📚 Italian Language in 2025: Status and Usage Worldwide | 2025年意大利语的地位及使用情况怎么样?
Italian is spoken by around 66 million people worldwide, and its status and internal diversity go far beyond what most learners expect. It is not merely a single national language: it carries a long history of political change, literary prestige and sharp regional variation, and the key to understanding it lies in the tension between its standard form and its local varieties.
全球约有6600万使用者使用意大利语,其地位和多样性远超许多人的认知。它不只是一门国家语言,还承载着复杂的历史变迁与区域差异,理解它的关键在于把握其标准形式和地方变体之间的张力。
1. Global Footprint in 2025 | 2025年意大利语的全球规模
In 2025 Italian remains the first language of roughly 66 million people. The overwhelming majority live in Italy itself, but the language is also native to communities in Switzerland, San Marino and Vatican City, and to large diaspora populations in Argentina, Brazil, the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom. A further seven to eight million people use it as a second or heritage language.
2025年,全球约有6600万人以意大利语为第一语言。绝大多数使用者生活在意大利本土,但同时它也是瑞士、圣马力诺和梵蒂冈城部分社区的本族语,并在阿根廷、巴西、美国、加拿大、澳大利亚、德国和英国的意大利裔群体中广泛传承。另有约七八百万人把它作为第二语言或传承语言使用。
By number of native speakers, Italian ranks within the world's top twenty-five languages, and it is one of the larger languages of the European Union. Its cultural weight, however, is far greater than its demographic weight: opera, cinema, design, fashion, classical music notation and a large part of Western art history are archived in Italian.
就母语人口数量而言,意大利语位居全球前二十五种语言之列,也是欧盟内部规模较大的语言之一。但它的文化影响力远超其人口比重:歌剧、电影、设计、时尚、古典音乐术语以及西方艺术史的很大一部分,都以意大利语存档与传播。
2. How Standard Italian Was Formed | 标准意大利语的形成
Standard Italian is rooted mainly in the dialects of Tuscany, and above all in Florentine. This choice was driven by the prestige of three fourteenth-century writers: Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. Their works gave Florentine such a high literary status that it became the model for later written and eventually spoken Italian.
标准意大利语主要以托斯卡纳地区、特别是佛罗伦萨的方言为根基。这种选择深受十四世纪三位文学家但丁、彼特拉克和薄伽丘作品的影响,他们的著作使佛罗伦萨方言获得了崇高的文学地位,为日后统一的书面语乃至口语奠定了基础。
The process was extremely slow. In 1525 Pietro Bembo's dialogue Prose della volgar lingua codified Tuscan as the literary model for the whole peninsula, but at the moment of political unification in 1861 only a small minority of Italians - perhaps two or three per cent - could actually speak the standard language. It spread nationally only after unification, through compulsory schooling, internal migration, and later through radio and television, becoming the essential official language of the Italian Republic.
这一进程极为漫长。1525年,本博的《俗语论》把托斯卡纳语确立为整个半岛的文学典范,但到1861年意大利实现政治统一时,真正能说标准语的意大利人只是极少数,可能仅占人口的百分之二到三。标准语是在统一之后借助义务教育、国内人口流动以及后来的广播和电视才逐步向全国推广,并最终成为意大利共和国至关重要的官方语言。
3. Standard versus Dialect: The Core Tension | 标准语与方言:核心张力
Modern Italy lives in a state of dilalia: standard Italian and regional varieties coexist in the same community, and speakers switch between them according to situation and social distance. Alongside the dialects proper there is also italiano regionale - regional Italian - a form of the standard language coloured by local pronunciation, vocabulary and syntax.
当代意大利处于一种双重语言并存的状态:标准意大利语与地方变体在同一语言社区中共存,使用者依据场合和社会距离在两者之间切换。除了严格意义上的方言之外,还存在"区域意大利语",即带有地方发音、词汇和句法色彩的标准语变体。
Survey data collected by ISTAT show that Italian is now the dominant language in most domains, but dialect use has not disappeared. Roughly a third of Italians still report speaking a dialect at home with family, and a minority - somewhere around one in seven - use it predominantly. Dialect carries strong local identity and is common in humour, song, food vocabulary and informal speech.
