Welcome to the exciting world of Media Studies! Moving up to Year 7 means you will begin to look at films, TV shows, adverts, social media and newspapers not just as entertainment, but as texts that can be analysed and deconstructed. This transition guide introduces the key concepts and skills you will build throughout lower secondary, setting you up for success in CIE Media Studies and beyond.
1. What Is Media Studies? |
Media Studies is the subject that explores how media products are created, how they communicate meaning and how audiences respond to them. In Year 7, you will learn to look beyond the surface of a movie trailer or a magazine cover and ask questions like: Who made this? Why was it made? What techniques are used to grab my attention?
2. Media Language: The Building Blocks |
Just as English has grammar, media has its own language made up of signs and codes. A 'sign' can be anything that carries meaning—a colour, a sound, a facial expression. When we combine these signs, we create a 'code' that an audience can decode. For example, dark clouds in a film often code for danger or sadness.
- Denotation: the literal, obvious meaning (a rose is a flower)
- Connotation: the deeper, associated meaning (a rose suggests romance)
Mastering media language means you can describe not just what you see, but what it signifies. This is the first big step in analysing any media text.
3. Camera Shots and Angles |
In film and television, the camera is your eye. The distance and angle from which a subject is filmed greatly affect how you feel about them. Below is a handy table to remember the most common shots you will encounter in Year 7.
|---|---|---|
| Extreme Long Shot | 极远景 | Shows a vast landscape; character is tiny. | Establishes setting; makes character seem isolated. |
| Long Shot | 远景 | Full body of character in their surroundings. | Shows body language and location. |
| Mid Shot | 中景 | Waist upwards. | Balances subject and setting; good for dialogue. |
| Close-Up | 特写 | Face fills the frame. | Shows emotion; creates intimacy. |
| Extreme Close-Up | 极特写 | A single detail, such as eyes or a key. | Draws attention; adds mystery. |
Camera angles are equally important. A high-angle shot looks down on a character, making them seem weak or vulnerable. A low-angle shot looks up, giving the character power. An eye-level shot feels natural and neutral.
4. Mise-en-Scène: Setting the Scene |
Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning 'placed in the scene'. It covers everything you can see within the frame: the set, props, costume, lighting, colour and the positioning of actors. In Year 7, you will be asked: 'How does the mise-en-scène create a particular mood or tell us about a character?'
- Setting & Props: A messy bedroom with video game posters tells us the character is young and perhaps disorganised. A clean, minimalist office suggests professionalism.
- Costume & Make-up: A superhero's cape signals bravery and fantasy. A torn school uniform might indicate bullying or poverty.
- Lighting: Low-key lighting creates shadows and mystery, often used in horror. High-key lighting is bright and even, used in sitcoms and adverts to feel cheerful.
As you practise, try to 'read' the mise-en-scène before thinking about the story. It often gives you clues about what is really happening.
5. Sound in Media |
Sound is half the experience in any film or television text. In Media Studies, we split sound into two categories: diegetic and non-diegetic. Diegetic sound is any sound that exists within the world of the story—dialogue, footsteps, a doorbell. Characters can hear it. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience only—a dramatic soundtrack, a narrator's commentary, a sound effect that only we can hear.
Sound can also be described as parallel or contrapuntal. Parallel sound matches the mood of the scene (e.g. happy music during a birthday party). Contrapuntal sound deliberately clashes with what we see, creating unease (e.g. cheerful music playing while a robbery takes place).
6. Editing: Putting It All Together |
Editing is the process of selecting and combining shots to create a sequence. The way scenes are cut together controls the pace, guides the audience's attention and can even lie to us. A basic technique you will learn is the cut, where one shot instantly replaces another. A fade to black often signals the end of a scene. A crossfade (dissolve) can show time passing.
In Year 7, pay attention to shot duration. Quick cuts in an action sequence make your heart race, while long takes can build tension or feel calm. You can also look for match on action, when an editor cuts from one shot to another while the action continues smoothly, keeping the movement flowing.
7. Representation: How Media Portrays the World | 表征:媒体如何描绘世界
Media products are not windows to the real world; they are constructions. Representation is the way media chooses to show people, places, events and ideas. Every representation involves selection—what to include and what to leave out. As a Year 7 student, you will start to question stereotypes: are teenagers always shown as moody? Are boys and girls given different roles in adverts?
When analysing representation, think about: who is being represented? How are they being represented? Is it positive or negative? Is it realistic? Who benefits from this representation? For example, a news report on a protest might frame the protesters as either 'freedom fighters' or 'troublemakers' through word choice and images.
8. Audience: Who Is Watching? |
All media products are made with a specific audience in mind. Audience can be categorised by demographics like age, gender, income or by psychographics like interests, hobbies and values. A teen magazine and a business news channel have very different target audiences. In Year 7, you will learn to identify the target audience and explain how a media product appeals to them.
Uses and gratifications theory will be introduced at this stage: audiences use media not just to be informed, but also for personal identity (relating to characters), for social interaction (talking about shows with friends) and for entertainment (escaping from daily life). Think about why you watch your favourite YouTuber—it is rarely just for one reason.
9. Narrative Structure |
Stories in media often follow a clear structure. One of the simplest models you will encounter is Todorov's equilibrium theory: a state of balance (equilibrium) is disrupted by a problem (disequilibrium), and then the problem is resolved to create a new balance (new equilibrium). Think of a typical superhero film: the city is safe, a villain arrives, the hero defeats the villain, the city is safe again but changed.
You will also explore character functions, building on Propp's work: we look for the hero, the villain, the donor (who gives the hero a tool or advice), the helper and the princess (the prize). Not every film has all of them, but recognising these patterns helps you compare texts across genres and cultures.
10. Genre and Its Codes |
Genre is a way of grouping media texts by their shared features, or codes. A horror film and a romantic comedy look and sound completely different because they use different codes. When you watch a trailer, you can probably guess the genre within seconds based on the lighting, music, setting and character types. This is called generic convention.
In Year 7, you will be encouraged to spot genre iconography: the visual symbols strongly associated with a genre. Spaceships and laser guns signal sci-fi; cowboy hats and tumbleweed signal westerns. Hybrid genres that mix codes, such as a romantic comedy with horror elements ('rom-com-zom'), are also becoming popular and make analysis even more interesting.
11. Media Industries and the Big Picture |
Although this becomes a bigger topic at IGCSE level, it is never too early to ask: who produces the media we consume? Big media companies, often called conglomerates, own many different brands. A single corporation might own a film studio, a TV network, a music label and a video game developer. This concentration of ownership can affect the range of voices we hear and the kinds of stories that get told.
You can also begin to notice the role of regulation. In the UK, adverts must not be misleading, and TV shows before 9 p.m. must follow rules that protect younger viewers, known as the watershed. When you see a 'sponsored by' label on a video, think about how money shapes content.
12. Analysing a Media Text Step by Step |
By the end of Year 7, you should be able to approach any unseen media text—such as a poster, a short clip or a website—with confidence. Follow this simple analysis framework: first, describe what you literally see and hear (denotation). Then, explain what these elements suggest or symbolise (connotation). Next, link your observations to key concepts: how does the camera work affect audience? How does mise-en-scène build representation? Finally, offer a mini conclusion about the overall message.
Practice makes perfect. Watch adverts with the sound off and describe how meaning is created through visuals alone. Rewatch your favourite film's opening scene and note every camera shot and edit. Media Studies is a subject that rewards your curiosity—the more you look, the more you will see.
