📚 Photography: Capturing Light, Time and Meaning |
Photography is more than a technical act; it is a way of seeing. This guide explains how a camera records light, how the craft developed from the early nineteenth century to the smartphone era, and why composition, light and editing matter just as much as the equipment in your bag. Whether you are an A-Level student studying Art and Design, Physics or Media Studies, or simply someone who wants to take better pictures, the principles below work on every camera and every subject.
1. What Is Photography? |
Photography is the art and practice of capturing images with a camera in order to record the world and to express ideas. The word itself is Greek in origin and literally means "drawing with light". Taking a photograph may look like a single click, but in reality it is a chain of decisions: what to include, where to stand, how to expose the frame, and when exactly to press the button. Photographers control light, angle and composition to produce images in many different styles, and through those images they pass on a message and a feeling.
photography = phōs (light) + graphē (drawing) → "drawing with light"
A photograph is therefore never neutral. It always shows the world from somebody's point of view. Two photographers standing side by side in the same street will walk away with completely different pictures, because each one chooses a different subject, a different moment and a different mood. That personal choice is what turns a record into an expression.
2. A Short History of Photography |
The history of photography begins in the early nineteenth century, when cameras were crude wooden boxes and a single exposure could take minutes. In 1826 or 1827 Nicéphore Niépce produced one of the earliest surviving photographs, and in 1839 Louis Daguerre announced the daguerreotype, the first practical photographic process. Early portraits required the sitter to stay completely still, often supported by a metal head rest, because any movement during the long exposure would blur the image.
Improvements followed quickly: the wet collodion process, the dry plate, flexible roll film, and in 1888 Kodak's famous promise that the customer only had to "press the button" while the company did "the rest". The 35 mm Leica of 1925 made the camera portable, and the twentieth century added colour film, instant prints and finally digital sensors. Today, technology has made photography faster, cheaper and far more accessible: whether you use a smartphone or a professional camera, anyone can produce high-quality images and share them with the world through social media within seconds.

3. How a Camera Works: Light, Lens and Sensor |
Every camera, from a phone to a medium-format body, does the same basic job: it gathers light and focuses it onto a light-sensitive surface. Light reflected from the subject passes through the lens, which bends the rays so that they converge at the focal plane, where the film or digital sensor sits. The aperture controls how much light passes through, the shutter controls how long the light is allowed in, and the sensor converts the resulting photons into electrical signals that are written as an image file.
The thin-lens equation describes the relationship between focal length and focus distance, and it explains why focusing moves glass elements rather than the sensor itself:
1 ÷ f = 1 ÷ u + 1 ÷ v
Here f is the focal length, u is the distance from the lens to the subject, and v is the distance from the lens to the image. Focal length also determines the angle of view: a 24 mm lens takes in a wide scene, a 50 mm lens matches human perspective reasonably well, and a 200 mm telephoto compresses distant subjects and makes them appear larger.
4. The Exposure Triangle: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO |
Exposure is controlled by three settings that trade off against one another - the so-called exposure triangle. Aperture is written as an f-number such as f/2.8 or f/16; a smaller f-number means a larger physical opening, more light, and a shallower depth of field. Shutter speed is the length of time the sensor is exposed, from 1 ÷ 4000 s for freezing fast action to 30 s for night skies. ISO is the sensitivity setting: low values such as ISO 100 give the cleanest image, while ISO 3200 and above brighten the picture at the cost of visible noise.
Exposure value links the two mechanical settings together, and the Sunny 16 rule gives a reliable starting point outdoors:
EV = log₂(N² ÷ t)
Sunny 16: in bright sun, use f/16 and shutter ≈ 1 ÷ ISO
In these expressions N is the f-number and t is the shutter time in seconds. If you open the aperture by one stop (for example f/8 instead of f/11), you must halve the shutter time to keep the same brightness. Understanding this trade-off is the single most useful technical skill in photography, because every creative decision - blurring a background, freezing a dancer, shooting handheld at dusk - depends on it.
| Aperture f-number | 光圈 f 值 | More light, shallow depth of field | 进光多,景深浅 | Less light, deep depth of field | 进光少,景深大 |
5. Genres of Photography |
Photography can be divided into many genres and styles, each with its own techniques and traditions. Portrait photography puts a person at the centre of the frame and tries to capture character and emotion. Landscape photography focuses on natural or urban scenery, showing scale, colour and atmosphere. Beyond these two, there are wildlife, still life, architecture, street, documentary, fashion, sports, macro, aerial and astrophotography, and most photographers eventually specialise in one or two of them.
An important exam-style point is that each genre has its own specific challenges, and the photographer must choose techniques and equipment that suit the scene. A wedding photographer needs quiet, discreet lenses and reliable autofocus; a wildlife photographer needs long telephoto reach and very high shutter speeds; a product photographer needs controlled studio lighting and precise focus. Choosing the right tool for the brief is itself a professional skill.
| Still life | 静物 | Light shaping, styling | 布光、摆布与造型 | Studio lights, macro lens | 影棚灯、微距镜头 |
6. Portrait Photography: Capturing Character |
A good portrait is not simply a picture of a face; it is a picture of a person. The photographer's job is to make the sitter comfortable enough to reveal something real, then to catch that instant. Focal length matters: 85 mm and 135 mm lenses flatter the face because they compress features slightly, while a 24 mm lens close to the face will exaggerate the nose and distort the proportions.
Light is what separates a competent portrait from a memorable one. Classic portrait lighting uses a key light as the main source, a fill light to soften shadows, and sometimes a rim light to separate the subject from the background. Rembrandt lighting, named after the painter, places the key light at roughly 45° to the side and slightly above eye level, leaving a small triangle of light on the shadowed cheek. A catchlight - the tiny reflection of the light source in the eye - makes the subject look alive.
Aperture choice also carries meaning. Shooting at f/1.8 or f/2.0 isolates the subject against a soft background, which suits a moody character study; shooting at f/8 keeps enough of an environment sharp to tell a story about the sitter's work or home. Environmental portraits deliberately include context, while headshots remove everything but the face and its expression.
7. Landscape and Cityscape Photography |
Landscape photography depends on patience more than on equipment. The best light usually arrives in the golden hour just after sunrise and before sunset, when the sun is low and the light is warm and directional, or in the blue hour after sunset, when the sky turns deep blue and city lights balance with ambient brightness. Midday sun is harsh and flat, which is why so many landscape photographers start walking before dawn.
Technically, landscape work favours small apertures of about f/8 to f/11 for corner-to-corner sharpness, a sturdy tripod, and often a neutral density filter to lengthen exposure times so that water or clouds become silky and smooth. The hyperfocal distance tells you where to focus so that everything from a chosen near point to infinity is acceptably sharp:
H = f ² ÷ (N × c) + f
In this formula f is focal length, N is the f-number and c is the acceptable circle of confusion (often about 0.03 mm for full-frame cameras). Cityscape work adds a second challenge: mixed light sources with different colour temperatures, deep shadows between buildings, and enormous dynamic range between lit windows and dark streets. A tripod, a low ISO and manual exposure usually solve these problems better than any automatic mode.
