1. Cells: The Building Blocks of Life | 细胞:生命的基石
All living organisms are made of cells, and in Year 8 you learn to distinguish between plant and animal cells in greater detail. An animal cell typically contains a nucleus that controls the cell's activities, cytoplasm where chemical reactions occur, a cell membrane that controls what enters and leaves, and mitochondria where respiration takes place. Plant cells have all these structures plus a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, a large permanent vacuole filled with cell sap, and chloroplasts that absorb light for photosynthesis. When you draw or label cells under the microscope, always use a sharp pencil and write labels neatly, avoiding crossing lines.
Specialised cells are another key concept. For example, a root hair cell has a long extension to increase surface area for water absorption, while a sperm cell has a streamlined head and a tail to swim towards the egg. Red blood cells lose their nucleus to carry more oxygen, and ciliated epithelial cells have tiny hairs called cilia to move mucus. Understanding how a cell's structure is adapted to its function is a skill that you will use right through to GCSE and beyond.
2. Organ Systems at a Glance |
Cells of the same type group together to form tissues, and different tissues work together to form organs. Several organs that perform a shared function make up an organ system. In Year 8 biology you explore the digestive, respiratory, reproductive and skeletal systems, among others. The stomach, for instance, is an organ made of muscular tissue, glandular tissue (which produces enzymes) and epithelial tissue. It belongs to the digestive system alongside the mouth, oesophagus, liver, pancreas and intestines.
ism. A leaf is an organ made of epidermal tissue, palisade mesophyll and spongy mesophyll; it is part of the shoot system of a plant. This organisational thinking helps you see how large multicellular organisms are arranged, and it is the foundation for understanding physiology in more detail later.
3. The Digestive System and Enzymes |
Your body needs to break down large, insoluble food molecules into smaller, soluble ones that can be absorbed into the blood. This is the job of the digestive system. Mechanical digestion starts in the mouth with your teeth, while chemical digestion involves enzymes. Amylase, found in saliva and the pancreas, breaks down starch into maltose. Proteases in the stomach and small intestine digest proteins into amino acids, and lipases break fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, emulsifies fats to give lipase a bigger surface area to work on – but bile itself is not an enzyme.
Enzymes are biological catalysts made of protein. They have an active site that fits a specific substrate like a lock and key. Factors like temperature and pH affect enzyme activity: human enzymes work best at around 37 °C and often at a specific pH, such as acid pepsin in the stomach. If the temperature becomes too high, the enzyme's active site changes shape and denatures – it can no longer function. Use practical investigations, like testing how quickly amylase digests starch at different temperatures, to really embed these ideas.
4. The Respiratory System and Gas Exchange |
Respiration is not simply “breathing” – it is the chemical process that releases energy from glucose in every living cell. Breathing, or ventilation, brings oxygen into the lungs and removes carbon dioxide. Air travels down the trachea, through the bronchi and bronchioles, and finally reaches tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are adapted for efficient gas exchange: they have very thin walls (one cell thick), a huge surface area, a moist lining and a rich blood supply.
The equation for aerobic respiration is:
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy
or in symbols:C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
When muscles work hard without enough oxygen, they can use anaerobic respiration, which produces lactic acid and much less energy. Build a model or diagram of the thorax showing the ribs, intercostal muscles and diaphragm to see how pressure changes draw air in and out.
Not all microorganisms are harmful, but pathogens – bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists – can cause infectious diseases. Bacteria can multiply rapidly and release toxins; viruses invade host cells and use them to make copies of themselves. Your body has several lines of defence. The skin acts as a physical barrier, stomach acid kills many microbes, and white blood cells can engulf pathogens or produce antibodies that lock onto specific antigens. Vaccination introduces a harmless form of the pathogen, training the immune system to respond quickly if the real infection arrives later.
Hygiene, antiseptics and antibiotics all help reduce the spread of disease, but remember that antibiotics only work against bacteria, not viruses. In Year 8 you might investigate the growth of microorganisms on agar plates or model the spread of a disease using a simulation. Always link the pathogen's method of transmission – airborne, contaminated water, direct contact – to ways we can prevent infection.
