📚 Year 7 WJEC Art: Case Study Practical Drill | Year 7 WJEC
In Year 7 WJEC Art, you will often be asked to look closely at an artwork and talk about what you see, feel and understand. This is called a case study – a detailed exploration of one piece of art. It teaches you to observe like an artist, question like a critic and build your own creative vocabulary. This article walks you through a complete practical drill, using Vincent van Gogh's 'The Starry Night' as our main example, so you can feel confident analysing any artwork.
1. What Is a Case Study in Art? |
An art case study is like being a detective. You gather clues from the artwork itself – the colours, lines, textures and subject – and then combine them with background information about the artist and the time they lived in. Your goal is to build a full picture of why the artwork looks the way it does and what it might mean.
For WJEC, your teacher will look for evidence that you can describe, analyse, interpret and evaluate an artwork. These four skills form the backbone of any good case study and will also help you develop your own artistic ideas.
2. The Four-Step Art Analysis Method |
Most art and design projects use a simple structure that moves from looking to thinking to feeling to judging. This is often called 'Describe – Analyse – Interpret – Evaluate'. When you practise these steps on a famous painting, you train your eye and mind at the same time.
| Step | What You Do | 步骤 | 你要做什么 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Describe | List everything you can see without adding opinions. | |
| 2. Analyse | Look at how the elements of art (line, colour, shape, etc.) are used. |
| 3. Interpret | Guess the story, mood or message the artist wanted to share. | |
| 4. Evaluate | Give your personal opinion and back it up with reasons from the artwork. | |
Keep this table in your sketchbook. It will help you structure your writing for any case study question in WJEC Year 7 Art.
3. Step 1: Describe – What Do You See?
Description is the foundation. Pretend you are describing the painting to someone who has never seen it before. Stick to facts: what objects, figures, colours, shapes and marks are there? Do not say whether you like it or not yet.
Use words like 'on the left', 'in the foreground', 'in the background', 'above', 'below', 'large', 'small' and 'repeated'. Try to name the main elements: trees, sky, stars, buildings, moon. For a successful description, you might also notice textures and brushstrokes – but only mention what you can literally see.
4. Step 2: Analyse – How Is the Artwork Made?
Analysis is where you look at the formal elements of art. These are the building blocks artists use: line, shape, tone, colour, pattern, texture, form and space. Ask yourself: what sorts of lines has the artist used? Are they thick, thin, wavy, straight, swirling? What colours dominate, and are they warm or cool? Is there contrast or harmony?
In WJEC, you should also think about materials and techniques. Has the artist used paint thickly (impasto) or smoothly? Are pencil marks blended or crosshatched? This step connects what you see with how the artist worked.
5. Step 3: Interpret – What Is the Meaning? |
Interpretation is where you become a storyteller. Based on your description and analysis, what do you think the artwork is about? Is there a story happening? What mood does the piece create – calm, energetic, sad, joyful, mysterious? There is often no single right answer here, but your ideas must be supported by evidence inside the picture.
Thinking about the title and the artist's life can give you extra clues. However, always link back to what you see. For example, swirling brushstrokes might suggest movement and restlessness, while a dark blue palette could express loneliness or peace – let the visual clues guide you.
6. Step 4: Evaluate – What Do You Think? |
Evaluation is your personal response. Now you can say whether you like the artwork or not, and more importantly, why. Use the formal elements and your interpretation to justify your opinion. For example, 'I find this painting powerful because the swirling lines make the sky feel alive and emotional, even though I would not usually choose such dark colours.'
A strong evaluation also considers context. How does this artwork compare to others you have seen? Can you link it to your own ideas for a project? In WJEC, showing that you can reflect on an artwork and connect it to your own practice will always earn higher marks.
7. Getting to Know Your Subject: Vincent van Gogh |
For our practical drill, we will use Vincent van Gogh's 'The Starry Night', painted in 1889. Van Gogh was a Dutch artist who painted with intense colour and dramatic brushwork. He only sold one painting during his lifetime, but today he is one of the most famous artists in the world.
He painted 'The Starry Night' from his window at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, France, while he was recovering from mental illness. The view shows a small village, a towering cypress tree, and a sky exploding with swirling stars and a glowing crescent moon. Knowing this background helps us interpret the painting more deeply.
