Use this quick reference to reinforce your understanding and prepare for assessments.
1. Atomic Structure |
All matter is made of atoms, which consist of a central nucleus surrounded by electrons. The nucleus contains protons and neutrons.
Protons have a relative mass of 1 and a charge of +1. Neutrons have a mass of 1 and no charge. Electrons have a negligible mass (about 1/1836 of a proton) and a charge of −1.
Atoms are electrically neutral because the number of protons equals the number of electrons.
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in an atom, which determines the element. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons and neutrons.
Electrons are arranged in shells (energy levels) around the nucleus. The first shell holds up to 2 electrons, the second up to 8, and for the first 20 elements the third shell also holds up to 8 electrons.
2. Elements, Compounds and Mixtures |
An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. Examples include oxygen (O₂), iron (Fe) and gold (Au).
A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together. Compounds have a fixed composition and can be represented by a chemical formula, e.g. H₂O, CO₂.
A mixture consists of two or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically combined. Mixtures can be separated by physical methods such as filtration, distillation or chromatography.
