📚 Cambridge Year 7 Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework & Model Essay | 剑桥七年级哲学:论文写作框架与范文
Writing your first philosophy essay in Year 7 can feel like a big challenge. Unlike other subjects where you are simply asked to describe facts, philosophy requires you to think deeply, build arguments and question your own beliefs. Many students arrive from Science or History lessons used to writing down what happened, and then discover that a philosophy essay wants something quite different: a position that you defend. This guide will give you a clear framework and a model answer so you can approach any philosophy essay with confidence.
在七年级开始写第一篇哲学论文,可能会让你觉得颇具挑战。与其他只要求描述事实的学科不同,哲学需要你进行深入思考,构建论证,并质疑自己的信念。许多同学从科学课或历史课带来了"把发生的事情写下来"的习惯,然后发现哲学论文想要的完全是另一种东西:一个由你自己辩护的立场。本指南会为你提供一套清晰的写作框架和一篇范文,让你能自信地应对任何哲学论文题目。
1. Introduction: What is a Philosophy Essay? | 什么是哲学论文?
A philosophy essay is not a story or a summary of someone else's ideas. It is a structured piece of writing where you present your own viewpoint on a big question, support it with reasons and consider other perspectives. The goal is to show that you can think clearly and logically about an issue. In Year 7, your teacher is not looking for the one 'correct' answer - many philosophical questions have no agreed answer at all. They are looking for evidence of a mind at work: a position that is stated, defended and then tested.
哲学论文不是一个故事,也不是他人观点的简单总结。它是一篇结构严谨的文章,你需要就某个重大问题提出自己的观点,用理由来支撑它,并考虑其他不同的看法。其目的在于展现出你能够清晰、有逻辑地思考问题。在七年级,老师寻找的并不是唯一的"正确答案"——许多哲学问题根本没有公认的答案。他们想看到的是一个正在思考的头脑:一个被明确提出、被辩护、又被检验过的立场。
Three skills are being assessed in almost every philosophy essay you will write at this stage. The first is explanation: can you make an idea clear to someone who has never met it before? The second is argument: can you give reasons that actually support your claim, rather than just repeating it? The third is evaluation: can you step back and ask how strong your own reasons really are?
在这个阶段你写的几乎每一篇哲学论文,都在考察三项能力。第一是解释:你能把一个想法讲清楚,让从未接触过它的人也听懂吗?第二是论证:你能给出真正支持你观点的理由,而不是把观点重复一遍吗?第三是评价:你能退后一步,追问自己的理由究竟有多强吗?
It also helps to know what a philosophy essay is not. It is not a list of opinions, it is not a description of what your family believes, and it is not a competition to use the longest words. A short, precise sentence that does real work is always better than a long, vague one that sounds impressive but says nothing.
同样重要的是知道哲学论文不是什么。它不是一堆观点的罗列,不是对家人信仰的描述,也不是比谁用的词更长更难。一句简短但真正起作用的话,永远胜过一句听起来华丽、实际上什么也没说的长句。
2. Understanding the Question | 理解题目
Before you start writing, read the question several times. Philosophy questions often begin with 'Should', 'Is it ever acceptable' or 'Do we have a duty to'. Underline the key words. For example, if the question is 'Is it ever acceptable to lie?', the key terms are 'acceptable' and 'lie'. Think about what counts as a lie and what 'acceptable' means. Is it about society or your personal morals?
在动笔之前,把题目多读几遍。哲学问题常以 "Should(是否应该)"、"Is it ever acceptable(这样做可以接受吗)" 或 "Do we have a duty to(我们有义务……吗)" 开头。划出关键词。比如,如果题目是 "Is it ever acceptable to lie?(撒谎是否可以被接受?)",关键词就是 "acceptable(可以接受)" 和 "lie(撒谎)"。想一想什么行为算作撒谎,"可以接受" 又意味着什么,是出于社会规范还是个人道德?
The small word 'ever' in that question is doing a lot of work. It means you must look for at least one case, however unusual, in which lying might be permitted - or argue that there is no such case at all. Missing 'ever' is one of the most common reasons a Year 7 essay drifts away from the question and loses marks.