意大利国家统计局的调查数据显示,意大利语如今在大多数场合占据主导地位,但方言并未消失。大约三分之一的意大利人仍表示在家中与家人说方言,其中约七分之一的人以方言为主。方言承载着强烈的地方认同,在幽默、歌曲、饮食词汇和 informal 口语中十分常见。
4. The Main Dialect Branches | 主要方言分支
Italian dialects show remarkable diversity and can be grouped into several broad branches. The northern group includes Piedmontese, Lombard and Venetian. The central group is centred on Tuscan and also includes Roman. The southern group includes Neapolitan, Sicilian and Sardinian.
| Central 中部 | Tuscan, Roman 托斯卡纳语、罗马方言 | Base of the standard 标准语的基础 |
| Southern 南部 | Neapolitan, Sicilian, Sardinian 那不勒斯语、西西里语、撒丁语 | Sardinian is often treated as a separate Romance language 撒丁语常被视为独立的罗曼语 |
The differences between these varieties and the standard can be so large that speakers from different regions may struggle to understand each other directly. Linguistically, several of them are better described as autonomous Romance languages rather than as deviations from Italian, and UNESCO classifies some, such as Sardinian and Griko, as endangered.
这些方言与标准语之间的差异有时非常巨大,以至于不同地区的使用者可能难以直接沟通。从语言学角度看,其中不少方言更适合被看作自主的罗曼语族语言,而非意大利语的"偏离形式";联合国教科文组织已将撒丁语、格里科语等列为濒危语言。
5. Official Status and Geographic Reach | 官方地位与使用范围
Italian is the official language of Italy, of San Marino and of Vatican City. In Switzerland it is a national language alongside German, French and Romansh, and an official language in the canton of Ticino and in parts of Graubünden. Swiss census figures report around 666,000 habitual speakers of Italian nationwide.
意大利语是意大利、圣马力诺和梵蒂冈城的官方语言。在瑞士,它与德语、法语和罗曼什语并列为国语,并在提契诺州以及格劳宾登州的部分地区具有官方地位。瑞士人口普查数据显示,全国约有66.6万人以意大利语为常用语言。
Historically, Italian was also used in Corsica, in Malta and in Libya, where it was an official or administrative language during different periods. Today its daily use in those places has largely disappeared; it survives only in small communities, in place names, in legal and musical vocabulary, or as cultural heritage studied by scholars. Italian also has co-official status in parts of Slovenia and in Istria County, Croatia.
历史上,意大利语还曾在科西嘉岛、马耳他和利比亚被使用,在不同时期充当官方或行政语言。如今在这些地区,它的日常使用已基本消失,仅存于少数社区、地名、法律与音乐词汇之中,或作为文化遗产被研究。此外,意大利语在斯洛文尼亚部分地区和克罗地亚的伊斯特拉县享有共同官方地位。
6. Italian in the European Union and Beyond | 意大利语在欧盟与国际机构中的地位
Italian has been an official language of the European institutions since 1958, and it is one of the twenty-four official languages of the European Union in 2025. That status guarantees translation and interpretation rights, gives Italian a place in EU law, and keeps the language present in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.
自1958年起,意大利语就是欧洲共同体的官方语言之一,到2025年,它仍是欧盟二十四门官方语言之一。这一地位保障了翻译与口译权利,使意大利语在欧盟法律中占有一席之地,也让它在布鲁塞尔、斯特拉斯堡和卢森堡持续存在。
Beyond the EU, Italian is a working language of several international organisations based in Rome, such as the FAO, and it is the everyday language of the Vatican administration, while Latin remains the official language of the Holy See. Italophilia abroad - opera houses, design schools, culinary institutes and Italian cultural institutes - keeps demand for the language steady.
在欧盟之外,意大利语是总部设在罗马的若干国际组织(如联合国粮农组织)的工作语言之一,也是梵蒂冈行政系统的日常语言,而拉丁语仍是圣座的官方语言。海外对意大利文化的喜爱——歌剧院、设计学院、烹饪学校与意大利文化学院——使这门语言的需求保持稳定。
7. Grammar and Phonology Essentials | 语法与语音特点
Italian grammar resembles that of the other major Romance languages. Nouns have grammatical gender, articles agree with them, and the verb system is rich, with three main conjugations ending in -are, -ere and -ire, compound tenses built with avere or essere, and a heavily used subjunctive mood.
意大利语语法与其他主要罗曼语相似:名词有阴阳性之分,冠词与其保持一致,动词变位体系繁杂,主要有以 -are、-ere、-ire 结尾的三类变位,复合时态用 avere 或 essere 构成,虚拟式的使用频率也很高。
A distinctive feature is that plurals are not built with "-s" ake -i. Some nouns are invariable, and a few have irregular plurals such as uomo → uomini.
它的一个显著特点是不以 "-s" 构成名词复数,而是依据词类改变词尾:多数以 -o 结尾的阳性名词复数为 -i,以 -a 结尾的阴性名词复数为 -e,以 -e 结尾的名词复数为 -i。有些名词复数不变,少数还有不规则复数,如 uomo → uomini。
Phonology is comparatively close to Latin, famous for clear, rhythmic vowels and for geminate (double) consonants that can change meaning, as in pala versus palla. The letters c and g vary with the following vowel: c is /k/ before a, o, u but /tʃ/ before e, i, while g behaves in parallel as /ɡ/ or /dʒ/. Digraphs ch and gh keep the hard sound.
