📚 Year 7 CCEA Art: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answer | 七年级CCEA艺术:论文写作框架与范文
Writing about art might seem tricky at first, but with a clear structure you can turn your observations into a confident, well-evidenced essay. In CCEA Year 7 Art you are often asked to analyse an artwork, express your thoughts and back them up with evidence from the piece itself. This guide gives you a step-by-step writing framework, a vocabulary bank, a fully annotated model answer and a self-check list, so that you know exactly what to do from the first sentence to the last.
1. Understanding the Art Essay |
An art essay is not a diary entry and it is not a vote. It is a structured piece of writing in which you describe what you can see, analyse how the artwork has been made, interpret what it might mean and judge how well it works. Liking or disliking a painting can be your starting point, but it can never be the whole argument, because a reader cannot check a feeling the way they can check a fact.
In Year 7 Art, essays are usually short: around 200-300 words, focused on one artwork studied in class. The CCEA Key Stage 3 Art and Design programme is assessed by your teacher rather than by an external written exam, so your classwork, sketchbook annotations and written responses all build the evidence your teacher uses. That is good news. The skills you practise in a 250-word essay are exactly the same skills you use in sketchbook notes and end-of-topic assessments.
Three habits separate a strong answer from a weak one: look longer, use precise vocabulary, and link every opinion to something visible in the artwork. The framework below is built on those three habits.
2. The Feldman Model: A Simple Framework |
Many schools, including those following CCEA guidance, teach the four-step model of art criticism developed by the American art educator Edmund Burke Feldman: Description, Analysis, Interpretation and Judgment. Some teachers rename the steps Describe, Analyse, Interpret, Evaluate - the meaning is identical. Think of it as a recipe: follow the steps in order and you will build a complete, and balanced essay.
| Step | What it means | Key questions |
|---|---|---|
| Description | List the facts - what can you actually see? No opinions yet. | What objects, colours, shapes and people are shown? What medium, size and date? |
| Analysis | Examine how the artwork is put together - the elements and principles of art. | Where is the focal point? What is repeated, what is contrasted? How does each choice affect the viewer? |
| Interpretation | Explain what the work might mean, feel or communicate. | What mood or idea is created? Which details support that reading? What was the artist's context? |
| Judgment | Evaluate how successfully the work achieves its aims. | Does it work? Which criteria support your view? What is its weakest point? |
The order matters because each step earns the right to the next one. You cannot analyse a composition you have not described, and you cannot judge a painting you have not interpreted. Follow the sequence and the essay almost writes itself; skip a step and the gap shows immediately.
3. Step 1 - Description: Starting with the Facts |
Description is fact-only. Imagine you are describing the artwork over the phone to someone who has never seen it: no opinions, no "beautiful", no "I like". Write down what is genuinely there, and nothing more.
- Subject matter and genre: what is shown - a portrait, a still life, a landscape, an abstract arrangement? |
- Medium and support:
