📚 Spanish Language: Origins, Global Status and Learning Value | 西班牙语:起源、全球地位与学习价值
Spanish is one of the few languages that can genuinely be called global. It is spoken as a first language on three continents, studied in schools from Beijing to Boston, and used daily in diplomacy, business, film and literature. For students at GCSE and A-Level, it is also one of the most rewarding language options available.
西班牙语是少数真正可以被称为"全球性"的语言之一。它在三大洲都有母语者,从北京到波士顿的学校都在教授它,它也每天出现在外交、商务、电影和文学之中。对于 GCSE 和 A-Level 阶段的学生来说,它同样是最值得选择的外语之一。
This article sets out what Spanish is, where it came from, how it spread around the world, what makes its pronunciation and grammar distinctive, and why learning it opens both cultural and professional doors.
本文将介绍西班牙语是什么、它从何而来、如何传播到世界各地、它的发音与语法有何特点,以及为什么学习它既能打开文化之门,也能打开职业之门。
1. What Is Spanish? | 什么是西班牙语?
Spanish, called español by its own speakers and castellano in much of the Spanish-speaking world, is a Romance language within the Indo-European family. It descends from the Latin carried to the Iberian Peninsula by Roman soldiers, traders and settlers, and it is closely related to Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, French, Italian and Romanian.
西班牙语,母语者称之为 español,在西班牙语世界的许多地区也被称为 castellano(卡斯蒂利亚语),属印欧语系罗曼语族。它由罗马士兵、商人和移民带到伊比利亚半岛的拉丁语演变而来,与葡萄牙语、加泰罗尼亚语、加利西亚语、法语、意大利语和罗马尼亚语关系密切。
Today it serves as the official language of Spain, of most Latin American republics, and of Equatorial Guinea in Africa, and it is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. With more than 500 million native and second-language speakers, it is among the very small group of languages used across multiple continents every day.
如今,它是西班牙、拉丁美洲大多数共和国以及非洲的赤道几内亚的官方语言,也是联合国六种官方语言之一。全球以西班牙语为母语或第二语言的使用者超过 5 亿,它是少数几门每天都在多个大洲被使用的语言之一。
2. Historical Origins: From Vulgar Latin to Modern Spanish | 历史起源:从通俗拉丁语到现代西班牙语
Latin arrived in the Iberian Peninsula in 218 BC with the Roman armies. What ordinary people actually spoke was not classical literary Latin but Vulgar Latin, which varied from region to region. After the Western Roman Empire collapsed, these regional forms of speech drifted apart, and the ancestor of modern Spanish emerged in the north-central area around the kingdom of Castile.
公元前 218 年,拉丁语随罗马军队进入伊比利亚半岛。普通人所说的并非古典文学拉丁语,而是各地有所差异的"通俗拉丁语"。西罗马帝国崩溃后,这些地方性语言逐渐分化,现代西班牙语的祖先在卡斯蒂利亚王国所在的中北部地区逐渐成形。
The earliest written traces of this emerging Romance speech appear in marginal notes added to Latin manuscripts, and by the late Middle Ages Castilian had become the dominant written and administrative language of the peninsula. Two milestones in 1492 were decisive: Antonio de Nebrija published the first grammar of Castilian, and Columbus reached the Americas, beginning the export of the language across the Atlantic.
这种新兴罗曼语最早的书面痕迹出现在拉丁文手稿边缘的注释中;到中世纪后期,卡斯蒂利亚语已成为半岛占主导地位的书面与行政语言。1492 年有两个决定性的里程碑:安东尼奥·德·内布里哈出版了第一部卡斯蒂利亚语语法书,同年哥伦布抵达美洲,开始了这门语言跨越大西洋的传播。
In 1713 the Real Academia Española was founded to standardise spelling and vocabulary, and its dictionary remains a reference point for the language today.
1713 年,西班牙皇家学院成立,负责规范拼写和词汇,其词典至今仍是这门语言的重要参考。
3. Arabic, Gothic and Celtic Influences | 阿拉伯语、哥特语与凯尔特语的影响
Spanish is a Romance language, but it is not a pure one. Between 711 and 1492 much of the peninsula was under Muslim rule, and Arabic left a deep mark on the vocabulary. Roughly four thousand Spanish words are of Arabic origin, many of them recognisable by the prefix al-.
- Guadalquivir, from al-wādī al-kabīr (the great river) — 瓜达尔基维尔河
Germanic influence came earlier, through the Visigoths, and survives in words such as guerra (war), ganar (to win or earn), ropa (clothing), blanco (white) and espía (spy). Celtic influence is thinner and more debated, but it is generally seen in place names built on -briga (a hill fort) and in a handful of everyday words such as camino (path, road).