8. Practical Drill: Describe 'The Starry Night' |
Let us begin the drill. First, describe what you see in The Starry Night. You might say: In the foreground there is a tall, dark green cypress tree that reaches up like a flame. Below it lies a small, quiet village with simple houses and a church steeple pointing upward. The background is filled with a night sky dominated by one large swirling cloud and eleven bright stars surrounded by circles of yellow and white light. A crescent moon glows in the upper-right corner. The whole painting seems full of motion, even though the village appears still and asleep.
Notice how the description states the obvious and the detailed, without interpreting. It notes position, colour and scale, using words like 'flame-like', 'swirling', 'glowing'. This is exactly what WJEC examiners want to see – clear, factual observation.
9. Practical Drill: Analyse the Formal Elements |
Now we analyse how Van Gogh created this night scene. The table below breaks down the key formal elements found in The Starry Night. Use a similar table in your own studies to gather visual facts.
| Element | Observation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Line | Wavy, swirling, curving lines dominate the sky; the tree has jagged, flame-like lines; buildings have calmer vertical and diagonal lines. | |
| Colour | Deep blues and purples create a cool, nocturnal feel; bright yellows and whites add contrast and energy. Warm yellow in stars contrasts with cool blue sky. |
| Texture | The paint is applied very thickly – you can see the ridges and strokes (impasto). This makes the surface look rough and lively. | |
| Shape & Form | The stars are formed by circular halos; the crescent moon is simplified but glowing; houses are geometric blocks. The cypress tree is a dark organic shape piercing the sky. |
| Space | The large tree in front and smaller village behind create deep space. The sky takes up most of the composition, making the night feel huge and powerful. |
Linking each element to a specific visual effect is the heart of a high-quality analysis. Notice how the swirling line suggests energy and the thick paint adds emotional weight.
10. Practical Drill: Interpret the Story and Mood |
Now combine description and analysis to unlock meaning. Many people feel that The Starry Night is not a simple landscape – it shows Van Gogh's inner emotional world. The sky seems to move with an almost dreamlike force, while the village below remains calm and still. Perhaps Van Gogh felt that nature was full of passion, while human life was quiet and contained. The cypress tree, a symbol of death and eternity in some cultures, reaches up as if connecting the earth to the swirling heavens.
Considering that Van Gogh painted this while in a mental hospital, the intense, restless brushstrokes might express feelings of anxiety, hope or awe. The glowing stars could represent light in the darkness – a small hope shining through a difficult time. Your own interpretation might be different, and that’s fine, as long as you can point to the paint, lines and colours to support your idea.
11. Practical Drill: Evaluate and Form Your Opinion |
An evaluation should answer the question 'How successful is this artwork?' Here is an example response: 'I believe The Starry Night is an incredibly successful painting because it makes me feel a sense of wonder every time I look at it. The bold swirling sky draws my eye around the whole canvas, and the thick paint gives the night a real texture I almost want to touch. Although the colours are mostly cool blues, the warm yellow stars balance the mood perfectly. It inspires me to experiment with expressive brushwork in my own landscape project.'
Your WJEC teacher will be looking for a personal voice backed by references to the work itself. Never just write 'I like it because it’s pretty.' Always explain what makes it work for you. You can also mention a weakness, if you have one – perhaps the village feels too simple compared to the sky, but this contrast might actually strengthen the painting’s message.
12. Top Tips for Your Own Case Study |
Before you start your own case study, remember these golden rules:
- Slow down and really look. Spend at least five minutes just looking before you write anything. The longer you observe, the more you will see.
- Use art vocabulary. Words like 'tone', 'composition', 'contrast', 'palette' and 'medium' instantly show you understand the subject. Make a word bank in your sketchbook.
- Back every opinion with a reason. Instead of 'The colours are nice', write 'The warm oranges and cool blues create an exciting contrast that makes the figure stand out.'
- Connect to context, but don't let it take over. Artist background information is useful, but the visual evidence should be your main proof.
- Practise with different artworks. Apply the Describe-Analyse-Interpret-Evaluate method to a photograph, a sculpture or even a film poster. The skill is transferable and will strengthen your own creative projects.
With regular practice, a detailed case study will become a natural way of thinking. Soon you will start using the same observational skills in your own art making, which is exactly what WJEC Art encourages.
