1. Welcome to Year 7 Chemistry | 欢迎学习 Year 7 化学
Year 7 Chemistry is part of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Science programme, which blends biology, chemistry and physics. The chemistry strand focuses on the properties of materials, the ways they can be separated, and the changes they undergo. You will learn to make careful observations, record results in tables, and draw conclusions from evidence. By the end of the year, you will be able to explain everyday phenomena such as why sugar dissolves in tea or why iron rusts.
In the Cambridge curriculum, scientific enquiry is just as important as factual knowledge. You will plan investigations, identify variables, and evaluate the reliability of your data. This approach helps you think critically and prepares you for more advanced topics in later years.
2. Laboratory Safety and Equipment |
Before you enter the lab, you must understand the safety rules that protect everyone. Always wear safety goggles when heating substances or handling acids. Tie back long hair, tuck in loose clothing, and never eat or drink in the laboratory. If you are ever unsure about a procedure, ask your teacher before you begin.
You will also become familiar with common laboratory apparatus. A beaker holds liquids for mixing, a conical flask allows swirling without spillage, and a test tube is used for small-scale reactions. The Bunsen burner provides a controllable flame – a yellow safety flame is visible, while a blue roaring flame is hotter and used for heating. Learn to recognise a measuring cylinder, a funnel, and a thermometer from the start.
3. Scientific Enquiry Skills |
Science is not just a collection of facts; it is a method of asking questions about the natural world. In Year 7, you will learn to write a hypothesis – a testable statement that predicts an outcome. For instance, 'If the temperature of water increases, then more sugar will dissolve.' You will then design a fair test by changing only one independent variable while keeping all other control variables the same.
Accurate measurement and observation are essential. You will record your dependent variable – the factor you measure – in a results table and plot graphs to spot patterns. Finally, you will evaluate whether your data supports the hypothesis and suggest improvements. These skills build the foundation for all future practical work.
4. The Particle Model of Matter |
Everything around you is made of tiny particles. In a solid, these particles are packed closely together in a regular arrangement, and they can only vibrate on the spot. This explains why solids have a fixed shape and cannot be poured. In a liquid, the particles are still close but can slide past one another, which allows liquids to flow and take the shape of their container.
Gas particles are far apart and move randomly at high speed. They collide with each other and with the walls of the container, creating pressure. Because there is a lot of space between them, gases can be compressed easily. You will use this model throughout your chemistry course to explain melting, boiling, condensing and diffusion.
5. Solids, Liquids and Gases |
Let us compare the three states of matter in more detail. The table below summarises their properties based on the particle model.
| Property | Solid | Liquid | Gas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shape | Fixed | Takes shape of container | Fills whole container |
| Volume | Fixed | Fixed | Can be compressed |
| Particle arrangement | Regular, closely packed | Random, close together | Random, far apart |
| Particle movement | Vibrate in fixed positions | Slide past each other | Move quickly in all directions |
When a solid is heated, its particles gain energy and vibrate more vigorously. At the melting point, the regular arrangement breaks down and the solid turns into a liquid. Further heating gives particles enough energy to overcome the attractions completely; boiling then changes the liquid into a gas. The reverse processes – condensing and freezing – happen when a gas is cooled or a liquid loses heat energy.
6. Mixtures and Separation Techniques |
A pure substance consists of only one type of particle, while a mixture contains two or more substances that are not chemically joined. Sea water, for example, is a mixture of water, salt and other dissolved minerals. Because the components of a mixture keep their own properties, you can separate them using physical techniques.
Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid, such as sand from water. The mixture is poured through filter paper; the solid residue stays on the paper while the filtrate passes through. Evaporation can then be used to obtain a dissolved solid from a solution – when the liquid evaporates, the solid crystals are left behind. Distillation goes a step further by boiling the liquid and condensing the vapour, allowing you to collect both the liquid and any dissolved solids separately.
Chromatography is a technique to separate mixtures of coloured substances, such as the dyes in ink. A spot of the mixture is placed on chromatography paper and placed in a solvent. As the solvent travels up, it carries the dyes at different speeds, separating them into a pattern of spots.
7. Introduction to Acids and Alkalis |
Acids and alkalis are chemical opposites that you encounter in everyday life. Vinegar contains ethanoic acid, lemons contain citric acid, and your stomach produces hydrochloric acid to digest food. Alkalis feel soapy and are found in cleaning products such as oven cleaners and toothpaste. In the laboratory, you must handle both with care.
Indicators help you identify whether a substance is acidic or alkaline. Litmus paper turns red in acids and blue in alkalis. Universal indicator gives a full range of colours that can be matched to the pH scale, which runs from 0 to 14. A pH lower than 7 indicates an acid, pH 7 is neutral, and pH greater than 7 indicates an alkali. Strong acids have very low pH values, while strong alkalis have very high pH values.
When an acid and an alkali are mixed, a neutralisation reaction occurs. The products are always a salt and water. For example, hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium chloride (common salt) and water:
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
8. Chemical Reactions – First Steps |
A chemical reaction is a process in which new substances are formed. This is different from a physical change, where no new substance appears. Melting ice is a physical change because the water molecules are unchanged; burning a piece of magnesium ribbon is a chemical change because a new substance, magnesium oxide, is produced.
You can often tell a chemical reaction is happening by looking for evidence. Bubbles of gas appearing, a colour change, a temperature rise or fall, or the formation of a solid precipitate all point to a reaction. In Year 7, you will write simple word equations to represent these changes. The word equation for burning magnesium is:
magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide
Later, you will progress to symbol equations that use chemical formulas. For instance, when methane burns, it reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O. Recognising the patterns in chemical reactions is a key skill to develop early.
9. Elements, Compounds and the Periodic Table |
An element is a substance made of only one type of atom. There are about 118 known elements, each with its own symbol – often one or two letters, such as H for hydrogen, O for oxygen, and Fe for iron. When atoms of different elements join together chemically, they form compounds. Water (H₂O) is a compound made from hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is another familiar compound.
The Periodic Table is a chart that organises all the elements in order of increasing atomic number. In Year 7, you will be introduced to its basic layout: metals on the left, non-metals on the right. You do not need to memorise everything yet, but knowing the first 20 elements and their symbols will give you a head start. For instance, Na (sodium) and Cl (chlorine) combine to make sodium chloride, the chemical name for table salt.
10. Summer Learning Resources and Tips |
Preparing over the summer does not mean reading a textbook from cover to cover. Instead, try to explore chemistry in the world around you. Watch short animations on the particle model on platforms like BBC Bitesize or PhET Interactive Simulations. Observe what happens when you mix baking soda and vinegar at home (with supervision) – you will see a vigorous fizzing as carbon dioxide gas is produced.
Keep a simple science journal. Write down a question you are curious about, sketch a diagram, or note an observation from a nature walk. Learning to record clearly is a skill you will use constantly in Year 7. You can also practise using common units such as degrees Celsius (°C), grams (g), and cubic centimetres (cm³) so you feel comfortable with practical measurements.
Finally, discuss your learning with family members. Explaining why a water droplet stays rounded on a waxy leaf, or how a puddle disappears on a sunny day, strengthens your understanding of the particle model. Entering the classroom with curiosity and a few key ideas already in mind will make your first term of Chemistry exciting and rewarding.