日耳曼语的影响更早,通过西哥特人传入,保存在诸如 guerra(战争)、ganar(赢得、赚取)、ropa(衣服)、blanco(白色)、espía(间谍)等词中。凯尔特语的影响较小且更具争议,但通常被认为体现在以 -briga(山丘堡垒)构成的地名中,以及 camino(小路、道路)等少量日常词汇里。
4. Global Ranking: How Big Is Spanish? | 全球排名:西班牙语有多大?
Depending on which measure is used, Spanish occupies different positions in world rankings, and exam answers should be precise about this. By total number of speakers, it is usually placed fourth, after Chinese, English and Hindi. By number of native speakers alone, it is normally ranked second, after Mandarin Chinese.
| Official language in | 官方语言国家数 | About 20 countries | 约 20 个国家 | Plus Puerto Rico | 另加波多黎各 |
| UN official languages | 联合国官方语言 | 1 of 6 | 六分之一 | With Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian | 与阿拉伯语、中文、英语、法语、俄语并列 |
More than 500 million people use Spanish as a native or second language, and the total approaches 600 million when learners with limited proficiency are included. Growth is concentrated in the United States and in parts of Africa, while demographic change is slowly reducing its share in some Latin American countries.
超过 5 亿人把西班牙语作为母语或第二语言使用,如果把水平有限的 learners 也计算在内,总数接近 6 亿。其增长主要集中在美国和非洲部分地区,而人口结构变化正在缓慢降低它在部分拉美国家中的比重。
5. Official Status in Spain and Latin America | 在西班牙与拉丁美洲的官方地位
Spanish is not only the official language of Spain; it is also the official language of the great majority of Latin American countries, including Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the Central American republics. In Spain, it is the official language of the whole state, while Catalan, Galician, Basque and Aranese hold co-official status in their own regions.
The Spanish spoken across this vast area is remarkably uniform in grammar and formal vocabulary, which is why a student who learns the standard language in Beijing can read a Mexican newspaper, follow a Colombian news broadcast and write to an Argentine university without changing system.
在这片广阔区域内所使用的西班牙语,在语法和正式词汇上高度统一。因此,一名在北京学习标准西班牙语的学生,可以直接读懂墨西哥报纸、听懂哥伦比亚新闻、给阿根廷的大学写信,而无需更换语言体系。
6. Spanish in the United States | 西班牙语在美国
In the United States, Spanish is by a wide margin the second most widely spoken language. Around 42 million people speak it at home, and the Hispanic population exceeds 60 million. That makes the United States the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world by population, after Mexico.
在美国,西班牙语是使用人数遥遥领先的第二大语言。约有 4200 万人在家中使用西班牙语,拉美裔人口超过 6000 万。这使得美国成为按人口计世界第二大西班牙语国家,仅次于墨西哥。
Many Americans learn Spanish as a second language at school, and Spanish is the most commonly taken foreign language in US high schools and universities. Spanish-language media, from television networks to newspapers and streaming platforms, are part of mainstream national life rather than a niche market.
许多美国人把西班牙语作为第二语言在学校学习,它是美国中学和大学中选修人数最多的外语。从电视网到报纸、流媒体平台,西班牙语媒体已成为美国主流社会生活的一部分,而非小众市场。
7. Regional Varieties: Castilian and Latin American Spanish | 地区变体:卡斯蒂利亚语与拉美西语
Most learners begin with one of two broad standards: Peninsular Spanish, based on the speech of central and northern Spain, and Latin American Spanish, based largely on Mexican and Colombian usage. The differences are modest and rarely block communication, but they matter in listening and reading exams.
多数学习者从两种广义标准之一入手:以西班牙中北部口语为基础的半岛西班牙语,和主要以墨西哥、哥伦比亚用法为基础的拉美西班牙语。两者差异不大,很少妨碍交流,但在听力和阅读考试中很重要。
- Pronunciation: most of Spain distinguishes c/z from s; Latin America generally uses seseo, so casa and caza sound alike. — 西班牙大部分地区区分 c/z 与 s,拉美普遍使用 seseo, casa 与 caza 同音。
- Address: Spain uses vosotros for informal plural you; Latin America uses ustedes. — 西班牙用 vosotros 表示非正式复数"你们",拉美用 ustedes。
- Voseo: Argentina, Uruguay and parts of Central America use vos instead of tú. — 阿根廷、乌拉圭和中美洲部分地区用 vos 代替 tú。
- Vocabulary: ordenador vs computadora (computer); coche vs carro or auto (car); móvil vs cel
