1. Dynamics | 力度
Piano (p) means soft, while forte (f) means loud. These are the core dynamic markings, and they can be extended with pianissimo (pp) for very soft and fortissimo (ff) for very loud.
The middle ground is covered by mezzo-piano (mp) – moderately soft – and mezzo-forte (mf) – moderately loud. These add nuance between the extremes.
Gradual changes are shown by crescendo (cresc.) – getting gradually louder – and diminuendo (dim.) – getting gradually softer. You may also see decrescendo, which means the same as diminuendo.
For sudden emphasis, composers use sforzando (sfz) – a sharp, strong accent – or fortepiano (fp), meaning loud then immediately soft.
2. Tempo | 速度
Very slow tempos include Largo (broad, very slow) and Adagio (slow, leisurely). A piece marked Grave is even slower and more solemn.
非常慢的速度包括 Largo(宽广、极慢)和 Adagio(缓慢、悠闲)。
Andante means at a walking pace, while Moderato is a comfortable moderate speed. Allegretto is slightly slower than Allegro but still with a lively feel.
Fast tempos: Allegro (fast, cheerful), Vivace (lively, brisk) and Presto (very fast). You might also encounter Prestissimo for an even faster extreme.
快速:Allegro(快板、欢快),Vivace(活泼、轻快)和 Presto(急板)。
Changes in tempo are just as important: accelerando (accel.) means gradually speeding up; ritardando (rit.) means gradually slowing down. Ritenuto is a more sudden slowing. A tempo tells you to return to the original speed after a change. Rubato involves a flexible, expressive stretching of the tempo.
3. Articulation & Playing Techniques |
Staccato notes are detached and short, indicated by a dot above or below the note. Legato means smooth and connected, often shown with a slur line.
Legato(连奏)是平滑连贯的,常以连线表示。
Tenuto directs you to hold the note for its full value, sometimes with a slight emphasis. An accent (>) means to play the note louder and with a sharper attack, while a marcato (^) is even more forceful and marked.
On string instruments, pizzicato tells the player to pluck the strings with fingers, while arco means to use the bow again. For vocal and wind music, a slur groups notes into a smooth phrase.
4. Pitch & Melodic Features |
Conjunct movement moves in small, stepwise intervals, creating smooth melodies. Disjunct movement uses leaps, producing a more angular and dramatic character.
Conjunct(级进)旋律以小幅二度移动,形成平滑的旋律。
Melodies can be built from scales: scalic passages run up and down a scale. When the notes outline a triad, the melody is described as triadic. Chromatic movement uses notes outside the key, adding colour and tension.
当音符构成三和弦轮廓时,旋律称为 triadic(分解和弦式)。Chromatic(半音阶)移动使用调外音,增加色彩和张力。
The range is the distance between the lowest and highest notes, while tessitura describes where the majority of notes lie within that range. Register refers to a specific pitch area, such as high, middle or low.
Range(音域)是最低与最高音之间的距离,而 tessitura(常用音域)描述大部分音符所在的范围。
Repeating melodic ideas: an ostinato is a short, persistently repeated pattern. A motif is a distinctive melodic or rhythmic fragment that becomes a building block. A sequence repeats a phrase at a different pitch.
旋律型反复:ostinato(固定音型)是一再重复的短小模式。 而 sequence(模进)是在不同音高上重复乐句。
5. Harmony & Tonality |
A triad is a three-note chord built from the root, third and fifth. The tonic is the home note of a key; the dominant is the fifth degree, creating tension that wants to resolve back to the tonic. The subdominant is the fourth degree.
Tonic(主音)是调性的中心音;dominant(属音)是五级音,制造想要解决回主音的张力。Subdominant(下属音)是四级音。
Cadences are the punctuation of music: a perfect cadence (V-I) sounds complete and final; a plagal cadence (IV-I) is the 'Amen' cadence; an imperfect cadence ends on V, sounding unfinished; an interrupted cadence (V-vi) surprises by moving to a minor chord instead of I.
Cadences(终止式)是音乐的标点:perfect cadence(正格终止 V-I)听起来完满结束;plagal cadence(变格终止 IV-I)是“阿门”终止;imperfect cadence(半终止)停在 V,听感觉未完;interrupted cadence(阻碍终止 V-vi)意外地走向 vi 小和弦而非 I。
Tonality can be major (bright, happy) or minor (sadder, darker). Music may also be modal (using old church modes) or atonal (no clear tonal centre). A modulation is a key change within a piece.
Tonality(调性)可以是 major(大调,明亮愉快)或 minor(小调,悲伤暗淡)。音乐也可以为 modal(调式,使用古老教会调式)或 atonal(无调性)。Modulation(转调)是作品中调性的变化。
A pedal note is a sustained or repeated note, often in the bass, while the harmonies change above it. A drone is a continuous held note or notes, common in folk styles. Consonance sounds stable; dissonance creates tension.
Drone(嗡鸣低音)是连续保持的音,常见于民间音乐。Consonance(协和)听起来稳定;dissonance(不协和)制造紧张。
6. Texture | 织体
Monophonic texture has a single melodic line with no accompaniment – think of a solo singer or all players in unison.
Monophonic(单音织体)只有一条旋律线,无伴奏——例如独唱或所有人齐奏。
Homophonic texture features a melody supported by chords, often called 'melody and accompaniment'. This is the most common texture in songs.
Homophonic(主调织体)是一条旋律配以和弦支撑,常被称为“旋律与伴奏”。
Polyphonic (or contrapuntal) texture has two or more independent melodies woven together. Imitation happens when one part echoes a melodic idea shortly after another. In a canon, all parts strictly imitate after a set time interval.
Polyphonic(复调织体)有两条或更多独立旋律交织在一起。
Heterophonic texture occurs when two or more parts play the same melody but with slight variations, common in some world music traditions. Thick texture uses many instruments or layered parts; thin texture has few.
Thick(厚织体)使用许多乐器或声部层叠;thin(薄织体)则只有很少声部。
Unison means all parts sing or play exactly the same notes; octaves doubles the melody at an octave apart, adding depth without new harmony.
Unison(齐奏/齐唱)是所有声部演奏完全相同的音;octaves(八度重叠)则在八度上重复旋律,增加深度而不引入新的和声。
7. Structure & Form |
Binary form has two sections (A B), each often repeated. Ternary form is three-part (A B A), where the opening section returns after a contrasting middle.
Rondo form alternates a recurring A theme with contrasting episodes: ABACA is typical. Theme and variations presents a theme