那个不起眼的小词 "ever(在任何情况下)" 其实承担了很重的任务。它意味着你必须找出至少一种情形——无论多么特殊——来说明撒谎或许可以被允许;或者论证根本不存在这样的情形。忽略 "ever",是七年级论文偏题、丢分最常见的原因之一。
Command words also tell you what kind of thinking is required. The table below shows the words you will meet most often in Year 7 philosophy.
题目中的"指令词"还会告诉你需要哪一种思维。下表列出了七年级哲学中最常出现的指令词。
| Command word | What it asks you to do | 中文说明 |
| Is it ever acceptable...? | Find a case, or prove there is none | 找出一种情形,或证明不存在 |
| Should we...? | Give reasons for a moral rule or practice | 为某条道德规则或做法给出理由 |
| Do we have a duty to...? | Decide whether an obligation exists, and why | 判断某项义务是否存在,以及为什么 |
| Compare / Evaluate | Weigh two views and say which is stronger | 权衡两种观点,并说明哪一种更强 |
Finally, write a one-sentence answer to the question in the margin before you plan. This is your working thesis. It may change as you think, and that is completely normal - philosophers revise their positions constantly.
最后,在做规划之前,先在页边用一句话写下你对题目的回答。这就是你的"暂定论点"。随着思考的深入,它可能会改变,这完全正常——哲学家们一直在修正自己的立场。
3. Building an Argument Structure | 构建论证结构
Every good essay has a clear plan. Use this basic skeleton: Introduction (state your position), 2-3 Body Paragraphs (each giving a reason), one Counter-Argument paragraph (show the other side and reply to it), and a Conclusion (summarise and restate your view). Drafting this skeleton before you write prevents you from going off-topic.
任何一篇好的论文都有清晰的布局。请使用这个基本框架:引言(表明你的立场)、2 至 3 个主体段落(每一段给出一个理由)、一个反方论证段(展示对立的看法并作出回应),以及结论(总结并再次表明你的观点)。在动笔之前先把这个骨架写出来,可以防止你跑题。
The skeleton is not a cage; it is a map. Once you can see the whole shape of the essay on half a page, you can spend your energy on the thinking instead of worrying about what comes next.
这个骨架不是牢笼,而是一张地图。当你能在半页纸上看到整篇文章的形状时,你就可以把精力放在思考上,而不是担心下一步该写什么。
A completed plan for the question 'Is it ever acceptable to lie?' might look like this:
针对 "撒谎是否可以被接受?" 这一题目,一份完整的提纲可能长这样:
- Introduction: Lying is usually wrong, but acceptable in rare cases where it prevents serious harm. | 引言:撒谎通常是错的,但在极少数能防止严重伤害的情况下是可以接受的。
- Body 1: Consequences matter - a lie that saves a life produces more good than harm. | 主体一:后果很重要——一条能救命的谎言带来的好处大于伤害。
- Body 2: Trust matters - if everyone lied, promises and friendships would collapse. | 主体二:信任很重要——如果人人都撒谎,承诺和友谊都会崩塌。
- Counter-argument: Some say lying is always wrong because it uses people. | 反方论证:有人认为撒谎永远是错的,因为它把他人当作工具。
- Reply: But refusing to lie can also use people, by sacrificing them to a rule. | 回应:但拒绝撒谎同样可能把人当作工具,为了一条规则而牺牲他人。
- Conclusion: Rule against lying, with a narrow exception for protecting life. | 结论:确立反对撒谎的规则,但为保护生命保留一个狭窄的例外。
Notice that the plan already contains the words 'because', 'but' and 'therefore'. If your plan has no 'but' in it, your essay probably has no evaluation, and evaluation is where the higher marks live.
注意这份提纲里已经出现了 "because(因为)"、"but(但是)" 和 "therefore(因此)"。如果你的提纲里一个 "but" 都没有,那你的文章很可能没有评价,而评价恰恰是高分所在。
4. Writing a Strong Introduction | 写好引言
An introduction in philosophy does three jobs quickly: it shows you understand the question, it defines any unclear terms, and it states your position. You do not need a dramatic opening about the history of humanity. Two to four sentences is usually enough.
