1. Energy Essentials: From Year 7 to Year 8 | 能量基础:从7年级到8年级的过渡
In Year 7 you discovered that energy comes in different stores, such as kinetic, thermal, chemical, gravitational potential, elastic potential, light, sound and electrical energy. The most important rule is the conservation of energy: energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred from one store to another or from one object to another.
You also used simple energy transfer diagrams and Sankey diagrams to show how energy moves into, out of and within a system. For instance, when a light bulb is switched on, electrical energy is transferred into light and thermal energy; the arrow widths in a Sankey diagram represent the amount of energy in each transfer.
In Year 8, you will take this further by quantifying how quickly energy is transferred—this is called power—and by examining how much of the input energy is usefully converted, known as efficiency. These ideas underpin topics like energy costs and comparing appliances.
2. Understanding Power and Efficiency |
Power is defined as the rate at which energy is transferred or the rate at which work is done. The formula for power is:
P = E ÷ t
J), and t is time in seconds (s). One watt is equal to one joule per second (1 W = 1 J/s).
0 W. Knowing the power rating of appliances helps us compare how much energy they use each second.
Efficiency measures how good a device is at converting input energy into useful output energy. It can be calculated as:
Efficiency = Useful output energy ÷ Total input energy
Efficiency has no unit and is often expressed as a percentage. Because some energy is always transferred to thermal energy by friction or resistance, efficiency is always less than 1 (or 100%). Sankey diagrams drawn to scale can help you visualise useful and wasted energy transfers.
3. Electric Circuits: Current and Voltage |
You already know the basic circuit symbols for cells, batteries, switches, bulbs, buzzers, motors, ammeters and voltmeters. Year 8 will extend this by focusing on the roles of current and voltage, often called potential difference (p.d.).
Electric current is the flow of electric charge around a circuit. Current is measured in amperes (A) using an ammeter connected in series. In a metal, the moving charges are free electrons. The greater the current, the more charge passes a point each second.
Voltage (potential difference) is the 'push' that drives the current around a circuit. It tells you how much energy is transferred to each unit of charge. Voltage is measured in volts (V) using a voltmeter connected in parallel across a component. A cell or battery provides the voltage needed to make charges move.
For instance, a 1.5 V cell supplies 1.5 J of energy to each coulomb of charge. Without a voltage source, no current can flow. Understanding both current and voltage will allow you to analyse series and parallel circuits in much greater depth.
4. Series and Parallel Circuits |
There are two main ways to connect components. The key differences between series and parallel circuits are summarised in the table below.
| Feature | Series Circuit | Parallel Circuit |
|---|---|---|
| Path for current | Only one loop | More than one loop (branches) |
| Current | Same at all points | Total current = sum of branch currents |
| Voltage | Shared across components; total p.d. = sum of p.d.s | Same across each branch |
| If one component breaks | Whole circuit stops | Others continue to work in their own loops |
From the table you can see that in a series circuit the current is the same everywhere, while the total voltage from the battery is divided between the components. In a parallel circuit each branch receives the full battery voltage, and the current from the battery equals the sum of the currents in the separate branches.
Year 8 also introduces the idea of resistance, measured in ohms (Ω). Resistance tells us how difficult it is for current to flow. For a given component, R = V ÷ I. Adding more bulbs in series increases the total resistance and reduces the current; adding more bulbs in parallel provides extra paths and decreases the overall resistance, so the total current increases.
5. Forces and Motion: Speed and Acceleration |
In Year 7 you learned that forces can change the shape, speed or direction of an object. Year 8 now asks you to describe motion more precisely using the idea of speed and distance–time graphs.
Average speed is a measure of how far an object travels in a given time. The formula is:
speed = distance ÷ time
or
或
v = d ÷ t
ime in seconds (s). If a cyclist travels 150 m in 30 s, her speed is 150 m ÷ 30 s = 5 m/s.
Distance–time graphs are extremely useful. A straight, sloping line represents constant speed; a horizontal line means the object is stationary. The steeper the slope, the greater the speed. You can also calculate speed from the gradient of a distance–time graph.
When the resultant force on an object is not zero, its speed changes. A larger resultant force causes a faster change in speed. You will use these ideas later to understand acceleration more formally, but for now focusing on speed and graph skills builds a strong foundation.
6. Gravity, Weight and Mass |
Mass and weight are often confused in everyday language, but in physics they are very different. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. It is a scalar quantity, measured in kilograms (kg) using a balance, and it does not change with location.
Weight is the force of gravity acting on an object. It is a vector quantity, measured in newtons (N) using a spring balance or force meter. Weight depends on the strength of the gravitational field, so your weight would be less on the Moon than on Earth, even though your mass stays the same.
The relationship between weight and mass is given by:
W = m × g
9.8 N/kg, which is often rounded to 10 N/kg in simple calculations. This means a 1 kg mass experiences a weight of about 10 N. The direction of weight is always towards the centre of the Earth (or the centre of the planet you are on).
7. The Particle Model and States of Matter |
The particle model is a simple way to explain the behaviour of solids, liquids and gases. All substances are made up of tiny particles that are constantly moving. The key difference between the three states of matter lies in how these particles are arranged and how much energy they have.
In solids, particles are held closely together in a regular pattern and can only vibrate about fixed positions. This gives solids a definite shape and volume. In liquids, particles are still close together but can slide past one another, so liquids have a definite volume but take the shape of their container. In gases, particles are far apart and move randomly at high speeds, so gases fill the whole container and have no fixed shape or volume.
The names of changes of state must be learned: melting (solid to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), boiling and evaporation (liquid to gas), condensation (gas to liquid), sublimation (solid to gas) and deposition (gas to solid). During a change of state, the temperature stays constant even though energy is being added or removed, because the energy goes into breaking or forming bonds between particles rather than raising the temperature.
8. Changes of State and Density |
Density describes how tightly packed the particles are in a material. It is defined as mass per unit volume and can be calculated with the formula:
ρ = m ÷ V
where ρ (Greek letter '
