📚 Year 7 Cambridge Media: Interdisciplinary Integrated Question Practice | Year
In Year 7 Cambridge Media Studies, interdisciplinary questions are designed to mirror real-world media. You analyse texts not only through the lens of media language and representation but also by drawing on skills from English, History, Science, Mathematics and beyond. This integrated practice sharpens your ability to decode messages, evaluate data and create effective media products.
1. What an Interdisciplinary Question Looks Like | 跨学科题型长什么样
Almost every integrated question has three parts: a stimulus, a command word and a subject lens. The stimulus is the media text in front of you - a charity poster, a 1950s advertisement, a news bar chart, a film still or a social media screenshot. The command word tells you how deep to go, and the subject lens tells you which toolkit to reach for.
- Identify - name a feature in one or two words. /
- Describe - say what you can see, hear or read, with detail. /
- Explain - give a reason using 'because' or 'so that'.
- Analyse - break down how and why meaning is made.
- Evaluate - weigh strengths and weaknesses, then reach a judgement. /
- Create - produce your own text for a stated audience and purpose. /
Marks are usually split between media knowledge and the partner subject's skill, so a strong answer names a media concept and then applies the other subject's method to it.
2. Media & English: Analysing Persuasive Language |
Media texts such as magazine advertisements, charity posters and social media campaigns rely on persuasive language to grab attention and influence audiences. Interdisciplinary questions often ask you to spot techniques like alliteration, rhetorical questions, emotive words and imperatives, and to explain their effect. Naming the device earns one mark; explaining the effect on a specific audience earns the next.
Example question: Analyse the slogan 'Feed a Child, Fuel a Future'. Identify and explain two persuasive devices.
Answer: The slogan uses alliteration (the repeated 'f' in 'Feed' and 'Fuel') to make the line catchy and memorable. It also employs a positive metaphor in 'Fuel a Future', suggesting that donating provides energy and hope. The imperative 'Feed' directly calls the reader to action, while the paired sentence structure creates a satisfying rhythm that makes the message easy to repeat and share.
Persuasive devices often tested are shown in the table below:
| Rhetorical Question | 'Isn't it time you treated yourself?'
| Emotive Language | 'heartbreaking', 'suffering' |
| Imperatives | 'Donate now', 'Act today' |
| Direct Address | 'You can make a difference' |
| Statistics | '9 out of 10 families agree' |
| Rule of Three | 'Safer, faster, fairer' |
| Metaphor | 'Fuel a Future' |
When you answer, always write the device + the quotation + the effect on a named audience. 'It uses alliteration' is a one-mark answer; 'the alliteration in "Feed a Child, Fuel a Future" makes the slogan memorable for busy commuters who will only glance at the poster for two seconds' is a full-mark answer.
3. Media & History: Propaganda, Context and Source Utility |
History gives you the context needed to explain why a media text looks the way it does. A wartime poster from 1943 is not simply old advertising; it is government persuasion aimed at a specific audience living through rationing, bombing and conscription. Without that context you can describe the poster but you cannot explain it.
Provenance questions ask about author, date, purpose and audience. Use the four-part check below before you judge a source.
- Author - who made it, and what did they want? /
- Date - when was it made, and what changed soon after?
- Purpose - to inform, persuade, entertain or sell? /
- Audience - who was meant to see it, and who was excluded? /
Common propaganda techniques recur across centuries: bandwagon (everyone else is doing it), fear (danger if you do not act), testimonial (a trusted figure endorses it), transfer (linking a product or cause to a respected symbol) and loaded language (emotionally charged words such as 'enemy' or 'victory').
Example question: How useful is this 1943 poster to a historian studying civilian morale? Answer with reference to content, origin and purpose - content tells you what people were told, origin and purpose tell you how far you can trust it.
4. Media & Science: Health Claims, Evidence and Pseudoscience |
Health, environment and technology stories appear constantly in the media, and they are the usual bridge to Science. You need to check whether a claim is supported by evidence, whether the sample was large enough, whether a correlation has been mistaken for a cause, and whether the language is more certain than the data allows.
- Sample size - 25 teenagers is a pilot study, not proof. /
- Control group - without one, you cannot rule out other causes. /
- Correlation ≠ causation - two things rising together does not mean one caused the other.
- Peer review - was the study checked by other scientists before publication? /
Example: a headline reads 'Energy Drinks Cause Heart Damage in Teens'. The original study tested 25 volunteers for two hours and measured a small short-term rise in blood pressure. The media claim is far stronger than the evidence, so a good answer states what the study actually showed, what it did not show, and how the headline exaggerates it.
Environmental claims work the same way. '100% recyclable bottle' may be technically true for the bottle body while the cap and label are not recyclable in most councils, so the design of the pack is doing persuasive work that the data does not fully support.
5. Media & Mathematics: Percentages, Averages and Charts |
Numbers in media are chosen, not neutral. Integrated questions frequently ask you to calculate a value, compare two statistics or challenge a claim. Learn the four formulas below and you can handle most data questions in a Year 7 media paper.
Percentage change = (new value − old value) ÷ old value × 100%
Mean = sum of all values ÷ number of values
Median = the middle value when the data is put in order
Range = largest value − smallest value
Example: an advertisement claims 'Now 35% more free!' The old pack was 400 g and the new pack is 540 g. Check the claim.
(540 − 400) ÷ 400 × 100% = 140 ÷ 400 × 100% = 35%
Here the claim is accurate. If the new pack were 500 g, the real increase would be only 25%, so the advertiser would be exaggerating. Always show your working, state the units and finish with a sentence that judges the claim, not just the number.
Watch for two classic tricks. First, a bar chart with a y-axis that does not start at zero makes a small change look dramatic. Second, a mean can be pulled upwards by one huge value, which is why journalists sometimes prefer the median when reporting income.
6. Media & Geography: Place, Stereotype and the Single Story |
Where a story happens changes how it is told. Geography and global citizenship skills help you notice that some places appear in the news only during disasters, and that travel advertising sells an idealised version of a country rather than the country itself.
- Place stereotype - is a whole continent described with one adjective? /
- Single story - when one narrative repeats, it becomes the only story an audience knows. /
- Framing - 'us and them' language turns neighbours into outsiders. /
