1. Why Engineering Essays Matter |
Engineering is not only about making things; it is about explaining why and how you made them. Your written report helps the examiner see your thinking process, from initial ideas to final testing. In WJEC assessments, the written component often carries a significant percentage of the total marks. By mastering a clear framework, you can show evidence of research, design development, practical skills and critical evaluation.
2. The Standard Report Structure |
Most Year 7 engineering reports follow a logical sequence: Title Page, Introduction, Research, Design Ideas, Making, Testing, Evaluation, and Conclusion. Think of this as a story that takes the reader on a journey from a problem to a solution. Each section builds upon the previous one, and skipping a part can make your report feel incomplete. Use headings and subheadings to make your document easy to navigate.
3. Title Page and Project Brief |
Your title page should include the project title, your name, class, date, and the WJEC unit title if relevant. Below the title, write a short project brief one or two sentences long that explains what you intend to design and why. For example: 'To design and make a sustainable mobile phone holder from recycled cardboard that can support a phone at a 45-degree angle.' This gives your report a clear focus from the very start.
4. Writing a Strong Introduction |
The introduction sets the scene. Start by describing the design problem or user need you are addressing. Explain who the target user is and what everyday situation creates this need. State your aim clearly, and briefly outline what your report will cover. A good introduction makes the examiner want to read on because they understand the purpose of your project.
5. Research and Product Analysis |
This section proves you have looked at existing solutions, materials and manufacturing methods before jumping into your own design. Include notes on at least two existing products, describing their features, materials, strengths and weaknesses. Use a table to compare them. Also research appropriate materials, joining techniques and any scientific principles involved, such as forces, levers or stability. Always link your research back to your design specification.
6. Design Ideas and Development |
Present at least three initial design ideas with annotated sketches. Annotations should label key features and explain how each idea meets the specification points. After presenting your ideas, choose one to develop further. Justify your choice by comparing the ideas against the specification criteria. Show how you improve the chosen design through modelling, testing small parts or peer feedback. Include a final design drawing with measurements and material details.
7. Documenting the Making Process |
The making section is a step-by-step diary of your practical work. Use photographs or clear diagrams to show each main stage. Write about the tools and equipment you used, the health and safety precautions you took, and any problems you encountered. If you had to change your plan, explain why. This shows you can adapt and solve problems, which is a key engineering skill. Be honest and detailed.
8. Testing and Gathering Evidence |
Testing must be planned and fair. Describe how you tested your product against the original specification. For example, if your specification said the holder must support 500 g, load it with weights and take a photograph. Record measurements in a table and repeat tests where possible. Note down what worked well and what did not. Use sentences such as 'The phone holder maintained its 45-degree angle for 30 seconds with a 600 g load, exceeding the target.'
9. Evaluation: Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses |
Evaluation is your chance to think critically. Return to your specification and comment on every point. Was the target met fully, partially or not at all? Give reasons. Discuss the strengths of your final product, such as good aesthetics or clever use of materials. Then be open about weaknesses, like a weak joint or inaccurate cutting. Suggest realistic improvements that you would make if you had more time, materials or skills. This honest reflection is highly valued in WJEC engineering.
10. Conclusion and Personal Reflection |
The conclusion wraps up your project. Summarise what you achieved and whether you solved the original problem. Keep it brief and do not introduce new information. After the conclusion, add a short personal reflection: What new skills did you learn? What did you enjoy most? What would you do differently next time? This helps build your identity as a developing engineer.
11. Complete Sample Essay: Sustainable Phone Holder |
Below is a shortened but complete example that follows the framework. Read it as a model for your own work.
Title: Design and Make a Sustainable Mobile Phone Holder from Recycled Cardboard
Student: Alex Chen, Year 7
Introduction
Many people watch videos on their phones while sitting at a desk, but holding the phone for a long time is tiring. The problem is that commercial plastic stands are expensive and not always adjustable. My aim is to design and make a phone holder from a single sheet of recycled cardboard, capable of holding a 150 g phone at a 45-degree angle. This report describes my research, design, making, testing and evaluation.
Research
I analysed two existing cardboard stands. Product A used interlocking slots, was very strong but difficult to assemble. Product B used a folding triangle shape, easy to make but unstable with heavier phones. I also researched the material: double-wall corrugated cardboard is strong in compression. I tested the friction between cardboard and a phone case; it was surprisingly high. Therefore, my design must include a lip and a supportive back leg.
Design Ideas
d them against the specification points: cost (free), angle (45° ±5°), stability (no tipping with 200 g), ease of assembly (under 2 minutes) and aesthetics. I chose Idea 3 because it scored highest on stability and aesthetics, and I developed it by adding rounded edges and a cable management notch.
Making
I transferred the final design onto a flat sheet of recycled cardboard. I used a steel ruler and a craft knife with a cutting mat, always cutting away from my body. I scored the fold lines lightly to create clean hinges. I encountered a problem when one tab snapped; I strengthened it by adding a second layer of card glued with PVA. The whole process took about 45 minutes.
Testing
Test 1 (Angle): I measured the angle with a protractor; it was exactly 45°. Test 2 (Load): I placed a 200 g weight on the stand; it held for over a minute without tipping. Test 3 (Durability): I folded and unfolded the stand ten times; the hinge showed slight wear but remained functional. All results met the specification.
Evaluation
The product fully met the angle and load targets. The aesthetics were improved by the rounded edges. However, the hinge became weaker after repeated use; this could be solved by reinforcing it with fabric tape in the future. The cable management notch was very useful and well received by my classmates. If I were to repeat the project, I would experiment with a wooden dowel hinge for longer life.
Conclusion
I successfully designed and built a functional, sustainable phone holder that solves the identified problem. I learned how to score and bend corrugated cardboard accurately, and I now understand the importance of testing prototypes early. This project has increased my confidence in working with recycled materials.
12. Common Mistakes to Avoid |
Many students lose marks by missing out the research section, writing very little evaluation, or not including any photographs. Another mistake is writing vague statements like 'It was good' without using data or referring to the specification. Always check your spelling of technical terms such as 'corrugated', 'aesthetic' and 'specification'. Finally, do not forget to label your sketches and list your sources of information.
