📚 Chemistry: The Science of Matter and Change |
Chemistry is one of the pillars of the natural sciences. It focuses on the composition, properties, structure and transformation of matter, and on the interactions between different substances. It reaches into every corner of daily life - from the food on the dinner table to the medicines that cure disease, from the birth of new materials to the way we use energy, and even behind the environmental changes we observe around us, chemistry is quietly at work.
1. What Is Chemistry? |
Chemistry is often called the central science because it sits between physics and biology and connects them. Physics explains the laws that govern particles and energy; biology describes living systems; chemistry explains the matter those systems are made of and the reactions that keep them running. Its scale of study runs from single atoms around 10⁻¹⁰ m across to industrial reactors holding thousands of tonnes of material.
2. Chemistry in Everyday Life | 日常生活中的化学
Every meal, every medicine and every manufactured object is the product of chemical knowledge. Cooking is a sequence of controlled reactions: proteins denature, sugars caramelise, and the Maillard reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars creates the brown colour and savoury aroma of roasted food. Soaps, detergents, fertilisers, plastics, batteries and fuels all depend on the same underlying principles studied in a school laboratory.
3. Atoms: The Building Blocks of Matter |
To enter chemistry you must first grasp a few cornerstone concepts: atoms, elements and compounds. An atom is the smallest unit that still retains the identity of an element. It consists of a tiny, dense nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons arranged in shells. Almost all of the mass sits in the nucleus, while almost all of the volume is empty space occupied by the electron cloud.
The number of protons defines the element, while the arrangement of electrons, especially the outermost ones, defines how that element behaves.
Atomic number Z = number of protons = number of electrons (in a neutral atom)
4. Elements and the Periodic Table |
When atoms of the same type gather, they form an element - such as the oxygen, hydrogen and carbon we all know. There are about 118 confirmed elements, and roughly 94 occur naturally on Earth. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons, so they share chemical behaviour but differ in mass; this is why carbon-12 and carbon-14 behave almost identically in reactions yet only the latter is radioactive.
The periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Elements in the same group (vertical column) share the number of outer-shell electrons and therefore show similar reactivity, which is why Group 1 metals all react vigorously with water and Group 17 halogens all form salts with metals.
5. Compounds and Chemical Bonds |
A compound is different from an element: it is formed when atoms of different elements are joined by chemical bonds. Water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) are typical examples, as is sodium chloride (NaCl). Compounds have fixed composition by mass and properties quite unlike those of their constituent elements - sodium is a reactive metal and chlorine a toxic gas, yet together they form harmless table salt.
| Ionic 离子键 | Electron transfer from metal to non-metal | 电子由金属转移给非金属 | NaCl, MgO |
| Covalent 共价键 | Sharing of electron pairs | 共用电子对 | H₂O, CO₂, CH₄ |
| Metallic 金属键 | Delocalised electrons in a lattice | 晶格中的离域电子 | Cu, Fe, Al |
6. Why Substances Show Their Properties |
Chemistry also insists on asking why a substance has particular properties and how it can change. Colour, hardness, density, melting point and conductivity ultimately arise from the way molecules and atoms are arranged and from the strength of the forces holding them together. Diamond and graphite are both pure carbon, yet diamond is the hardest natural substance and graphite is soft enough to write with - the difference lies entirely in structure, not composition.
Structure determines properties, and properties determine use. This single sentence explains why chemists spend so much effort on crystallography, spectroscopy and modelling.
7. Chemical Reactions: Bonds Break and Form |
When matter undergoes a chemical reaction, old bonds break and new bonds form, and the atoms are rearranged into new substances. Mass is conserved: the number of atoms of each element before and after the reaction is identical, which is why equations must be balanced. In the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, four hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms appear on both sides.
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
Reactions fall into recognisable families: combination, decomposition, displacement, precipitation, neutralisation and redox. Some are reversible and reach equilibrium, written with the ⇌ symbol, such as the Haber process for ammonia:
N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g) ΔH = -92 kJ mol⁻¹
8. Energy Changes in Reactions |
Chemical change is almost always accompanied by the absorption or release of energy, and this is the essence behind the change. If the energy needed to break the old bonds is greater than the energy released when new bonds form, the reaction is endothermic and the surroundings cool down. If the reverse is true, the reaction is exothermic and heat is released.
ΔH = Σ(bond energies broken) − Σ(bond energies formed)
Even an exothermic reaction needs an initial input of energy, called the activation energy, to get started; a catalyst lowers this barrier without being consumed, which is why enzymes and industrial catalysts matter so much.
9. Applications: Food, Medicine and Materials |
The applications of chemistry are extremely broad. In the food industry, chemical principles are used to optimise flavour, extend shelf life and improve nutrition, from preservatives and antioxidants to vitamin fortification and low-fat reformulation. Pharmaceutical research is inseparable from chemistry: drugs are designed, synthesised and tested at the molecular level to tackle disease and protect human health.
Materials science uses chemistry to create lighter, stronger and more sustainable materials, such as modern plastics, high-performance fibres, composites and alloys, while lithium-ion chemistry powers the batteries in phones and electric vehicles. Chemistry is also central to protecting the environment and transforming energy supply.
10. Chemistry, Environment and Energy |
Chemistry offers concrete solutions to pollution and to the transition towards clean energy. Catalytic converters turn toxic exhaust gases into nitrogen, water vapour and carbon dioxide; scrubbers remove sulfur dioxide from flue gas; and membrane chemistry makes desalination practical. In energy, chemistry underpins solar cells, fuel cells, hydrogen storage and next-generation batteries.
Green chemistry goes further by designing processes that use less energy, generate less waste and rely on safer solvents and renewable feedstocks.
11. Methods of Investigation |
The methods used to uncover chemical laws are not singular. Laboratory experiment is the traditional foundation: scientists observe and measure precisely - titrating to a 0.05 cm³, weighing to 0.001 g - to reveal the secrets of how matter behaves. Reproducibility, controlled variables and honest error analysis remain the gold standard of chemical evidence.
Computational simulation brings a new iteration: computer models based on quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics predict the properties and reactivity of substances, greatly raising research efficiency and guiding which experiments are worth running. Data analysis runs throughout, organising and interpreting the vast information produced by experiment or simulation and distilling it into convincing scientific conclusions - the same logic behind spectroscopic identification and machine-learning prediction of reaction yields.
12. Chemistry and the Progress of Society |
Chemistry drives human society forward. It not only continuously delivers new substances and new materials but also helps us peer into the mysteries of the natural world and of life itself - the double helix, the genetic code and the machinery of metabolism are all, at heart, chemistry. As research deepens, we become better equipped to tackle food safety, healthcare, environmental protection and energy crisis, injecting strong momentum into sustainable development.
Ultimately, chemistry is both a foundational and a frontier discipline. It explains the composition and change of the material world and exerts a profound influence across an extraordinarily wide range of fields. Through deepening exploration and practice, chemistry has left an indelible mark on human progress.
