1. Forces: Contact and Non-contact |
A force is a push or a pull that can change an object's speed, shape or direction. It is measured in newtons (N) using a force meter.
Contact forces act only when objects are touching. Examples include friction, air resistance and tension in a rope.
Non-contact forces act over a distance without direct contact. Gravity, magnetism and electrostatic force are examples.
- Friction: opposes motion between sliding surfaces and produces heat.
- Gravity: pulls all objects with mass towards each other.
- Magnetic force: acts between magnets or magnetic materials.
2. Gravity, Weight and Mass |
Mass is the amount of matter in an object and is measured in kilograms (kg). Mass never changes no matter where you are.
Weight is the force of gravity acting on an object's mass. Weight is measured in newtons (N) and changes with the strength of gravity.
weight = mass × gravitational field strength (W = m × g)
On Earth, the gravitational field strength g is about 10 N/kg. So a 5 kg object weighs 50 N.
3. Speed and Distance–Time Graphs |
Speed tells you how fast an object moves; it is the distance travelled in a certain time. Average speed is calculated as:
speed = distance ÷ time (s = d ÷ t)
Typical units are metres per second (m/s) or kilometres per hour (km/h). A car covering 100 km in 2 hours has an average speed of 50 km/h.
In a distance–time graph, the gradient (slope) represents speed. A horizontal line means the object is stationary; a straight sloping line indicates constant speed; a curved line shows acceleration.
| Line shape | Meaning |
| Horizontal | Object stopped |
| Straight slope | Constant speed |
| Curve getting steeper | Speeding up (accelerating) |
4. Energy Stores and Transfers |
Energy is the ability to do work and is measured in joules (J). It can be stored in various ways: kinetic (moving objects), thermal (hot objects), chemical (food, fuels), gravitational potential (high up objects) and elastic potential (stretched springs).
Energy can be transferred between stores. The main transfer pathways are mechanically (by forces), electrically (by current), by heating or by radiation (light and sound).
The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or converted from one store to another.
5. Electrical Circuits and Components |
An electric circuit needs a complete loop of conducting material for current to flow. Current (I) is the rate of flow of charge and is measured in amperes (A).
current = charge ÷ time (I = Q ÷ t)
Common circuit symbols include a cell, battery, switch, lamp, resistor, variable resistor, ammeter and voltmeter. You must be able to draw and recognise these symbols.
An ammeter is connected in series to measure current, while a voltmeter is connected in parallel to measure potential difference (voltage) across a component.
6. Current, Voltage and Resistance |
Potential difference (voltage) is the energy transferred per unit of charge and is measured in volts (V). It is the 'push' that makes charges move.
Resistance (R) tells us how difficult it is for current to flow and is measured in ohms (Ω). A thin or long wire has higher resistance.
resistance = voltage ÷ current (R = V ÷ I)
In a series circuit, the current is the same everywhere. The total resistance is the sum of individual resistances. In a parallel circuit, the current divides among the branches, and the total resistance is less than the smallest branch resistance.
7. Magnetism and Magnetic Fields |
A magnet has a north pole and a south pole. Like poles repel each other, unlike poles attract. The magnetic field is strongest at the poles.
A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where magnetic forces act. Field lines go from north to south outside the magnet. The closer the lines, the stronger the field.
An electromagnet is made by passing an electric current through a coil of wire wrapped around a soft iron core. Its strength can be increased by adding more turns to the coil, increasing the current, or using an iron core.
Electromagnets are useful because they can be switched on and off; they are used in scrapyard cranes, electric bells and relays.
8. Sound Waves and Hearing |
Sound is a longitudinal wave caused by vibrating objects. The vibrations pass through a medium (solid, liquid or gas) as compressions and rarefactions.
Sound cannot travel in a vacuum because there are no particles to carry the vibrations. Its speed is fastest in solids and slowest in gases.
| Property | Wave description | What we hear |

Humans can hear frequencies from about 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz. Sounds above this are ultrasound; sounds below are infrasound.
9. Light and Reflection |
× 10⁸ m/s) in a vacuum. It can be reflected, refracted or absorbed by different materials.
The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, both measured from the normal (a line at 90° to the surface).
angle of incidence = angle of reflection
Smooth surfaces give regular reflection, producing a clear image. Rough surfaces scatter light in many directions, causing diffuse reflection.
10. States of Matter and the Particle Model |
Matter exists as solid, liquid or gas. The particle model explains the properties of these states in terms of particle arrangement and movement.
- Solid: particles packed closely in fixed positions, only vibrating. Solids have a fixed shape and volume.
- Liquid: particles close together but can move past each other. Liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of the container.
- Gas: particles are far apart and move quickly in all directions. Gases have no fixed shape or volume and can be compressed.
Changing state involves adding or removing energy. Melting, boiling and sublimation require energy; freezing, condensing and deposition release energy. Mass is conserved during changes of state.

12. Working Scientifically: Practical Skills and Safety |
In every experiment, you must identify the independent variable (what you change), dependent variable (what you measure) and control variables (what you keep the same) to ensure a fair test.
A hypothesis is a testable prediction, often written as "If... then... because...". Results should be presented in clearly labelled tables and then plotted as graphs (bar charts or line graphs).

When drawing a graph, remember SLAP: Scale, Labels, Axis, Plot. Draw a line of best fit where appropriate and use the gradient to determine relationships.
Always assess risks and follow safety rules: wear safety goggles, tie back long hair, and handle hot objects and electrical circuits with care. Report any accidents immediately.
