Welcome to this comprehensive revision guide covering the core knowledge needed for Year 7 SQA Art. In Scotland, this year often corresponds to the early stage of secondary school (S1), where the focus is on building a strong foundation in visual elements, design principles and practical skills. This article explains the key concepts, from colour theory to art analysis, so that you can confidently apply them with confidence in your coursework and assessments.
1. What Year 7 SQA Art Covers | Year 7 SQA
Year 7 Art is not a list of facts to memorise; it is a practical course built on three connected strands: expressive work, design work and critical studies. Each strand asks you to investigate, develop and resolve an idea rather than simply produce a finished picture.
Expressive work explores feelings, memory, imagination and personal response. Design work solves a visual problem for a purpose, such as a poster, a logo or a ceramic vessel. Critical studies build the vocabulary you need to describe, analyse and evaluate your own work and the work of artists and designers.
Assessment is continuous and portfolio-based. Your sketchbook, development sheets and final outcomes all carry weight, together with your ability to explain, in speech and in writing, why you made each decision.
2. The Visual Elements |
The visual elements are the basic building blocks of art, including line, shape, form, space, colour, value and texture. Artists use these elements to communicate ideas, emotions and meaning in their work.
| Element 元素 | What it does 作用 | Key words 关键词汇 |
| Form 形体 | Shows volume, mass and three dimensions 表现体积、体量与三维感 | volume, sphere, cube 体积、球体、立方体 |
| Value 明度 | Creates light, shadow and the illusion of form 制造光影与形体错觉 | tone, highlight, shadow 调子、高光、阴影 |
A reliable exam habit is to name three elements, then explain the effect each one creates. "The artist uses strong diagonal lines to push the viewer's eye towards the figure" is far stronger than "the artist uses lines".
3. Line, Shape and Form |
Line is the most direct element. Contour lines trace the outside edge of a subject, gesture lines capture movement in a few seconds, and hatching or cross-hatching builds tone from parallel strokes. Implied lines, such as a row of trees or a pointing arm, guide the eye without being drawn as a single stroke.
Shape is two-dimensional and can be geometric or organic; form is three-dimensional and has volume. Value describes lightness and darkness, helping to create the illusion of form on a flat surface through shading and highlights.
Most complex objects can be simplified into the four basic forms: the sphere, the cube, the cylinder and the cone. If you can shade these convincingly, you can shade almost anything, because a head is a sphere on a cylinder and a still-life bottle is a cylinder with a cone on top.
4. Space: Positive, Negative and Perspective |
Space refers to the area within, around or between objects. Positive space is the subject, while negative space is the background. Training yourself to draw the negative space - the shapes between chair legs, for example - is one of the fastest ways to improve accuracy.
Depth on a flat surface is created by overlapping shapes, changing scale, placing objects higher or lower on the page, adding detail in the foreground and reducing contrast in the distance. This last effect is called atmospheric perspective.
Linear perspective is a set of rules for drawing recession accurately. All lines that recede towards the distance meet at a vanishing point on the horizon line.
One-point perspective: 1 vanishing point | Two-point perspective: 2 vanishing points | Eye level = horizon line
5. Value and Texture |
Value is the lightness or darkness of a tone, and it does more to make a drawing look real than colour does. A useful tonal scale runs from 1 (the darkest pencil mark you can make) to 10 (the white of the paper), giving you ten steps to match.
When you shade a form, look for four separate zones: the highlight where light hits directly, the mid-tone, the core shadow on the turning edge, and the reflected light bouncing back from the surface beneath. Adding a cast shadow anchors the object to the ground.
Texture can be actual (tactile) or implied, and it adds richness and sensory interest to an artwork. Thick impasto paint, rough handmade paper and scratched sgraffito are tactile; stippling, cross-hatching and printed patterns are implied.
6. Colour Theory |
Primary colours cannot be mixed from any others. In paint they are red, yellow and blue; mixing two primaries produces a secondary colour (orange, green and violet), and mixing a primary with a neighbouring secondary produces a tertiary colour such as blue-green or red-orange.
Hue is the name of a colour, value is how light or dark it is, and saturation (or intensity) is how pure or grey it looks. Adding white makes a tint, adding black makes a shade, and adding grey makes a tone.
Complementary colours sit 180° apart on the colour wheel | Triadic colours sit 120° apart | The full wheel = 360°
| Complementary 互补色 | Opposites on the wheel 色环上相对 | Maximum contrast, vibration 强对比、视觉跳动 |
| Analogous 邻近色 | Neighbours on the wheel 色环上相邻 | Calm, harmonious 平静、和谐 |
| Triadic 三色组 | Three colours, 120° apart 三色各隔 120° | Balanced but lively 均衡而有活力 |
| Warm and cool 冷暖 | Reds and yellows against blues and greens 红黄对蓝绿 | Depth and temperature 空间与温度感 |
Warm colours appear to advance and cool colours to recede, which is why a landscape painter puts warm ochres in the foreground and cool blue-greys in the hills behind. Remember too that colours change depending on what sits beside them - a grey looks warm next to blue and cool next to orange.
7. Design Principles and Composition |
The design principles describe how the visual elements are arranged: balance, rhythm, repetition, contrast, scale, proportion, unity, emphasis and movement. A successful composition uses several of them together, while a weak one usually relies on only one.
Balance may be symmetrical (mirror image), asymmetrical (different weights that still feel stable) or radial (elements spreading from a centre point). Rhythm comes from repeated shapes, colours or lines, and contrast comes from placing opposites together, such as rough against smooth or dark against light.
Two composition tools are worth memorising. The rule of thirds divides the picture into a 3 x 3 grid and places key features on the lines or intersections. The golden ratio, approximately 1 : 1.618, produces naturally pleasing proportions and appears in architecture, logos and classical painting.
Before starting a final piece, always produce at least three thumbnail sketches. Each thumbnail takes two minutes and can save you an hour of correcting a badly planned final outcome.
8. Drawing, Mark-Making and Media |
Media in Year 7 Art usually include graphite pencil, charcoal, oil and soft pastel, ink, watercolour, acrylic, printmaking, clay and digital drawing. Each medium has its own character, and part of your job is to choose the one that suits your intention rather than the one that is easiest.
Mark-making is the vocabulary of drawing. Hatching uses parallel lines, cross-hatching layers them, stippling builds tone from dots, scumbling drags a dry brush over a surface, and blending softens edges. Varying pressure, speed and direction changes the mood of a mark from aggressive to delicate.
For observational drawing, work from the whole to the part. Use your pencil as a measuring stick with your arm straight and one eye closed, compare every new line to a line you have already drawn, and check your work in a mirror or upside down to reveal errors in proportion.
9. The Design Process |
Design work follows a cycle: brief, research, development, refinement, final outcome and evaluation. The brief tells you the purpose, audience and constraints; research gathers images, artists and information; development tests ideas quickly and cheaply.
Refinement is where you narrow your options and justify your choices. A common mistake is to jump straight from research to a final piece, which leaves the assessor no evidence of thinking. Even a page of crossed-out experiments earns marks because it shows you tested and rejected solutions.
Annotation is part of the artwork, not an extra. Write short notes that answer three questions: what did I try, why did I try it, and what will I do next? Evaluative language such as "this worked because..." scores higher than descriptive language such as "this is my drawing of...".
10. Expressive and Analytical Work | 表现性与分析性作品