哲学论文的引言要迅速完成三件事:表明你读懂了题目,界定任何含义不清的术语,并陈述你的立场。你不需要一段关于人类历史的戏剧性开场白。两到四句话通常就够了。
Here is a weak opening: 'Philosophers have argued about lying for thousands of years. In this essay I will talk about lying.' The problem is that it promises nothing and defines nothing. A stronger version names the terms and takes a side immediately.
这是一个较弱的开头:"Philosophers have argued about lying for thousands of years. In this essay I will talk about lying.(哲学家们已经争论撒谎数千年了。本文我将谈谈撒谎。)" 问题在于它既没有承诺任何立场,也没有界定任何概念。更强的写法会直接点明术语并立刻站定一边。
A model introduction might read: 'A lie is a statement made with the intention to deceive. I will argue that lying is usually wrong because it damages trust, but that it can be acceptable in rare cases where it is the only way to prevent serious harm. I will consider the objection that lying is always wrong, and explain why I think that rule is too strict.'
一段范文式的引言可以是:"A lie is a statement made with the intention to deceive. I will argue that lying is usually wrong because it damages trust, but that it can be acceptable in rare cases where it is the only way to prevent serious harm. I will consider the objection that lying is always wrong, and explain why I think that rule is too strict."(谎言是带着欺骗意图说出的话。我将论证:撒谎通常是错的,因为它破坏信任;但在极少数情况下,当它是防止严重伤害的唯一方式时,撒谎是可以接受的。我会考虑"撒谎永远是错的"这一反驳,并解释为什么我认为那条规则过于严苛。)
Notice how much information those three sentences carry: a definition, a thesis, a condition, and a signpost to the counter-argument. That is what a good introduction looks like in Year 7 - short, dense and directional.
注意这三句话承载了多少信息:一个定义、一个论点、一个限定条件,以及通向反方论证的路标。这就是七年级一篇好引言的样子——简短、密集、有方向。
5. Body Paragraphs: Claim, Reason, Evidence, Link | 主体段落:主张、理由、证据、联系
Each body paragraph should do exactly one job: give one reason for your thesis and explain why that reason works. A simple structure that never fails is Claim - Reason - Evidence - Link. State the claim, explain the reasoning behind it, illustrate it with an example, then link back to the question.
每个主体段落只应做一件事:为你的论点提供一个理由,并说明这个理由为什么成立。一个几乎不会出错的结构是"主张—理由—证据—联系"。先陈述主张,再解释背后的推理,用一个例子加以说明,最后回扣题目。
Many students write the claim and then stop, expecting the reader to do the work. But a claim alone is just an opinion. The reasoning is what turns an opinion into an argument.
很多同学写完主张就停下了,期待读者自己去补充。但只有主张,那只是一个意见。真正把意见变成论证的,是其中的推理。
Think of the structure as a chain that must hold:
把这一结构想象成一条必须承重的链条:
Claim → Reason → Evidence → Link
In logical form, a simple argument looks like this: if lying damages trust, and trust is necessary for friendship, then lying damages friendship. Written with symbols:
用逻辑形式表达,一个简单的论证是这样的:如果撒谎会破坏信任,而信任是友谊的必要条件,那么撒谎就会破坏友谊。用符号写出:
P → Q ; P ; ∴ Q
ph really has the shape P → Q, or whether it is only Q, repeated twice in different words.
你不需要在论文里使用符号。重点在于检查你的段落是否真的具备 P → Q 的形状,还是只有一个 Q,用不同的话重复了两遍。
- Avoid starting every sentence with 'I think'. | 避免让每个句子都以 "I think(我认为)" 开头。
- Use connectives: because, therefore, however, this shows that. | 使用连接词:because、therefore、however、this shows that。
- Keep one reason per paragraph. Two reasons in one paragraph usually means neither is explained properly. | 每段只放一个理由。一段里塞两个理由,通常意味着两个都没讲清楚。
6. Using Examples and Thought Experiments | 使用例子与思想实验
Philosophy becomes real through examples. A good example is short, specific and clearly connected to your argument. 'A man lied once' is not an example. 'A doctor tells a dying patient that the medicine is working, to let the family say goodbye in peace' is an example, because we can see exactly what is at stake.