6. Photosynthesis and Plant Nutrition |
Plants are producers – they make their own food using a process called photosynthesis. This takes place in the chloroplasts of plant cells, converting carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen using light energy. The word equation is:
carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen
with the balanced symbol equation:6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
The glucose produced can be used immediately for respiration, converted into starch for storage, or used to make cellulose, proteins and oils.
Factors limiting photosynthesis include light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature. A graph of photosynthesis rate against each of these often shows a plateau, because one factor becomes limiting. Remember that plants also need mineral ions from the soil: nitrates for making amino acids and proteins, magnesium for chlorophyll, and phosphates for healthy roots. Being able to describe a practical, such as testing a variegated leaf for starch, will help you secure high marks in assessments.
7. Ecosystems, Food Chains and Webs |
An ecosystem is made up of all the living organisms in a particular area, interacting with each other and their non-living surroundings. Producers, usually plants and algae, occupy the first trophic level. Energy flows from producers to primary consumers (herbivores), then to secondary consumers (carnivores) and sometimes to tertiary consumers. A food chain shows a single path of energy transfer, while a food web shows how multiple chains interconnect, demonstrating that most animals eat more than one type of food.
Build your food web vocabulary: predator, prey, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, decomposer. Decomposers like bacteria and fungi break down dead material, returning nutrients to the soil. You should be able to interpret pyramids of number and biomass, and understand that only a small percentage (roughly 10%) of energy is passed on to the next trophic level – the rest is used for movement, growth or lost as heat. This explains why food chains are usually short.
8. Human Reproduction |
The human reproductive system is designed to produce offspring and ensure the continuation of the species. In males, the testes produce sperm and the hormone testosterone; sperm travel through the sperm ducts and mix with fluids from glands to form semen. In females, the ovaries release an egg each month during the menstrual cycle. The egg travels down the oviduct towards the uterus, where a fertilised egg can implant and develop into a baby.
Fertilisation happens when the nucleus of a sperm fuses with the nucleus of an egg, producing a zygote with the full set of chromosomes. The placenta, anchored to the uterus wall, allows oxygen and nutrients to pass from mother to baby, and removes waste products – but the two blood supplies never mix. The umbilical cord connects the fetus to the placenta. Understanding how substances like alcohol and nicotine can cross the placenta underlines the importance of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy.
9. Variation and Classification |
No two individuals are exactly alike – this is called variation. Some differences, like eye colour or blood type, are entirely due to genetic inheritance; others, such as language spoken or scars, are environmental. Many characteristics, like height and body mass, are influenced by both genes and the environment. Continuous variation (e.g. height) can take any value within a range, while discontinuous variation (e.g. blood group) falls into distinct categories.
Scientists classify organisms into groups based on similarities and evolutionary relationships. The five-kingdom system – animals, plants, fungi, prokaryotes and protists – is often introduced in Year 8. You should know the hierarchical system: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. The binomial naming system uses the Genus and Species (e.g. Homo sapiens). Classification helps us identify species, trace evolutionary links and understand biodiversity.
10. Bridging to GCSE: Essential Skills | 迈向 GCSE:必备技能
Moving from Year 8 to Year 9 is a big step, but the skills you have been developing are exactly what you need for GCSE biology. Graph skills are essential: you must be able to plot points accurately, draw a line or bar chart with labelled axes (including units), and describe trends, fluctuations and anomalies. When writing a conclusion, refer directly to the data and use scientific reasoning to explain the pattern you see.
Other transferable skills include using key vocabulary precisely, evaluating risks in a practical, and designing valid investigations with independent, dependent and control variables. Practise writing in full sentences, using the AQA command words: "describe", "explain", "compare", "evaluate" and "suggest". For example, "describe" asks you to recall facts, whereas "explain" requires you to say why or how something happens. A summer well spent is one where you revisit your Year 8 notes, test yourself with flashcards, and calmly preview a GCSE topic such as cell division or enzymes in more depth.
