Every section below states the key idea in English first, then repeats the same idea in Chinese, so you can revise one concept in either language. Use the numbered sections to check your understanding, and use the formulas, tables and lists as quick reference points before a test, a design deadline or a workshop session.

1. Introduction to Engineering |

Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical knowledge to design, create and improve products, systems and structures that solve real problems and meet human needs. It is a practical and creative discipline: an idea only counts as an engineering solution when it actually works in the real world, within real limits of time, cost and safety.

Engineers work across many fields, including mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering and manufacturing. The same design thinking is used in all of them, but the materials, forces and standards involved change from field to field.

The core mindset of an engineer includes creativity, critical thinking and a systematic approach to troubleshooting. Good engineers ask "why did it fail?" rather than "who is to blame?", and they test assumptions instead of trusting them. They also record their thinking, because an undocumented solution cannot be checked, improved or repeated by other people.

When developing solutions, engineers must consider several competing factors at the same time: cost, safety, aesthetics and environmental impact. These are called design constraints. Improving one constraint often makes another worse - a lighter product may be more expensive, and a cheaper material may last a shorter time - so engineering is usually a process of balancing trade-offs rather than finding a perfect answer.

2. The Engineering Design Process |

The engineering design process is a step-by-step method used to solve problems iteratively. It usually begins with identifying a need or a problem, and then moves through research, idea generation, prototype development, testing and refinement. The word iteratively means the process loops: test results send you back to an earlier stage, and the design becomes better each time round.

The key stages of the process are listed below. In a written answer, always name the stage you are describing, and say what you learn from it rather than simply listing the steps.

A specification is the list of requirements a solution must meet. Functional requirements describe what the product must do, while constraints describe the limits it must work within, such as maximum mass, budget, available materials, size, safety rules and the intended user. A design that ignores the specification may look impressive but still fail the brief.

A prototype is an early version of the design, built to be tested rather than to be sold. Prototypes may be made from card, foam, 3D printed parts or a simple circuit before the final product is manufactured. Testing produces data, data reveals weaknesses, and the weaknesses drive the next iteration of the design.

3. Materials and Their Properties |

Engineering materials are usually grouped into families: metals, polymers, ceramics, woods, composites and smart materials. Each family has a typical combination of properties, and choosing a material means matching those properties to the job the product must do.

The most important properties you need to know are strength, hardness, toughness, ductility, elasticity, density, thermal and electrical conductivity, and resistance to corrosion. Strength is the ability to withstand force without breaking, hardness is resistance to scratching and wear, and toughness is the ability to absorb impact without cracking. Ductility allows a material to be drawn or bent permanently without fracture.

Good strength-to-weight, easy to work | 强度重量比好、易加工 Furniture, moulds, models | 家具、模具、模型

Two calculations appear again and again in materials work. Density compares mass with volume, and stress compares the load carried with the cross-sectional area that carries it.

ρ = m ÷ V  σ = F ÷ A

In these equations, ρ is density in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³), m is mass in kilograms, V is volume in cubic metres, σ is stress in newtons per square millimetre or pascals, F is force in newtons and A is cross-sectional area in square millimetres or square metres. Always write the units next to your answer, because a number without units is not an engineering result.

4. Forces, Structures and Mechanics |

A force is a push or a pull that can change the motion, shape or size of an object. Force is a vector quantity, which means it has both a size and a direction, and it is measured in newtons (N). Arrows are used to show forces on a diagram: the length of the arrow represents the size, and the head shows the direction.

When the forces acting on an object cancel out, the object is in equilibrium and the resultant force is zero. If the forces do not cancel, the resultant is found by adding them as vectors, taking direction into account. A turning effect is called a moment, and it depends on both the size of the force and how far it acts from the pivot.

M = F × d  Σ M clockwise = Σ M anticlockwise

Here M is the moment in newton metres (N m), F is the force in newtons and d is the perpendicular distance from the pivot in metres. The second statement is the principle of moments: for a balanced object, the total clockwise moment equals the total anticlockwise moment.

Structures such as bridges, towers and frames must resist forces without collapsing. Triangles are used because a triangle cannot change shape without one of its sides changing length, which makes triangulation the cheapest way to stiffen a frame. Arches transfer load outwards and downwards into their supports, and beams resist bending, which puts the top of the beam in compression and the bottom in tension.

Stress and strain describe how a material behaves under load. Strain is the fractional change in length and has no units, and the ratio of stress to strain in the elastic region is called the Young modulus. If a material is loaded beyond its elastic limit it deforms permanently, and if it is loaded cyclically it can fail by fatigue at stresses well below its breaking stress.

5. Energy, Mechanisms and Motion |

Energy is the ability to do work, and it is measured in joules (J). Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one store to another, which is the principle of conservation of energy. In any real machine, some energy is always transferred to the surroundings by friction and sound, so the useful output is always less than the total input.

W = F × d  P = W ÷ t  Efficiency = (useful output ÷ total input) × 100%

Work done W is measured in joules, force F in newtons, distance d in metres, power P in watts and time t in seconds. Efficiency is usually written as a percentage, and it can never be greater than 100% for a real machine.

Mechanisms change the size, direction or type of motion. Levers use a pivot to gain a mechanical advantage, gears transfer rotation between shafts, belts and chains transmit power over a distance, cams convert rotation into reciprocating motion, and linkages change the direction and path of movement. A mechanism that multiplies force must move a greater distance, so nothing is gained for free.

MA = output force ÷ input force Gear ratio = teeth on driven gear ÷ teeth on driver gear

Mechanical advantage (MA) has no units because it is a ratio. A gear ratio greater than 1 gives more torque but lower output speed; a ratio less than 1 gives higher speed but less torque. This inverse relationship between force and speed is the key idea behind almost every transmission system.

6. Electronics and Control |

An electric current is a flow of charge, measured in amperes (A). Current only flows in a complete circuit, and it is driven by a potential difference (voltage) measured in volts (V). Resistance, measured in ohms (Ω), opposes the current and turns electrical energy into heat.

I = Q ÷ t  V = I × R  P = V × I

peres, Q is charge in coulombs, t is time in seconds, V is voltage in volts, R is resistance in ohms and P is power in watts. Ohm' r at constant temperature; a lamp filament does not obey it, because its resistance rises as it heats up.

In a series circuit the current is the same everywhere and the supply voltage is shared between components, so the total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances. In a parallel circuit the voltage is the same across each branch and the current splits between them, so the total resistance is lower than the smallest single resistance.

Series: Rtotal = R₁ + R₂   Parallel: 1 ÷ Rtotal = 1 ÷ R₁ + 1 ÷ R₂

Electronic systems are usually described as input, process and output. Inputs include switches, light-dependent resistors, thermistors and push buttons; the process stage is the control circuit, often a microcontroller such as a micro:bit or Arduino; outputs include LEDs, buzzers, motors and solenoids. Logic gates - AND, OR and NOT - make decisions from two or more input states, and truth tables record every possible combination of inputs and outputs.
