1. Force and Motion |
A very common belief is that a moving object needs a continuous push or pull to keep going, and that it will stop on its own as soon as the force is removed. Many students picture a toy car that slows down when you stop pushing it, and they conclude that a constant force is required for constant motion.
In fact, objects do not need a force to keep moving. The correct idea comes from Newton's First Law: an object will stay at rest or move at a constant speed in a straight line unless a net force acts on it. The toy car slows down because friction and air resistance act on it, not because it 'runs out' of force. In space, far from friction, a moving spacecraft would keep gliding forever without any engine.
So when you see something moving at a steady speed, it does not mean a forward force is bigger than a backward force – it means the forces are balanced and there is no net force changing its motion.
2. Plant Respiration |
Many pupils learn that plants produce oxygen during the day using photosynthesis, and then imagine that respiration only happens in animals, or that plants only respire at night. This leads to the mistaken idea that plants 'breathe out' oxygen during the day and carbon dioxide at night.
In reality, plants carry out respiration all the time, both day and night. Respiration is the process that releases energy from glucose for the plant's cells to use. During daylight, photosynthesis often produces more oxygen than the plant uses in respiration, so the overall effect is oxygen being 'released'. At night, photosynthesis stops, but respiration continues, so we observe net carbon dioxide release. The plant is always respiring; it never switches to a 'breathing mode' just because it is dark.
3. Mass vs Weight |
In everyday language, people use 'mass' and 'weight' to mean the same thing. Students often think that weighing scales measure how much matter they contain, and that their weight stays the same no matter where they are. This mix-up becomes a real obstacle when discussing gravity and space.
Mass is the amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms. It does not change whether you are on Earth, the Moon or floating in space. Weight is the force of gravity pulling on that mass, measured in newtons. On the Moon, your mass is the same but your weight is about one-sixth of your weight on Earth because the Moon's gravity is weaker. A set of standard kitchen scales would still show the same kilogram reading on the Moon, but a spring balance would give a much smaller reading.
4. Current in a Circuit |
When a simple circuit is built with a battery and two bulbs in series, many students expect the first bulb to be brighter because 'the current gets used up' going through it. They imagine current like a liquid being drunk by the first bulb, so less is left for the second one.
In a series circuit, the current is the same everywhere. The current is a flow of electric charge, and charge cannot be created or destroyed in the circuit. The bulbs glow with equal brightness (if they are identical) because the same number of charges pass through each bulb per second. Energy is transferred from the battery to the bulbs, not 'current'. The brightness depends on the energy given out, not on some current being lost.
To think about it correctly, use the idea that the battery provides energy and the bulbs convert it into heat and light. The current simply carries the energy around the loop; it is not a substance that gets consumed.
5. Boiling and Evaporation |
Because both boiling and evaporation turn liquid into gas, students often think they are the same process, just at different speeds. Some say evaporation is 'slow boiling' that happens at any temperature, while boiling is 'fast evaporation' at one specific temperature.
Evaporation and boiling are fundamentally different. Evaporation happens only at the surface of a liquid. The fastest-moving particles escape from the surface, so the remaining liquid cools down. It can occur at any temperature below the boiling point. Boiling, on the other hand, takes place throughout the liquid – bubbles of vapour form inside the liquid and rise to the surface. It happens at a specific temperature called the boiling point. A puddle drying up on a cool day is evaporation, not slow boiling.
Understanding this distinction helps explain why we feel cold when we step out of a swimming pool even on a warm day: the water evaporating from our skin takes energy away.
6. The Cause of Seasons |
A widely held belief is that summer happens when the Earth is closer to the Sun and winter when it is farther away. The mental picture is an oval orbit with the Sun at one end, so distance controls temperature. This idea seems logical because moving closer to a fire does make you warmer.
In reality, the Earth's orbit is nearly circular, and the distance to the Sun changes only slightly – not enough to cause four seasons. The true reason is the tilt of the Earth's axis. When the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, sunlight hits the surface more directly and days are longer; we experience summer. At the same time the southern hemisphere is tilted away, getting less direct sunlight and shorter days, having winter. Six months later the tilt reverses. So seasons are caused by the angle of sunlight, not by distance.