哲学是通过例子变得具体的。好的例子简短、具体,并且与你的论证清晰相连。"有个人撒过一次谎" 不算例子。"一位医生对临终病人说药正在起效,好让家人平静地告别" 才算例子,因为我们能清楚看到其中牵涉的利害。
Thought experiments are imaginary cases invented to test a principle. The famous trolley problem asks whether you would divert a runaway trolley to kill one person in order to save five. In a Year 7 essay, you do not need to solve the trolley problem. You need to use it to show that a simple rule such as 'never kill' can become difficult in unusual situations.
思想实验是为了检验某条原则而虚构出来的情景。著名的"电车难题"问的是:你是否会改变失控电车的方向,牺牲一人以救五人。在七年级论文里,你不需要解决电车难题。你需要用它来说明:像 "绝不杀人" 这样简单的规则,在特殊情境中会变得棘手。
Plato's Ring of Gyges is another useful case. A shepherd finds a ring that makes him invisible, and uses it to seduce the queen and seize power. The question is whether anyone would stay moral if they could never be caught. This example is powerful because it separates two possible reasons for being good: fear of punishment, and genuine concern for others.
柏拉图的"古格斯戒指"是另一个好用的案例。一位牧羊人捡到一枚能让他隐身的戒指,并用它引诱王后、夺取权力。问题在于:如果永远不会被抓住,还有人会保持道德吗?这个例子之所以有力,是因为它把"做好人"的两种可能理由分开了:害怕惩罚,与真正关心他人。
Always finish an example with a linking sentence. Two or three sentences explaining what the case shows is what earns the marks; the story itself earns none.
例子之后一定要写一句"联系句"。真正拿分的是那两三句解释这个案例说明了什么的分析,故事本身一分不得。
7. Counter-Arguments and Replies | 反方论证与回应
A counter-argument is the strongest version of the opposite view, not a silly version that is easy to knock down. Presenting a weak opponent and defeating it is called a straw man, and examiners notice it immediately.
反方论证是"对立观点最强的版本",而不是一个轻易就能打倒的愚蠢版本。树立一个软弱的对手再把它击败,这叫"稻草人谬误",阅卷老师一眼就能看出。
The counter-argument paragraph should do three things: state the opposing view fairly, explain why someone might hold it, and then respond. The response is not simply 'but I disagree'. It should say what is right about the objection and where it goes wrong.
反方论证段应该做三件事:公正地陈述对立观点,解释为什么有人会持这种看法,然后作出回应。回应不能只是 "but I disagree(但我不同意)"。它应该指出这个反驳哪里说得对,又在哪里出了问题。
A useful sentence pattern is: ' ful because ___. However, it assumes ___, and that assumption is questionable because ___.'
一个实用的句式是:" ful because ___. However, it assumes ___, and that assumption is questionable because ___."(这个反驳很有力,因为……然而,它假定……而这个假定值得怀疑,因为……)
For example, if a classmate argues that lying is always wrong because it breaks a rule, a good reply might be: this is powerful because rules protect us from each person deciding for themselves what is right; however, it assumes that a rule matters more than the harm it prevents, and that is questionable when the harm is a death.
例如,如果同学主张"撒谎永远是错的,因为它破坏了规则",一个好的回应可能是:这很有力,因为规则保护我们不必由每个人自行决定什么是对的;然而,它假定规则比它所阻止的伤害更重要,而当伤害是死亡时,这个假定就值得怀疑。
Notice the balance. You are not surrendering your thesis; you are showing that you have held it up to the strongest light you can find.
注意这种平衡感。你并不是放弃自己的论点,而是表明你已经把它拿到能找到的最强的光线下检验过了。
8. Conclusion: How to Finish | 结论:如何收尾
A conclusion should not introduce a brand new argument. Instead, it should summarise the path you have taken, restate your position in fresh words, and say why the question matters. Three or four sentences is plenty.
结论不应引入全新的论证。它应当总结你走过的路径,用新的措辞重申你的立场,并说明这个问题为什么重要。三到四句话就足够。
Compare a weak conclusion - 'So that is why I think lying is wrong sometimes' - with a stronger one: 'Lying damages the trust that makes cooperation possible, so the general rule against it should stand. But when a lie is the only way to prevent serious harm, insisting on honesty treats the rule as more important than the person it was meant to protect. The answer, then, is a firm rule with a narrow exception.'
