Admissions tests at G5 universities are used by a specific set of courses - most commonly Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Medicine and related joint honours. They are designed either by the universities themselves or by an external awarding body, and their purpose is to assess subject potential and thinking ability in greater depth, and with greater fairness, than school grades alone can.

3. STEP: The Mathematics Admissions Test | STEP数学入学测试
STEP is a standardised written paper required by Cambridge, Warwick and a number of other highly selective mathematics and mathematics-related courses. Each paper lasts 3 hours and typically contains 12 extended questions covering pure mathematics, mechanics and probability and statistics; candidates must answer at least 6 of them. Older papers contained 13 questions, and some archives still circulate in that format.

The questions are not arranged randomly. They are ordered roughly in increasing difficulty, and the later items are designed to challenge the depth of a candidate's mathematical thinking rather than the speed of routine calculation. Because you only need to answer six questions well, question selection is itself a skill.

Since 2021 the suite has consisted of STEP 2 and STEP 3 only; STEP 1 was discontinued. STEP 2 is based on A-Level Mathematics content, while STEP 3 extends into Further Mathematics material, so the paper you sit depends on the offer you receive.

In marking, each question is worth a maximum of 20 marks, but only the six highest-scoring answers are added together to produce the final total. The maximum possible score is therefore 120.

STEP total = 6 × 20 = 120 marks
Results are reported as grades rather than raw marks: S (Outstanding), 1 (Very Good), 2 (Good), 3 (Satisfactory) and U (Unclassified). Achieving the "excellent" band generally means that at least four of your six chosen questions earned high marks, with the remaining answers still respectable.
