This handbook brings together the essential formulas and key principles you will meet in Year 8 Edexcel Physics. Use it for quick revision, homework support and test preparation. Each section explains what the formula means, when to use it, and links the mathematical relationship to the physical world.

1. Speed and Distance–Time Graphs |

Speed tells you how quickly an object covers distance. The formula is:

speed = distance ÷ time

or in symbols v = d / t rearrange the equation: distance = speed × time, and time = distance ÷ speed.

On a distance–time graph, a straight sloping line represents constant speed. The gradient of the line equals the speed. A horizontal line means the object is stationary.

2. Acceleration | 加速度

Acceleration describes how quickly velocity changes. It is not just 'speeding up'—it can also be slowing down (deceleration) or a change in direction.

acceleration = change in velocity ÷ time taken

In symbols: a = (v − u) / t, where v is final velocity, u is initial velocity and t is time. The unit is metre per second squared (m/s²).

A positive value means the object is speeding up in the positive direction; a negative value (deceleration) means it is slowing down.

3. Newton’s Laws of Motion |

Newton’s three laws are the foundation of force and motion.

First Law (Law of Inertia): An object remains at rest or moves in a straight line at constant speed unless acted on by an unbalanced force.

Second Law: The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass. The famous equation is:

F = m × a

Force is measured in newtons (N), mass in kilograms (kg) and acceleration in m/s². For a given force, a larger mass gives a smaller acceleration.

Third Law: For every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force. Forces always come in pairs acting on different objects.

4. Weight and Gravity |

Weight is the force of gravity acting on an object’s mass. It is not the same as mass, which is a measure of the amount of matter.

weight = mass × gravitational field strength

In symbols: W = m × g. Near the Earth’s surface, g is approximately 9.8 N/kg (often rounded to 10 N/kg for rough estimates). Weight is measured in newtons.

The mass of an object never changes with location, but its weight can change if g is different, such as on the Moon.

5. Density | 密度

Density links the mass of a substance to the volume it occupies. It tells you how tightly packed the particles are.

density = mass ÷ volume

In symbols: ρ = m / V and grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³). Remember that 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³;.

If an object has a density less than that of the fluid it is placed in, it will float; if its density is greater, it will sink.

6. Pressure and Moments |

Pressure measures how concentrated a force is over an area. A small area gives a large pressure for the same force.

pressure = force ÷ area

In symbols: P = F / A N/m². In liquids and gases, pressure increases with depth and acts in all directions.

The moment of a force measures its turning effect. It depends on the size of the force and how far it is applied from the pivot.

moment = force × perpendicular distance from pivot

The principle of moments: for an object to be balanced, the sum of clockwise moments must equal the sum of anticlockwise moments.

7. Work, Energy and Power |

Work is done when a force moves an object through a distance. Energy is transferred during this process.

work done = force × distance moved in the direction of the force

In symbols: W = F × d. Work is measured in joules (J). One joule is the work done when a force of 1 N moves an object 1 m.

Energy can be stored in different ways. Two common examples for Year 8 are kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy.

kinetic energy (KE) = ½; × mass × speed²

gravitational potential energy (GPE) = mass × g × height

Power is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred.

power = work done ÷ time taken

or P = W / t (or P = E / t). The unit is watt (W); 1 W = 1 J/s.

或写作 P = W / t(也可用 P = E / t)。

Efficiency shows how much of the input energy is converted to useful output. It is usually expressed as a percentage:

efficiency = (useful output energy ÷ total input energy) × 100%

No device can be 100% efficient because some energy is always transferred to the thermal store of the surroundings.

8. Wave Properties |

Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. The key quantities for any wave are frequency, wavelength and wave speed.

wave speed = frequency × wavelength

In symbols: v = f × λ. Frequency (f) is measured in hertz (Hz), wavelength (λ) in metres (m) and wave speed (v) in m/s.

You can identify a wave type by its direction of vibration. In transverse waves (e.g. light, water waves) vibrations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. In longitudinal waves (e.g. sound), vibrations are parallel.

The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, measured from the normal.

9. Electricity | 电学

An electric current is a flow of charge. In metals, this is a flow of electrons. The size of the current depends on the potential difference (voltage) and the resistance of the circuit.

potential difference = current × resistance

In symbols: V = I × R. Voltage (V) is measured in volts (V), current (I) in amperes (A) and resistance (R) in ohms (Ω).

There is also a relationship between charge, current and time:

charge = current × time

or Q = I × t. Charge is measured in coulombs (C).

In series circuits, the current is the same everywhere, but the total resistance is the sum of individual resistances. In parallel circuits, the current splits, and the total resistance is less than the smallest individual resistance.

10. Hooke’s Law and Elasticity |

When a spring is stretched, the extension is directly proportional to the applied force, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded.

force = spring constant × extension

In symbols: F = k × x. Here k is the spring constant (N/m), which tells you how stiff the spring is, and x is the extension (m).

The straight-line graph of force against extension proves direct proportionality. Once the force is removed, an elastic object returns to its original length. If stretched beyond its elastic limit, the material deforms plastically and does not return to its original shape.

11. Energy Transfers and Conservation |

The law of conservation of energy states that energy can never be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred from one store to another or from one form to another.

There are eight main energy stores you should know: kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, thermal, chemical, magnetic, electrostatic and nuclear. Energy can be transferred by four pathways: mechanically (by a force doing work), electrically (by an electric current), by heating and by radiation (light and sound).

In any closed system, the total energy before a change equals the total energy after. For example, when a ball is dropped, gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy. When it hits the ground, some kinetic energy is transferred to thermal energy of the surroundings.

12. Gas Pressure and the Particle Model |

The behaviour of solids, liquids and gases is explained by the particle model. In a gas, particles are in constant random motion and collide with the walls of the container, producing pressure.

If the temperature of a gas in a sealed container increases, the particles move faster and hit the walls harder and more often, so the pressure increases. If the volume of the container is decreased (with constant temperature), the particles hit the walls more frequently, also increasing pressure.

le’s Law, more formally studied at a higher level but introduced here conceptually).
