📚 Case Study in Action: Analysing 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' |
Welcome to your first CCEA Year 7 case study practical exercise! In this session, you will step into the role of a musical detective. Your mission is to analyse a famous orchestral piece, Edvard Grieg's 'In the Hall of the Mountain King'. By breaking down its musical elements, you will learn how to listen critically and describe what you hear. This is an essential skill for your music assessments, where you are asked to comment on how composers use tempo, dynamics, instruments, texture and structure to create effects. Get ready to put your theory into practice!
1. Welcome to the Case Study |
In this case study, we will examine a short orchestral work that tells a vivid story through music alone. Your job is to listen carefully, identify key features, and explain how Grieg creates a sense of growing excitement and terror. You can think of this as a 'listen and respond' activity – just like the ones you might encounter in your classroom or in an assessment.
2. Setting the Scene: The Story Behind the Music |
Before we dive into the sounds, let's understand the story. 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' is part of Grieg's incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play 'Peer Gynt'. In the scene, Peer Gynt finds himself in the underground kingdom of the troll Mountain King. At first, the cavern is quiet and mysterious, but as Peer tries to escape, the trolls chase him. The music reflects this frantic pursuit: it begins softly and slowly, then builds relentlessly in speed and volume until the final crash.
3. Meet Your Toolkit: The Musical Elements |
To analyse any piece of music, you need a vocabulary. Here are the key elements we will use today: tempo (speed), dynamics (volume), instruments and timbre (the unique sound quality), texture (how many layers of sound are present and how they interact), structure (the form of the piece), and melody and harmony. Keep these in mind as you listen.
4. First Listening: The Big Picture |
Listen to the piece from start to finish without interruption. What do you notice? The music starts with very quiet, plucked string notes and a deep, sneaky melody played by bassoons and cellos. As the piece progresses, the same short tune repeats over and over, but each time it sounds louder, faster and more instruments join in. By the end, the full orchestra is thundering away, with crashing cymbals and a sudden stop. This overall shape – from very soft to very loud – is called a grand crescendo, and it is the main feature of this work.
