📚 Geography: Earth, Environment and Human Activity |
Geography is the integrated study of the Earth's natural environment and its human environment. It asks not only where things are, but why they are there, how they change over time, and how people and places influence one another. Sitting at the boundary between the physical and social sciences, it borrows methods from geology, biology, climatology, economics, sociology and planning, and combines them within a single spatial perspective.
The scope of the subject is therefore extremely wide. It covers the shape and size of the Earth, the layered structure of the crust, climate and weather systems, soils, water and ecosystems, and the many ways in which human activity modifies the planet's surface, atmosphere and oceans.
Within this broad field, the discipline is conventionally divided into several branches, each with its own questions, data and methods.
2. Physical Geography: Landforms and Earth Structure |
Physical geography focuses on the natural phenomena of the Earth's surface: relief and landforms, soils and soil-forming processes, and hydrological processes such as infiltration, runoff and river flow. Its central question is how the surface we see today was produced, and how it continues to change.
The answer lies partly below the surface. The Earth is layered, with a solid inner core, a molten outer core, a semi-plastic mantle and a thin, brittle crust. Convection in the mantle drives the movement of tectonic plates, and the interaction of these plates builds mountains, opens ocean basins, and creates the raw material for the rock cycle.
At the surface, weathering breaks rock down, and erosion, transport and deposition move the debris through drainage basins and coastal systems. Rivers are the most important agents in most landscapes, and their behaviour can be summarised numerically.
River discharge Q = Cross-sectional area A × Velocity v
Discharge is measured in cubic metres per second (m³ s⁻¹). A flood is, in the simplest terms, a sudden increase in discharge that exceeds the capacity of the channel to contain it.
3. Climate Systems and Ecosystems |
Climate is the long-term statistical behaviour of the atmosphere, while weather is its short-term state. Climate is controlled by latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, ocean currents, prevailing winds and relief, which together explain why two places at the same latitude can be radically different.
At the global scale, uneven heating between the equator and the poles sets up atmospheric circulation. Warm air rises at the equator, travels polewards, sinks around 30° of latitude, and returns along the surface as the trade winds. Similar circulation cells operate in mid-latitudes and near the poles, generating the world's major pressure belts and wind systems.
Climate in turn shapes ecosystems. Where temperature and rainfall are high and stable, tropical rainforest develops with extraordinary biodiversity; where rainfall is seasonal, savanna appears; where it is scarce, desert or semi-desert dominates. Each biome has its own nutrient cycle, energy flow and adaptations.
The carbon cycle links climate and ecosystems most directly. Carbon is exchanged between the atmosphere, oceans, soils and living organisms; human emissions of carbon dioxide have shifted the balance, driving global warming, sea-level rise and more frequent extreme weather.
4. Natural Hazards: Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Floods |
Natural hazards are events that threaten life, property and livelihoods. Tectonic hazards are concentrated along plate boundaries: shallow earthquakes at conservative margins, powerful earthquakes and tsunamis at destructive margins, and volcanic activity at both destructive margins and hotspots.
The severity of an earthquake depends on its magnitude, depth, distance from settlements, local geology and the vulnerability of buildings. Volcanoes bring hazards such as lava flows, ash fall, pyroclastic flows and lahars, but also benefits: fertile soils, geothermal energy and tourism.
Floods are usually climatic and hydrological in origin, produced by intense or prolonged rainfall, snowmelt, storm surges or dam failure, and made worse by deforestation, soil sealing and building on floodplains. Management strategies fall into three groups: prediction and warning, prevention and protection, and planning and preparation.
Hazard studies matter because they combine physical processes with human decisions. A physical event only becomes a disaster when it meets a vulnerable population, which is why the same magnitude of earthquake can cause very different losses in different countries.
5. Human Geography: Population and Urbanisation |
Human geography focuses on geographical phenomena generated by human activity: the distribution and density of population, the process of urbanisation, and the cultural and economic patterns that people create on the land.
Population is never evenly spread. Roughly half of humanity lives on a small fraction of the land surface, and density is the simplest measure of this concentration.
Population density D = Total population P ÷ Land area A (people km⁻²)
Distribution is explained by physical factors such as relief, climate, soil and water supply, and by human factors such as employment, political stability, accessibility and history. Migration redistributes population further, and is usually analysed using the push–pull model: people move away from negative conditions and towards perceived opportunities.
