📚 Year 7 Cambridge Business: Unit Test Mock Exam Analysis |
Unit tests are a vital part of your Cambridge Year 7 Business Studies journey. They help you consolidate knowledge, reveal gaps early, and prepare you for the longer examinations that come later. This mock test analysis breaks down a typical unit paper question by question, so you can see exactly what examiners expect, how marks are awarded, and how to structure your answers to gain every available point.
1. Overview of the Mock Unit Test |
This mock paper is structured to mirror a real end-of-unit assessment. It includes 10 multiple-choice questions (Section A), 3 short-answer questions worth 4-6 marks each (Section B), and a case study with 4 extended questions (Section C). The total marks add up to 50, to be completed in 45 minutes. The content covers Needs and Wants, Factors of Production, Entrepreneurship, Business Objectives, Supply and Demand, Stakeholders, and Market Research. The table below shows how the 50 marks are distributed.
| Section | Question type | Number | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Multiple choice | 10 | 10 |
| B | Short answer | 3 | 15 |
| C | Case study and extended response | 4 | 25 |
| Total | - | 17 | 50 |
Notice that Section C alone is worth half of the paper. This is deliberate: the case study tests whether you can apply business ideas to an unfamiliar situation, not simply recall definitions. A student who memorises every term but cannot use it in context will usually score well in Section A and struggle in Section C.
2. Multiple Choice: Needs, Wants and Goods |
Question 1: Which of the following is a 'want' rather than a 'need'? A) Drinking water B) Basic shelter C) A holiday abroad D) Nutritious food. The correct answer is C. Needs are items essential for survival, such as water, food, and a place to live. A holiday abroad is a desire that improves quality of life but is not necessary to stay alive.
Many students confuse premium food with a 'want', but nutritious food is a need. Recognising this difference is a foundational concept in Business Studies because businesses must identify whether their products satisfy needs or wants in order to target the right market. A business selling bottled water is satisfying a need; a business selling luxury spa weekends is satisfying a want, and it must therefore market itself very differently.
A useful revision habit is to sort ten everyday products into two columns, 'need' and 'want', and then write one sentence explaining your reason for each. This forces you to justify your thinking in the same way an exam answer requires.
3. Multiple Choice: Goods and Services |
Question 2: A hairdresser cutting a customer' ) service C) need D) want. The correct answer is B, service. A good is a tangible item that you can see, touch and store, such as a bottle of shampoo. A service is intangible: it is an activity performed for the customer, and it is consumed at the moment it is produced.
The exam often tests three features of services: intangibility (you cannot take it home), inseparability (production and consumption happen at the same time), and variability (the quality may differ each time). Ask yourself: can I store it, resell it, or drop it on my foot? If the answer is no, you are almost certainly looking at a service.
4. Factors of Production |
Question 3: Which factor of production is rewarded by interest? A) Land B) Labour C) Capital D) Enterprise. The correct answer is C, capital. There are four factors of production, and each one earns a different reward. Examiners expect you to name the factor, define it, give a business example, and state its reward.
| Factor | Meaning | Business example | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Land | Natural resources | A factory site, timber, oil | Rent |
| Labour | Human effort and skill | Shop assistants, designers | Wages |
| Capital | Man-made resources used to produce | Machines, vans, computers | Interest |
| Enterprise | Organising the other three and taking risk | The founder of a start-up | Profit |
A common error is to describe capital as money. In Business Studies, money used to buy equipment is finance; the equipment itself is capital. Another frequent slip is to write 'enterprise' when the question asks about risk-taking by the owner - enterprise is the factor, the entrepreneur is the person.
5. Entrepreneurship and the Entrepreneur |
Question 4: Which of the following is the best definition of an entrepreneur? A) A person who works for a wage B) A person who organises the other factors of production and takes the risk C) A person who lends money to a business D) A person who buys shares in a large company. The correct answer is B.
The entrepreneur combines land, labour and capital, makes the key decisions, and carries the risk of loss if the idea fails. In return, the entrepreneur may earn profit - but profit is not guaranteed, which is exactly what makes the role risky. Option C describes a lender and option D describes a shareholder, both of whom risk money but do not run the business day to day.
Typical entrepreneur qualities asked about in tests include willingness to take calculated risks, creativity, determination, leadership and good organisational skills. When you answer, always link the quality to a business outcome: 'determination means the owner keeps trading through a difficult first year, which improves the chance of survival.'
6. Business Objectives |
Question 5: A newly opened small business is most likely to have which objective in its first year? A) Maximising market share B) Survival C) Becoming a multinational D) Paying high dividends. The correct answer is B, survival. Objectives change as a business grows, and examiners love this idea.
