1. Cells and Microscopy |
Cells are the basic structural and functional units of all living organisms. Animal cells typically contain a nucleus that controls cellular activities, cytoplasm where chemical reactions occur, a cell membrane that selectively controls what enters and leaves, and mitochondria that release energy through respiration. Plant cells have these same components but also possess a rigid cell wall for support, chloroplasts for photosynthesis, and a large permanent vacuole that maintains turgor pressure.
Microscopes enable scientists to magnify cells and subcellular structures. The total magnification is calculated by multiplying the magnification of the eyepiece lens by that of the objective lens. When preparing a specimen on a slide, adding a drop of stain helps to highlight specific parts such as the nucleus or cell wall.
Total Magnification = Eyepiece Magnification × Objective Magnification
2. The Digestive System |
The human digestive system breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble substances that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Mechanical digestion occurs when teeth crush and tear food, while chemical digestion relies on enzymes to speed up the breakdown of nutrients. Amylase in saliva and the small intestine breaks down starch into maltose; proteases in the stomach and small intestine digest proteins into amino acids; lipase from the pancreas breaks fats into glycerol and fatty acids, aided by bile from the liver which emulsifies fats.
The food travels from the mouth down the oesophagus to the stomach, where acid and enzymes begin protein breakdown. The partially digested food then moves into the small intestine, where most absorption occurs across villi – tiny finger-like projections that increase surface area. Undigested material passes to the large intestine, where water is absorbed, and finally waste is egested.
3. Breathing and Gas Exchange |
Breathing refers to the physical movement of air into and out of the lungs, while respiration is the chemical release of energy inside cells. Inhalation occurs when the diaphragm contracts and flattens and the intercostal muscles lift the rib cage upwards and outwards, lowering pressure and drawing air in. Exhalation is largely passive, with the diaphragm relaxing and the rib cage falling.
Gas exchange takes place in the alveoli, tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries. Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled. The alveoli have very thin walls, a large surface area, and a rich blood supply, making this process highly efficient.
Respiration: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy)
4. The Circulatory System |
The human circulatory system is a double system: the right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen, while the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. The heart has four chambers – two atria that receive blood and two ventricles that pump blood out. Valves prevent backflow, ensuring blood flows in one direction.
Three main blood vessels are highways of this system. Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure and have thick, muscular walls. Veins return blood to the heart at lower pressure and contain valves to stop backflow. Capillaries are microscopic, one-cell-thick vessels where exchange of gases, nutrients, and wastes occurs with cells.
Blood is composed of plasma, red blood cells that carry oxygen using haemoglobin, white blood cells that defend against pathogens, and platelets that help form clots. Each component plays a vital role in maintaining health.
5. Photosynthesis and Plant Transport |
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. Chlorophyll in chloroplasts absorbs sunlight. The glucose produced is either used immediately for respiration, converted into starch for storage, or turned into cellulose for cell wall construction.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ (light needed)
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂(需要光)
The rate of photosynthesis is affected by light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, and temperature. A limitation in any one of these factors will slow the rate, a principle known as a limiting factor. Starch testing with iodine solution is a common way to confirm that photosynthesis has occurred.
Plants have transport tissues: xylem vessels carry water and dissolved minerals from the roots up to the leaves, driven by transpiration pull. Phloem tubes transport dissolved sugars and amino acids from photosynthetic regions to other parts of the plant in a process called translocation.
6. Food Chains and Ecosystems |
Ecosystems contain organisms interacting with each other and their physical environment. A food chain shows the transfer of energy from one organism to the next. Producers (usually green plants) start the chain by converting solar energy into chemical energy. Consumers are organisms that eat other organisms; primary consumers eat plants, secondary consumers eat primary consumers, and so on. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down dead organic matter, recycling nutrients.
Energy is lost at each trophic level, mainly as heat from respiration and as undigested material. This limits the length of food chains. Within a food web, organisms can be part of multiple chains, and changes in one population can have cascading effects. Prey-predator cycles often show regular fluctuations.
7. Reproduction and Inheritance |
Reproduction can be sexual, involving the fusion of male and female gametes to produce genetically varied offspring, or asexual, where a single parent produces genetically identical offspring. In flowering plants, pollen (male gamete) is transferred to the stigma during pollination; after fertilisation, the ovary develops into a fruit containing seeds.
Humans inherit characteristics via genes located on chromosomes inside the nucleus of every cell. The nucleus of a human body cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes. An individual's features are determined by alleles, different versions of the same gene. A dominant allele will be expressed if present; a recessive allele is only expressed in the absence of a dominant allele. A Punnett square can predict the probability of offspring inheriting a particular combination of alleles.
8. Microbes and the Immune System |
Microorganisms (microbes) include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protists. Many are harmless or beneficial, for example in digestion or decomposition, but some are pathogens that cause diseases. Bacteria reproduce rapidly under suitable conditions and can damage cells through toxins. Viruses invade host cells and use them to replicate, destroying the cell in the process.
The human body has several lines of defence against pathogens. Physical barriers include skin and mucus. If pathogens enter, white blood cells mount an immune response: some engulf and digest microbes (phagocytosis), while others produce specific antibodies that neutralise pathogens or mark them for destruction. Memory cells formed during an initial infection allow a faster and stronger response upon re-exposure.
Vaccination introduces a harmless form of the pathogen to stimulate the immune system to produce memory cells and antibodies without causing illness. This artificial active immunity protects individuals and, when widely applied, provides herd immunity, reducing the spread of disease.