其语音系统相对贴近拉丁语,以清晰而有节奏的元音和能够区分词义的长辅音著称,例如 pala 与 palla 意义不同。字母 c 和 g 的发音会随其后元音变化:c 在 a、o、u 前读 /k/,在 e、i 前读 /tʃ/;g 与之平行,读 /ɡ/ 或 /dʒ/;字母组合 ch 和 gh 则保持硬音。
8. Judeo-Italian: A Vanishing Variant | 历史上的犹太意大利语变体
There once existed a family of Judeo-Italian varieties, spoken mainly by Jewish communities in Italy, from Rome and Venice to Livorno and Sicily. They combined local Italian dialects with Hebrew elements and were sometimes written in Hebrew script, which made them a striking example of contact between two language worlds.
历史上曾存在一系列犹太意大利语变体,使用者主要是意大利各地的犹太社区,从罗马、威尼斯到里窝那和西西里。这些变体把当地方言与希伯来语元素结合在一起,有时用希伯来字母书写,是两种语言世界接触的典型例证。
The Second World War dealt a devastating blow to European Jewish communities, and the number of speakers fell sharply. Today these varieties are critically endangered: only a very small number of elderly speakers still command them, and they stand as a clear illustration of how language diversity can be lost.
第二次世界大战给欧洲犹太社区带来毁灭性打击,使用者数量锐减。如今这些语言变体处于极度濒危状态,唯有极少数年长者仍能掌握,它们成为语言多样性如何消失的明证。
9. Early Documents and Literary Development | 早期文献与发展历程
The earliest texts in an Italian vernacular go back to around the tenth century, in legal documents from Lazio and the Monte Cassino area - the so-called Placiti Cassinesi, dated 960-963. Their language is fragmentary and formulaic, and older candidates such as the Veronese Riddle are still debated.
意大利本土俗语最早的文献可追溯到约十世纪,见于拉齐奥和蒙特卡西诺地区的法律文书,即所谓"卡西诺证词",年代为960至963年。这些文本的语言零碎而程式化,而更早的候选文本如《维罗纳谜语》至今仍有争议。
The first widely recognised literary work is the Canticle of the Creatures attributed to St Francis of Assisi. Older textbooks date it to the end of the twelfth century, while modern scholarship usually places it around 1224-1226. In the thirteenth century the Sicilian School flourished at the court of Frederick II, laying the foundations for a literary language.
第一部得到公认的文学作品是归于圣方济各名下的《万物颂》。较早的教材把它定为十二世纪末期,而现代学界通常认为它写于1224至1226年前后。十三世纪时,西西里诗派在腓特烈二世的宫廷兴起,为文学语言的发展奠定了基础。
Then came Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio, whose works truly fixed the literary standard of Italian. Dante's De vulgari eloquentia argued that a prestigious vernacular was needed, and the Divine Comedy showed what Tuscan could do. Together the three Tre Corone turned a regional dialect into a language fit for law, science and literature.
随后但丁、彼特拉克和薄伽丘登场,他们的作品真正确立了意大利语的文学标准。但丁在《论俗语》中主张需要一种具有威望的俗语,而《神曲》则展示了托斯卡纳语的表现力。这"三大桂冠诗人"共同把一方之言变成了适用于法律、科学与文学的语言。
10. Italian in 2025: Learners, Media and Technology | 2025年的意大利语:学习者、媒体与技术
In 2025 Italian is consistently among the ten most studied languages on global language apps, and it remains a popular choice in schools and universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and the United States. In Italy itself, immigration has created a rapidly growing second-language market: Romanian, Arabic, Albanian and Chinese speakers learn Italian as the language of school, work and citizenship.
2025年,意大利语在全球语言学习平台上稳定处于最受欢迎的前十种语言之列,在英国、德国、澳大利亚和美国的中学与大学中仍是热门选项。在意大利国内,移民带来了快速增长的第二语言市场:罗马尼亚语、阿拉伯语、阿尔巴尼亚语和华语使用者把意大利语作为上学、工作和入籍的语言来学习。
Digital life has changed how the language is consumed. Streaming platforms, podcasts and social media expose learners to regional accents that old textbooks smoothed away, while machine translation has made routine reading easy but has not replaced the need to speak, negotiate and write accurately. For linguists, the most discussed issue is whether dialect and regional Italian will survive the shift of young people to global digital spaces.
数字化生活改变了这门语言的使用方式。流媒体、播客和社交媒体让学习者接触到旧教材中被抹平的地方口音;机器翻译让日常阅读变得容易,却并未取代口语交际、谈判与准确写作的需要