Common objectives include survival, profit maximisation, sales growth, increasing market share, improving customer satisfaction, and social or environmental aims such as reducing waste. A charity will have different objectives from a private limited company, and a public sector organisation will have different objectives again.
In extended answers, avoid writing that a business 'just wants more money'. Explain the objective, give a reason why it matters at that stage, and comment on a possible conflict - for example, cutting prices to grow market share may reduce short-term profit.
7. Supply and Demand |
come zero. The correct answer is B. The demand curve slopes downwards: as price rises, fewer customers are willing and able to buy. The supply curve slopes upwards: a higher price gives producers more incentive to supply.
and there is no shortage or surplus. If the price is set above equilibrium, a surplus appears and sellers cut prices; if it is set below, a shortage appears and buyers bid prices up.
At equilibrium: Qd = Qs, and the market clears
Do not confuse a movement along a curve with a shift of a curve. A change in price causes movement along the curve. A change in any other condition - income, tastes, the price of a substitute, the cost of raw materials - shifts the whole curve. This distinction appears in almost every supply and demand question at this level.
8. Stakeholders |
A stakeholder is any individual or group affected by, or with an interest in, the decisions of a business. Key stakeholder groups are owners and shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, the local community, the government and pressure groups. Each has different aims, which is why conflict is common.
For example, employees want higher wages and safer working conditions, while owners want to keep costs low to protect profit. Customers want low prices and high quality; suppliers want to be paid quickly and receive repeat orders. A business that pays suppliers later improves its own cash flow but strains that relationship.
A strong exam answer names at least two stakeholders, states what each wants, and then explains the conflict using a business example. Simply listing groups will not reach the higher marks, because the examiner is looking for explanation, not recall.
9. Market Research |
Market research is the process of collecting and analysing information about customers, competitors and the market. Primary research is collected first-hand by the business - surveys, interviews, questionnaires, observation and focus groups. Secondary research uses data that already exists - government statistics, competitor websites, trade reports and news articles.
Each method has strengths and weaknesses. Questionnaires reach many people cheaply but may contain leading questions and suffer from low response rates. Interviews give rich detail but are slow and costly. Focus groups reveal attitudes but can be dominated by one or two strong personalities.
Examiners also test sampling. A sample is the group of people selected to take part. A random sample gives everyone an equal chance of selection, whereas a quota sample deliberately reflects the make-up of the target market. A biased sample produces unreliable results, which can lead a business to launch a product nobody wants.
10. Section B: Short-Answer Technique | B
Section B questions are worth 4-6 marks each, and the marks are usually awarded per valid point or per linked explanation. Read the command word carefully: 'state' needs a short answer, 'describe' needs detail, 'explain' needs a reason, and 'analyse' needs a chain of consequences.
Take a typical 4-mark question: 'Explain two reasons why a small cafe should carry out market research before launching a new menu.' A full-mark answer would give two developed points. The first might be that research identifies what customers actually want, so the cafe avoids wasting money on dishes that will not sell. The second might be that research reveals competitors' prices, helping the cafe set a price that attracts customers while still covering costs.
1 point = 1 mark; 1 developed point (point + explanation) = 2 marks
A common mistake is to write one long paragraph containing three undeveloped ideas. It is better to use short paragraphs, each beginning with the point and followed by 'because' or 'this means that'. Always use business vocabulary: 'target market', 'cash flow', 'variable costs' and 'market share' all signal understanding to the examiner.
11. Section C: Case Study and Extended Response | C
Section C gives you a short scenario, typically about a small local business, followed by four questions that build in difficulty. The first question is usually a definition or a calculation, the middle questions ask for application and analysis, and the final question, often worth 8-10 marks, requires evaluation.
Application means using the evidence given in the case. If the case states that the business has 12 employees and monthly sales of 800 units, then a strong answer quotes those figures. Examiners want to see phrases such as 'according to the case' or 'this matters because the shop has limited cash'. Generic answers that could apply to any business rarely reach the upper levels.
For the final evaluation question, structure your answer as follows: a short judgement in the first sentence, two or three developed arguments with case evidence, then a conclusion that weighs the arguments and justifies your final decision. Use connectives such as 'however', 'on the other hand' and 'overall' to show balance.
12. Mark Scheme, Timing and Revision Plan |
With 50 marks available in 45 minutes, you have roughly 0.9 minutes per mark. A workable plan is 10 minutes for Section A, 14 minutes for Section B, and 21 minutes for Section C, leaving time to check your work. Never leave a Section C question blank: a partial answer with one valid point can still earn marks.
When you review this mock paper, use the table below to record where you lost marks and why. This turns a single test into a revision map for the whole unit.
| Topic | Marks lost | Reason | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needs and wants | - | Definition confused | Sort 10 products into two
