied changes only because of a price change.
4. Markets and Equilibrium |
A market is any place or mechanism where buyers and sellers meet to exchange goods and services — it doesn't have to be a physical location.
Market equilibrium occurs at the price where the quantity demanded exactly equals the quantity supplied. There is no tendency for change.
Visual memory: imagine two lines, demand and supply, crossing like an 'X'. The crossing point is equilibrium — E for 'equal'.
If the current price is above equilibrium, a surplus (excess supply) appears because sellers offer more than buyers want. Prices will tend to fall.
If the price is below equilibrium, a shortage (excess demand) occurs — customers want to buy more than is available. Sellers can then raise prices.
Tip: 'surplus' sounds like 'surplus' — extra stuff. Shortage simply means 'not enough'.
5. The Four Factors of Production |
Resources, or factors of production, are the inputs used to produce goods and services. They are classified into four groups: land, labour, capital and enterprise.
Land includes all natural resources — soil, minerals, water, forests. Think 'gifts of nature'.
Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production. From factory workers to teachers, it is the workforce.
Capital means man-made tools, machinery and buildings used to produce other goods. It is not the money itself, but the equipment that money buys.
Enterprise is the willingness and ability to take risks and combine the other three factors to create a business. Entrepreneurs are the driving force.
Memory trick: C-E-L-L — Capital, Enterprise, Land, Labour. Think of a 'CELL' of production.
6. Opportunity Cost |
Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when making a choice. It is the real cost of any decision.
Economists say 'there is no such thing as a free lunch' because every choice involves a sacrifice — even if you don't pay money.
To calculate opportunity cost, always ask: 'What am I giving up?' If you spend an hour studying economics instead of playing football, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment and fitness you miss.
Decision-making grid: list all options, eliminate the impossible ones, then compare the next best alternative to your chosen option. The value of that alternative is the opportunity cost.
A trade-off is related but broader — it is the balance between two things where you can't have both at the same time. Opportunity cost is the single most valuable trade-off.
7. Functions of Money |
Money is anything that is widely accepted as a means of payment. It must fulfil three main functions to work properly.
First, medium of exchange: money allows us to trade goods and services without bartering. You give the shopkeeper coins, the shopkeeper gives you a snack — simple.
Second, store of value: money can be saved and used later. A £10 note today should still buy roughly the same amount a month later if prices are stable.
Third, unit of account: money provides a standard measure of value. We can compare the worth of a cinema ticket (£8) with a book (£6) easily because both are priced in pounds.
Mnemonic: M.U.S. — Medium of exchange, Unit of account, Store of value. Think 'money MUST be useful' — MUS.
助记符:M.U.S.——交换媒介(Medium of exchange)、计价单位(Unit of account)、价值储藏(Store of value)。可以想成'money MUST be useful'。
8. Types of Economic Systems |
An economic system determines how a country answers the three economic questions: what, how and for whom to produce.
In a market economy, decisions are made by private individuals and firms through the forces of demand and supply. Prices are the signals. Think of the UK or the USA.
A command economy relies on the government to plan and direct all production. The state owns most resources. Historical examples include the former Soviet Union.
Most real-world economies are mixed economies, blending market forces with government intervention. The UK has a mixed economy — the government provides healthcare and education, but markets supply most goods.
Memory image: Market economy as a 'free-range chicken', command economy as a 'caged chicken', and mixed economy as a chicken with a run — some freedom, some rules.
9. Businesses and Profit |
Entrepreneurs set up businesses to organise the other factors of production and take financial risks. Their main incentive is profit.
Profit is the difference between revenue (money received from sales) and costs (money spent on inputs). If a bakery sells £500 worth of bread but its ingredients and wages cost £350, the profit is £150.
cost = fixed costs + variable costs. These simple formulas help businesses make decisions.
Types of business organisation include sole traders, partnerships and companies. A sole trader is owned by one person; a partnership by two or more who share profits.
A company is a separate legal entity from its owners. 'Limited' means shareholders' liability is limited to their investment, which encourages risk-taking.
10. International Trade |
Trade happens because countries are not equally good at producing everything. Buying and selling across borders allows nations to specialise.
Exports are goods and services sold to other countries. Imports are goods and services bought from abroad.
The concept of comparative advantage suggests that a country should produce the goods it can make at a lower opportunity cost, and trade for the rest.
For example, if the UK can produce wool more efficiently than bananas, it should focus on wool and import bananas from a tropical country. Both sides gain from the exchange.
Trade barriers like tariffs (taxes on imports) and quotas (limits on quantity) can protect domestic industries but often make goods more expensive for consumers.
Memory aid: 'X' marks the spot for exports — goods leave your country. 'I' stands for 'in' — imports come in. 'Comparative' sounds like 'compare': compare which good you give up less to produce.