7. Digestion and Energy |
A common simplification that turns into a misconception is that 'food provides energy, so digestion releases the energy from food'. Some students think the stomach breaks food into pieces and energy pours out, ready to be used. They imagine digestion is the step that lets us run and play.
Digestion is the process of breaking large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble ones that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. It does not release energy directly. The absorbed molecules, such as glucose, are carried to the body's cells. Inside the cells, respiration takes place – a chemical reaction that uses oxygen to release energy from glucose. Most absorption happens in the small intestine, not the stomach. The stomach mainly churns and begins protein digestion with acid and enzymes.
So when you eat, your body is essentially preparing fuel for respiration; the actual energy release happens silently inside every living cell.
8. Physical and Chemical Changes |
When ice melts into water, some learners believe a new substance has been made because it looks different. They might label melting, boiling or dissolving as chemical changes, simply because the material appears to have changed its identity.
A physical change is one where no new substances are formed. Changes of state (melting, freezing, boiling, condensing) and dissolving are physical changes because the chemical composition stays the same. Water molecules are still H2O whether they are solid, liquid or gas. A chemical change produces one or more new substances with different properties. Signs include a colour change, a gas given off, a temperature change or a precipitate forming. Frying an egg, burning wood and rusting iron are chemical changes because you cannot easily get the original substances back.
9. The Earth, Sun and Moon |
From our everyday perspective, the Sun appears to move across the sky, and the Moon only comes out at night. Many young learners conclude that the Sun orbits the Earth, and that the Moon is invisible during the day. Some also think the Moon produces its own light.
The Sun is the centre of our solar system; the Earth and other planets orbit it. The apparent daily motion of the Sun is caused by the Earth rotating on its own axis. The Moon orbits the Earth approximately every 28 days. We can often see the Moon during daytime – it is just less noticeable against the bright sky. The Moon does not make its own light; we see it because sunlight reflects off its surface. The phases of the Moon are caused by the changing positions of the Earth, Moon and Sun, which alter how much of the illuminated half we can see.
10. Floating and Sinking |
A quick assumption is that heavy objects sink and light objects float. A metal block dropped in water sinks, while a leaf floats, so it seems obvious that weight decides everything. This leads to confusion when a huge ship made of steel sails on the sea without sinking.
Whether an object floats or sinks depends on its density, not just its weight. Density is the mass per unit volume. An object floats if its overall density is less than the density of water (about 1 g/cm3). A steel ship is full of air inside its hull, so its average density is much lower than solid steel. The ship displaces a weight of water equal to its own weight, producing an upthrust that supports it. A tiny piece of solid steel sinks because its density is high – the same material can float or sink depending on its shape and how much air it contains.
11. Energy and Food Chains |
Many students think that energy cycles around a food chain, so the same energy goes from the Sun to plants, then to animals, and eventually returns to the Sun. They treat energy as if it were matter that gets recycled over and over.
Energy does not cycle in an ecosystem; matter cycles, but energy flows in one direction and is gradually lost to the surroundings as heat. Plants capture only a small fraction of the Sun's light energy through photosynthesis. Herbivores eat the plants and use some of the chemical energy for growth and movement, but a great deal is lost as heat through respiration. At each trophic level, less energy remains available for the next level. This is why food chains are usually short and why there are far fewer top predators than producers.
12. Air and Gases |
A surprisingly persistent idea is that air is just emptiness or a single pure gas. Some students think air is the same as oxygen, and that carbon dioxide is only produced in factories and car exhausts, not by living things.
Air is a mixture of gases: about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and small amounts of argon, carbon dioxide and water vapour. It is not empty space – air has mass and takes up space, which is why a deflated balloon prevents a pump handle from moving when the nozzle is blocked. Oxygen is the part we use for respiration, but it is not the only gas present. Carbon dioxide is indeed emitted by industry, but it is also a natural product of respiration in all plants, animals and decomposers. The balance of these gases in the atmosphere is maintained by photosynthesis and respiration.
