1. Scarcity and Choice |
The fundamental economic problem is scarcity. This means that we have unlimited wants but limited resources to produce goods and services. Because of scarcity, individuals, businesses and governments must make choices.
Every choice involves giving something up. Economics studies how people decide to allocate scarce resources.
2. Needs and Wants |
Needs are the basic things we must have to survive, such as food, water, shelter and clothing. They are essential for life.
Wants are things that we desire but are not necessary for survival. Examples include smartphones, holidays and luxury items. Our wants are unlimited.
3. Goods and Services |
Goods are tangible products that we can touch and use, such as cars, books and apples. Services are intangible actions performed for us, like haircuts, education and banking.
Both goods and services are produced using scarce resources. We consume them to satisfy our wants and needs.
4. Factors of Production |
The resources used to make goods and services are called factors of production. There are four main types: land, labour, capital and enterprise.
Land includes all natural resources such as water, minerals and forests. Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental. Capital refers to man-made tools, machines and buildings used in production. Enterprise is the ability to combine the other factors and take risks in business.
5. Supply and Demand |
Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices. The law of demand states that as price falls, quantity demanded rises.
Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices. According to the law of supply, as price rises, quantity supplied increases.
6. Markets and Prices |
A market is any place or system where buyers and sellers interact to exchange goods, services or resources. It can be physical like a street market or virtual like an online store.
The price mechanism balances supply and demand. When demand is high and supply is low, prices tend to rise. The equilibrium price is where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied.
7. Costs, Revenue and Profit |
Costs are the expenses a business incurs to produce goods or services. They include raw materials, wages and rent. Total cost is the sum of all these expenses.
Revenue is the income a business receives from selling its output. It is calculated by multiplying the price per unit by the quantity sold.
Profit is the surplus when revenue exceeds total costs. If costs are higher than revenue, the business makes a loss.
8. Money and Exchange |
Money is any item that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services. It serves as a medium of exchange, a store of value and a unit of account.
Before money, people used barter – the direct exchange of one good for another. Barter requires a double coincidence of wants, which is inefficient.
9. Opportunity Cost |
Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative foregone when a choice is made. It represents what you sacrifice to get something else.
For example, if you spend your savings on a new bike, the opportunity cost might be the holiday you cannot afford. Every decision has an opportunity cost.
10. Incentives and Economic Systems |
An incentive is something that motivates people to behave in a certain way. Positive incentives (rewards) encourage actions, while negative incentives (penalties) discourage them.
An economic system determines how a society allocates scarce resources. The main types are market economies, command economies and mixed economies.
In a market economy, prices guide decisions. In a command economy, the government makes most choices. Most real-world economies are mixed, combining elements of both.
11. Consumers, Producers and Government |
Consumers are individuals or groups who buy goods and services for personal use. Their spending decisions drive demand in the economy.
Producers are individuals or firms that make and supply goods and services. They combine factors of production to create output.
The government plays a role by providing public goods (such as defence and street lighting) and regulating economic activity. It also collects taxes to pay for services.
12. Specialisation and Trade |
Specialisation occurs when individuals, firms or countries focus on producing a limited range of goods or tasks. It often increases efficiency and output.
Trade is the exchange of goods and services between parties. When nations trade, they can benefit from each other's specialisation, leading to a higher standard of living.
International trade involves exports (goods sold abroad) and imports (goods bought from abroad).
