1. Particle Theory and States of Matter | 粒子理论与物质状态
Particle theory explains that all matter is made of tiny particles in constant motion. The arrangement and movement of these particles determine whether a substance is a solid, a liquid or a gas.
粒子理论解释所有物质都由不断运动的微小粒子构成。粒子的排列与运动方式决定了物质是固体、液体还是气体。
In solids, particles are held tightly in a regular pattern and can only vibrate about fixed positions. This gives solids a definite shape and volume, and they cannot be compressed.
在固体中,粒子被紧紧地固定在规则的图案里,只能在固定的位置振动。这让固体具有确定的形状和体积,且不能被压缩。
In liquids, particles are still close together but are able to slide past each other. Liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of their container and can flow.
在液体中,粒子仍然彼此靠近,但能够互相滑动。液体有固定的体积,但会呈现容器的形状,并且可以流动。
In gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions. Gases have no fixed shape or volume, can be compressed easily and expand to fill any container.
在气体中,粒子相距很远并快速地向各个方向运动。气体没有固定的形状或体积,容易被压缩,并会膨胀充满任何容器。
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to one of low concentration. It occurs most rapidly in gases because of the large spaces between particles.
扩散是粒子从高浓度区域向低浓度区域的净运动。由于气体粒子间的间隔很大,扩散在气体中进行得最快。
2. Atoms, Elements and the Periodic Table | 原子、元素与元素周期表
An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist. Atoms contain a central nucleus made of protons (positive charge) and neutrons (no charge), surrounded by electrons (negative charge) orbiting in shells.
原子是元素能够存在的最小部分。原子含有一个由质子(带正电)和中子(不带电)组成的中心原子核,核外是分层排布的电子(带负电)。
All atoms of a given element have the same number of protons, called the atomic number. The Periodic Table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number.
给定元素的所有原子都具有相同数量的质子,这个数目称为原子序数。元素周期表按照原子序数递增的顺序排列元素。
Elements in the same group (vertical column) have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons in their outermost shell. For example, Group 1 are the alkali metals, Group 7 are the halogens, and Group 0 are the noble gases.
同一族(纵列)的元素具有相似的化学性质,因为它们的最外层电子数相同。例如,第1族是碱金属,第7族是卤素,第0族是稀有气体。
Metals are found on the left and centre of the Periodic Table, while non‑metals are located on the right. The dividing line often starts below boron.
金属位于周期表的左侧和中部,而非金属位于右侧。分界线通常从硼的下方开始。
3. Compounds and Chemical Formulae | 化合物与化学式
A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together. The properties of a compound are usually very different from those of its constituent elements.
化合物是由两种或多种不同元素通过化学键结合而成的物质。化合物的性质通常与其组成元素的性质截然不同。
Chemical formulae use symbols and subscript numbers to show the types of atoms present and their ratios. For example, H₂O shows water has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom per molecule.
化学式使用元素符号和下标数字来表示存在的原子种类及其比例。例如,H₂O 表示每个水分子含有两个氢原子和一个氧原子。
Compounds can only be separated into simpler substances by chemical reactions, not by physical methods such as filtration or evaporation. In contrast, mixtures can be separated physically.
化合物只能通过化学反应分解为更简单的物质,而不能通过过滤或蒸发等物理方法分离。相反,混合物可以通过物理方法分离。
Common compounds you should know include: carbon dioxide (CO₂), sodium chloride (NaCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and magnesium oxide (MgO).
你应该熟悉的常见化合物包括:二氧化碳 (CO₂)、氯化钠 (NaCl)、硫酸 (H₂SO₄)、碳酸钙 (CaCO₃) 和氧化镁 (MgO)。
4. Mixtures and Separation Techniques | 混合物与分离技术
A mixture consists of two or more substances that are not chemically joined. Each component retains its own properties, and mixtures can be separated using physical techniques.
混合物由两种或多种未通过化学键结合的物质组成。各组分保留自身的性质,混合物可以使用物理技术进行分离。
Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid. For example, sand can be separated from water using filter paper and a funnel.
过滤用于分离不溶性固体和液体。例如,可以用滤纸和漏斗从水中分离出沙子。
Evaporation and crystallisation can recover a dissolved solid from a solution. When the solvent evaporates slowly, crystals of the solute can form.
蒸发和结晶可以从溶液中回收溶解的固体。当溶剂缓慢蒸发时,可以形成溶质的晶体。
Simple distillation separates a liquid from a solution by boiling and condensing it, while fractional distillation can separate two or more liquids with different boiling points.
简单蒸馏通过沸腾和冷凝将液体从溶液中分离出来,而分馏则可以分离两种或多种沸点不同的液体。
Chromatography separates dissolved substances, such as different pigments in an ink, based on how they distribute themselves between a stationary phase and a mobile phase.
色谱法根据溶解的物质在固定相和流动相之间的分配差异来分离它们,例如墨水中的不同色素。
5. Physical and Chemical Changes | 物理变化与化学变化
In a physical change, no new substances are made. Changes of state, such as melting or boiling, are physical changes because the particles themselves do not change—only their arrangement or energy changes.
物理变化中没有新物质生成。状态变化如熔化或沸腾是物理变化,因为粒子本身没有改变——仅仅是它们的排列或能量发生了变化。
Chemical changes, or chemical reactions, produce one or more new substances. Evidence of a chemical reaction includes a colour change, a gas being given off, a precipitate forming, or a significant temperature change.
化学变化即化学反应,会产生一种或多种新物质。化学反应的证据包括颜色变化、有气体放出、生成沉淀或明显的温度变化。
Physical changes are usually relatively easy to reverse, whereas chemical changes are often difficult or impossible to reverse by simple means. For example, melting ice is reversible, but baking a cake is not.
物理变化通常比较容易逆转,而化学变化往往很难或不可能通过简单手段逆转。例如,冰融化是可逆的,但烤蛋糕则不是。