Urbanisation is the most visible demographic shift of the modern era. In 1950 fewer than one third of the world's people lived in towns and cities; today more than half do, and in many high-income countries the figure exceeds eighty per cent. Urban growth is driven by rural-to-urban migration and natural increase, and it reshapes transport, housing, employment and culture.
Population and urban studies help us understand how society interacts with its environment, and why regions differ economically, culturally and socially. They also raise difficult questions about resources, inequality and sustainability.
6. Economic Geography: Industry, Resources and Interdependence |
Economic geography examines how economic activity is distributed and organised across space. It looks at economic activities in four broad sectors: primary (extraction and farming), secondary (manufacturing and construction), tertiary (services) and quaternary (knowledge and research).
Its central concept is location. Firms weigh raw materials, energy, labour cost and skills, transport and market access, government policy and agglomeration economies, where firms benefit simply by being near one another. Different industries weight these factors differently: aluminium smelting follows cheap electricity, whereas finance follows skilled labour and connectivity.
Economic geography also reveals the development level of regions, their industrial structure and how resources are used. Resource-rich regions may remain dependent on commodity exports, while others diversify into manufacturing or services. Measuring the contribution of each sector helps explain why some economies grow faster than others.
The global economy is deeply interdependent. Production is often split into international supply chains, in which design, components, assembly and marketing take place in different countries. This interdependence brings efficiency and lower prices, but also vulnerability: a disruption in one country can halt production thousands of kilometres away.
Research in this field can therefore support regional development strategies and planning, and can promote more sustainable regional economies through diversification, infrastructure investment, skills and resource efficiency.
7. Urban Geography: Form, Function and Quality of Life | 城市地理学:形态、功能与生活质量
Urban geography studies how cities develop and how their spatial structure changes over time. It examines city size, form and function, and the quality of life of the people who live there.
Cities grow outwards and upwards, and geographers model their internal structure. Classic models include the concentric zone model, the sector model and the multiple nuclei model; modern cities are better described as polycentric, with edge cities, retail parks and business districts linked by motorways and rail.
Land use within a city reflects competition for accessible sites. The result is usually a commercial core with the highest land values, zones of transition and industry, residential areas of varying density, and, at the edge, the urban–rural fringe where development meets farmland.
Urbanisation also brings environmental and social problems: air and water pollution, waste, congestion, heat islands, housing shortages, informal settlements, segregation and inequality. Investigating these issues is central to the subject.
Because urban structure and urban social structure shape everyday life, planning matters. Planners use zoning, transport investment, green infrastructure, affordable housing and regeneration schemes to improve sustainability and liveability. Urban geography gives us a clearer understanding of how cities work and how they are likely to change, providing scientific support for urban management and planning.
8. Cultural Geography and Cultural Landscapes |
Cultural geography examines how culture is expressed in space: language, religion, ethnicity, diet, architecture and identity all have distinctive distributions and diffusion patterns.
Culture traits spread by relocation diffusion, when people carry them to new places, and by expansion diffusion, when they spread outwards from a source. Urbanisation and migration accelerate both, producing multicultural cities and hybrid landscapes.
The visible result is the cultural landscape: field patterns, settlement forms, place names, sacred sites and building materials that record how successive communities have used and interpreted a region. Reading a landscape is a core geographical skill.
Globalisation intensifies cultural exchange but also raises concerns about homogenisation and the loss of local distinctiveness. Geographers therefore study place identity, heritage conservation and the tension between global brands and local traditions.
9. Maps, Fieldwork and GIS |
Geography is a visual and practical subject. Maps, atlases, satellite images, aerial photographs and statistical data are its working tools, and scale, projection, grid references, contours and choropleth shading are the basic vocabulary.
Fieldwork turns abstract concepts into evidence. A typical investigation defines a question or hypothesis, selects sampling sites, collects primary data such as river width, depth, velocity, pebble size, pedestrian counts or environmental quality scores, and then presents the results in graphs and maps.
Geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing add a powerful layer. GIS stores data as layers — relief, land use, transport, population — that can be combined and queried, so that patterns, relationships and change over time become visible.
