📚 Psychology: Understanding Mind and Behaviour |

Psychology is far more than the popular image of "reading minds". It is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour, and it asks why people think, feel and act the way they do. For A-Level students, psychology combines biological science, social science and data analysis, which is exactly what makes it both fascinating and demanding.

The subject covers cognition, emotion, motivation, development, personality and social relationships. Through systematic research and empirical evidence, it helps us understand the deeper causes behind behaviour rather than simply describing what we can see.

1. What Psychology Actually Studies |

Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. The word "scientific" matters: psychologists rely on systematic observation, measurement and controlled investigation rather than intuition, tradition or common sense. This is what separates psychology from pseudo-sciences such as astrology.

Classical psychology pursues four goals: to describe behaviour, to explain why it occurs, to predict when it will occur again, and to change or control it in beneficial ways. Because behaviour is shaped by biological, cognitive, social and developmental factors, psychology sits at the intersection of the natural and social sciences.

At A-Level, the subject is examined through structured papers that test knowledge (AO1), application (AO2) and evaluation (AO3). Whatever the specification - AQA, OCR, Edexcel or Cambridge 9990 - the same core skills appear: knowing a study in detail, applying it to a novel scenario, and judging its strengths and limitations.

2. The Main Branches of Psychology |

Psychology is not one single field but a family of overlapping branches. Each branch asks different questions, uses different methods and often works in a different setting.

Branches are not isolated silos. A researcher studying depression may borrow genetic evidence from biological psychology, cognitive biases from cognitive psychology, and stigma from social psychology. Modern psychology is increasingly interdisciplinary.

3. Core Perspectives or Approaches |

Alongside branches, psychology is organised by perspectives - broad ways of explaining behaviour. A-Level answers score highly when a student can name the perspective behind a claim and evaluate it.

Each perspective is a lens, not the whole truth. Strong evaluation compares perspectives, for example contrasting behaviourism's scientific rigour with its neglect of cognition, or the biological approach's precision with its risk of biological determinism.

4. Research Methods: The Toolkit |

Psychologists use a wide range of methods, including experiments, questionnaires, observations, interviews and clinical case studies. Each tool is chosen because it fits the research question, and each carries its own strengths and weaknesses.

Data collected through these methods is analysed statistically so that conclusions rest on evidence rather than impression. Researchers normally state a hypothesis in advance, test it against data, and use inferential statistics to judge whether results are likely to be due to chance.

Not generalisable, hard to replicate

5. Experiments and Variables |

An experiment manipulates an independent variable (IV) and measures its effect on a dependent variable (DV) while controlling extraneous variables. If participants are randomly allocated to conditions and everything else is standardised, a cause-and-effect conclusion becomes defensible.

Experiments come in several forms. Laboratory experiments offer the greatest control; field experiments take place in a natural setting; natural experiments exploit a change the researcher did not create; quasi-experiments compare pre-existing groups such as boys and girls, so random allocation is impossible.

Key threats to validity include confounding variables (which vary systematically with the IV), demand characteristics (participants guessing the aim), investigator effects (researcher expectations influencing results), order effects and participant variables. Counterbalancing, standardised instructions, single-blind and double-blind designs are common controls.

Experimental designs also matter: independent groups avoid order effects but need more participants; repeated measures control individual differences but risk fatigue; matched pairs is a compromise but matching is never perfect.

6. Non-Experimental Methods |

Not everything can be manipulated ethically: you cannot randomly assign children to abusive parenting. Non-experimental methods therefore play a central role in psychology.

indicates a strong relationship; a coefficient near 0 indicates little or no relationship.

−1 ≤ r ≤ +1

The golden rule is that correlation does not prove causation. There may be a third variable: ice-cream sales correlate with drowning rates because both rise in hot weather. Only experiments can establish cause and effect.

7. Sampling and Ethics |

Because researchers rarely test a whole population, they take a sample and try to make it representative. The main techniques are random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified sampling, opportunity sampling and volunteer sampling.

Random sampling gives every member an equal chance and reduces bias, but can be impractical. Opportunity sampling is quick and convenient but unrepresentative. Volunteer sampling attracts certain personalities, producing volunteer bias. Stratified sampling mirrors the target population's structure but is time-consuming.

Ethical guidelines protect both participants and the credibility of the discipline. In the UK, research follows BPS (British Psychological Society) principles; the same core rules appear in every specification.

8. Data Analysis and Statistics |

After data is collected, researchers describe it and then test it. Descriptive statistics summarise the data: measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and measures of dispersion (range and standard deviation).

Standard deviation shows how far scores spread around the mean. A small value means scores cluster tightly; a large value means they are widely scattered.

z = (x − μ) ÷ σ

Data can be presented in tables, bar charts, histograms, line graphs and scattergrams. Histograms suit continuous data, bar charts suit categories, and scattergrams display correlations.

tics check whether a result is statistically significant. Psychologists normally use the 5% significance level, written p ≤ 0.05, meaning there is less than a 5% probability the result occurred by chance alone.

χ² = Σ (O − E)² ÷ E

Two errors must be distinguished. A Type I error is a false positive: the null hypothesis is rejected when it is actually true. A Type II error is a false negative: the null hypothesis is retained when it is actually false. The stricter the significance level, the lower the risk of a Type I error.

Psychology is an applied discipline as much as a theoretical one, and its findings are used in hospitals, schools, workplaces and public policy.
