1. Particle Theory and States of Matter |
All matter is made of tiny particles that are in constant motion. The energy, arrangement, and distance between particles determine the physical state.
In solids, particles are tightly packed in a regular pattern and vibrate in fixed positions.
In liquids, particles are still close together but can slide past one another, so liquids can flow and take the shape of the container.
In gases, particles are far apart, move randomly at high speeds, and completely fill any container.
2. Changes of State and Energy |
Melting, freezing, boiling, and condensation are physical changes. During a change of state, the temperature remains constant even though heat is being added or removed.
The energy supplied during melting or boiling is used to overcome the attractive forces between particles, not to raise the temperature.
The reverse processes (freezing, condensation) release energy as particles become more ordered.
Melting point = Freezing point ; Boiling point = Condensation point
3. Atomic Structure |
An atom contains a central nucleus made of protons (positive charge) and neutrons (no charge), with negatively charged electrons arranged in shells around the nucleus.
number (Z) = number of protons. Mass number (A) = number of protons + number of neutrons.
In a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons.
Number of neutrons = A − Z
中子数 = A − Z
Electrons fill shells according to the 2,8,8 rule for the first 20 elements: the first shell holds up to 2 electrons, the second up to 8, and the third up to 8.
4. Elements, Compounds and Mixtures |
An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. A compound is a pure substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded in a fixed ratio.
A mixture consists of two or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically joined and can be separated by physical methods.
Compounds obey the law of constant composition: a particular compound always contains the same elements in the same proportions by mass.
5. Chemical Formulae and Valency |
A chemical formula uses element symbols and subscript numbers to show the type and number of atoms in a substance. Valency is the combining capacity of an atom.
To write a formula for an ionic compound, swap the valencies of the combining ions and write them as subscripts. If the valencies are the same, they cancel out.
l⁻) → NaCl; Calcium oxide (Ca²⁺ and O²⁻) → CaO; Magnesium chloride (Mg²⁺ and Cl⁻) → MgCl₂.
6. Relative Atomic Mass (Aᵣ) and Relative Formula Mass (Mᵣ) |
Aᵣ is the average mass of an atom of an element on a scale where a carbon-12 atom has a mass of exactly 12. Mᵣ is the sum of the relative atomic masses of all atoms in a formula unit.
Mᵣ = Σ (Aᵣ × number of atoms of that element)
Example: Mᵣ(H₂O) = (2 × 1) + 16 = 18. Mᵣ(CO₂) = 12 + (2 × 16) = 44.
示例:Mᵣ(H₂O) = (2 × 1) + 16 = 18;Mᵣ(CO₂) = 12 + (2 × 16) = 44。
7. Percentage Composition by Mass |
The percentage by mass of an element in a compound can be calculated from the formula of the compound.
% by mass = (number of atoms × Aᵣ of the element / Mᵣ of compound) × 100%
Example: In H₂O, % hydrogen = (2 × 1 / 18) × 100% ≈ 11.1%; % oxygen = (16 / 18) × 100% ≈ 88.9%.
8. Law of Conservation of Mass |
During a chemical reaction, matter is neither created nor destroyed. The total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products.
This means atoms are simply rearranged; the number of each type of atom stays the same before and after the reaction.
If the mass appears to change in an open container, it is usually because a gas has entered or escaped.
9. Balancing Chemical Equations |
A balanced chemical equation has the same number of each type of atom on both sides of the arrow. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Write the correct formulae for all reactants and products.
Step 2: Count the number of atoms of each element on both sides.
Step 3: Add big numbers (coefficients) in front of formulae to balance the atoms — never change the small subscript numbers.
Example: H₂ + O₂ → H₂O becomes 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O.
示例:H₂ + O₂ → H₂O 配平为 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O。
Check: 4 H atoms and 2 O atoms on each side.
10. Acids, Bases and the pH Scale | 酸、碱及pH
An acid is a substance that produces hydrogen ions (H⁺) in water. A base is a substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. Alkalis are soluble bases.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14: pH < 7 is acidic, pH = 7 is neutral, pH > 7 is alkaline.
Universal indicator turns red in strong acids, green in neutral solutions, and purple in strong alkalis.
Neutralisation reaction: Acid + Base → Salt + Water. Example: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O.
11. Rates of Reaction |
The rate of a chemical reaction tells us how fast a reactant is used up or a product is formed. It can be increased by raising temperature, increasing concentration, increasing surface area, or adding a catalyst.
Average rate of reaction can be calculated from the change in amount of a product (or reactant) over a period of time.
Average rate = change in mass or volume / time taken
Units can be g/s, cm³/s, or g/min depending on the measurement.
12. Mass Concentration |
Mass concentration describes the mass of solute dissolved in a certain volume of solution. It is often used before the mole concept is introduced.
Concentration (g/dm³) = mass of solute (g) / volume of solution (dm³)
Remember: 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³. So 100 cm³ = 0.1 dm³.
记住:1 dm³ = 1000 cm³。因此 100 cm³ = 0.1 dm³。
f 5 g of salt is dissolved in 250 cm³ of water, concentration = 5 g / 0.25 dm³ = 20 g/dm³.