比较一下较弱的结论——"所以这就是为什么我认为撒谎有时候是错的"——与更强的结论:"Lying damages the trust that makes cooperation possible, so the general rule against it should stand. But when a lie is the only way to prevent serious harm, insisting on honesty treats the rule as more important than the person it was meant to protect. The answer, then, is a firm rule with a narrow exception."(撒谎破坏了使合作得以可能的信任,因此反对撒谎的一般规则应当保留。但当谎言是防止严重伤害的唯一方式时,坚持诚实就是把规则看得比它本要保护的人更重要。因此答案是:一条坚定的规则,加上一个狭窄的例外。)
You should also avoid the phrase 'in conclusion' followed by nothing new. If your last paragraph could have been written before you did any thinking, it is not a conclusion.
同时要避免写"in conclusion(总之)"后面却没有任何新内容。如果你的最后一段在你思考之前就能写出来,那它就不是结论。
9. Language, Tone and Philosophical Vocabulary | 语言、语气与哲学术语
Philosophy essays use formal but plain English. Long words are not the same as deep thoughts. Aim for precision: 'most people' is better than 'everyone', and 'usually wrong' is better than 'bad'.
哲学论文使用的是正式但平实的英语。长词并不等于深刻的思想。目标是精确:用 "most people(大多数人)" 比用 "everyone(所有人)" 好,用 "usually wrong(通常是错的)" 比用 "bad(坏的)" 好。
Using the first person is perfectly acceptable in philosophy. 'I will argue that...' is standard academic practice, and it makes your position clear. What you should avoid is 'I just feel that...', because feelings are not arguments.
在哲学写作中使用第一人称完全没问题。"I will argue that..." 是标准的学术写法,能让你的立场更清楚。你应当避免的是 "I just feel that...(我只是觉得……)",因为感觉不是论证。
Small words do heavy lifting. Learn to use these precisely:
小词有大用。请学会精确使用下面这些词:
- therefore - signals a conclusion you have earned. | 因此——引出你已经论证出来的结论。
- however - signals a turn, an objection or a limitation. | 然而——引出转折、反驳或限制。
- implies - signals what a view would commit you to. | 意味着——指出某种观点会让你承担什么。
- assumes - signals a hidden premise you can question. | 假定——指出一个可以被质疑的隐含前提。
- insofar as - limits a claim to one respect. | 就……而言——把主张限制在某一个方面。
A useful habit is to circle every 'because' in your draft. Each one should be followed by a genuine reason, not a restatement. 'Lying is wrong because it is bad' fails that test.
一个有用的习惯是:把草稿中每一个 "because" 都圈出来。每一个后面都应该跟着真正的理由,而不是重复。'Lying is wrong because it is bad'(撒谎是错的,因为它是坏的)就没通过这个测试。
10. A Model Essay: 'Is it ever acceptable to lie?' | 范文:"撒谎是否可以被接受?"
Read the model below slowly, noticing how each paragraph performs one task. The plan from Section 3 is followed exactly.
请慢慢阅读下面这篇范文,注意每一段是如何完成一项任务的。它严格遵循了第 3 节的提纲。
Introduction. A lie is a statement made with the intention to deceive someone who has a right to the truth. I will argue that lying is usually wrong because it damages trust, but that it is acceptable in rare cases where it is the only way to prevent serious harm. I will consider the objection that lying is always wrong, and explain why that rule is too strict.
引言。谎言是带着欺骗意图说出的话,对象是有权知道真相的人。我将论证:撒谎通常是错的,因为它破坏信任;但在极少数情况下,当它是防止严重伤害的唯一方式时,撒谎是可以接受的。我会考虑"撒谎永远是错的"这一反驳,并解释为什么那条规则过于严苛。
Body 1. The first reason to think lying can sometimes be acceptable is that consequences matter. If a doctor truthfully tells a violent man where his former partner is hiding, the truth may lead to a serious attack. In this case, the harm caused by honesty is far greater than the harm caused by a single lie. Since we already accept that protecting people from serious harm is a duty, we should accept that a lie which prevents that harm can be justified.
主体一。认为撒谎有时可以接受的第一条理由是:后果很重要。如果一位医生如实告诉一个暴力男子其前伴侣藏在哪里,这个真相可能导致严重的伤害。在这种情况下,诚实造成的伤害远大于一句
