📚 Year 7 OCR Media Studies: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | Year 7 OCR
Welcome to your summer bridging course for OCR Media Studies. This programme is designed to give you a flying start in Year 7 by introducing the core ideas that shape every film, advert, website and game you love. You will not need any special equipment – just your own experience of watching screens, listening to music and scrolling through apps. By the time September arrives, you will already be thinking like a media analyst and a creative producer.
1. Welcome to Media Studies |
Media Studies is the subject that turns you from a passive consumer into an active, questioning explorer of everything you watch, read and play. It asks: who made this, why did they make it, and how does it work on our emotions?
Whether it is a blockbuster film, a YouTube thumbnail or a cereal box, every media product is made with choices. Learning to spot those choices is the first step in the course. You will discover that the media is not a window on the world; it is a carefully crafted version of reality.
2. The Key Concepts of Media |
OCR Media Studies is built around four big ideas that act like lenses for examining any media text: Media Language, Media Audiences, Media Institutions and Media Representation. Think of them as the toolkit you will carry in your back pocket all year.
- Media Language is the grammar of images, sounds and editing.
- Media Audiences explores who the product is aimed at and how they react.
- Media Institutions looks at the companies and organisations behind the product.
- Media Representation asks how media shows people, places and events.
During this bridging course, we will touch on each of these concepts so that you arrive at senior school with a clear map of what lies ahead.
3. Media Language: Signs and Symbols |
Media Language begins with semiotics – the study of signs. A sign is anything that carries meaning. It is made of two parts: the signifier (the thing you see or hear) and the signified (the idea it creates in your mind).
For example, a picture of a heart is a signifier; romance, love or health are possible signifieds. When you see a red rose on a film poster, you immediately link it to passion or tragedy. Producers use these codes deliberately because they know audiences share the same cultural knowledge.
Colour is another powerful code. Warm colours like red and orange suggest excitement or danger; cool blues and greens imply calmness or sadness. Lighting too can create meaning – low-key lighting with deep shadows is often used in horror posters to build fear.
4. Visual Storytelling: Camera Shots and Angles |
Moving-image media such as film and television use camera shots and angles to tell a story without words. A single frame can communicate power, weakness, intimacy or isolation.
- Extreme long shot shows the subject small against a vast setting, often making them seem tiny or lost.
- Close-up fills the frame with a face or object, drawing attention to emotion or detail.
- Low-angle shot looks up at a character, making them appear powerful or threatening.
- High-angle shot looks down, making the character seem small, weak or trapped.
Start noticing these shots the next time you watch a programme. Ask yourself why the director chose that particular distance or angle, and what it makes you feel.
5. Audience: Who is Watching? |
Every media product is made with a target audience in mind. Age, gender, hobbies and even the device you use all help producers decide how to shape their message.
Think of a television advert for a children's toy. It uses bright primary colours, upbeat music and fast editing because it knows children respond well to high-energy content. The same toy might be advertised to parents with a focus on educational value and durability.
Audience theories help us see that audiences are not all the same. The 'active audience' idea says that viewers interpret media in their own way, bringing their own life experience to the screen. So two people can watch the same clip and take away completely different meanings.
6. Media Institutions and Ownership |
Behind every film, game or news article there is an institution – a company or organisation that produces, distributes and sometimes owns the product. Understanding who makes our media changes how we read it.
Public service broadcasters like the BBC are funded by the licence fee and have a duty to inform, educate and entertain everyone. Commercial broadcasters like ITV rely on advertising, so their programmes need to attract large audiences for advertisers.
Global conglomerates such as Disney own multiple studios, channels and streaming platforms. This horizontal integration means one company can control everything from story to screen, influencing which stories get told. When we spot a franchise, we are often looking at the plan of a huge institution.
7. Representation: How Media Shapes Our View |
Representation is the way media presents people, places and events. It is never neutral; it is always a constructed version that selects and emphasises certain details while leaving others out.
Stereotypes are simplified, often repeated, representations of a group of people – for example, the 'smart but socially awkward' scientist or the 'tough, unfeeling' hero. While stereotypes can be a quick way to tell a story, they can also be limiting and unfair when they are the only representation we see.
Look at a magazine cover featuring a celebrity. How is that person lit? What expressions and poses are used? How much of the image has been edited? All of these choices build a representation that might reflect a particular ideal rather than reality.
8. Genre: Patterns and Expectations |
Genre is like a contract between a media product and its audience. It sets up a set of expectations through a pattern of repeated elements – settings, character types, music styles and plot structures.
A horror film poster, for instance, often uses dark colours, a distressed font and an isolated house. An adventure game will feature maps, ancient ruins and a hero on a quest. Audiences enjoy genres because they know broadly what to expect, but they also demand small surprises to stay interested.
Hybrid genres mix codes from two or more genres – think of a romantic comedy or a sci-fi horror. Recognising genre codes is a fun detective game you can play with every trailer you see.
9. Cross-Media and Convergence |
Rarely do we experience a story on just one platform. A film might spin off into a video game, a graphic novel and a social media filter. This is cross-media storytelling, where a single narrative world spreads across multiple media forms.
Technological convergence has blurred the lines between devices. Your phone is no longer just a phone; it is a camera, a games console, a cinema and a newspaper. This means institutions can reach audiences at more touchpoints than ever before.
When you study a modern film franchise, look at its website, its app and its YouTube channel. Notice how each platform tells a slightly different piece of the story, encouraging you to stay connected to the brand for longer. That is convergence working to build loyalty.
10. How to Analyse a Media Text |
Analysing a media text means writing about the choices you observe and linking them to meaning. A simple framework called Mise-en-scène – everything placed in front of the camera – can be your starting point.
When you look at a film poster, examine these elements: colour palette, font style, lighting, character expression, props and layout. For each one, ask "What does this make me think or feel?" and "Why would the producer want that reaction?"
For example, a poster for a family animation might use a bright, rounded font, smiley characters facing the viewer and a sunny background. These choices communicate warmth and safety to attract families. A thriller poster might use a clenched fist, heavy shadows and a jagged font to promise tension.
11. Creative Media Project: Make Your Own Poster |
Now it is your turn to be a media producer. Design a film poster for a story from your imagination – or one that you have read and would like to adapt. You can draw by hand, use collage or try a free digital tool.
Think about the checklist you have built during this course: choose colours that match the mood, pick a font that signals the genre, place characters in a way that shows their importance, and include a tagline that hooks the audience.
When you have finished, write a short paragraph explaining what audience you aimed at, what representation you created and how you used codes to suggest genre. This is the kind of production task you will meet in Year 7, so you are already building a portfolio.
12. Next Steps: Your Media Diary |
To keep your media brain ticking over the summer, start a media diary. Each day, jot down one media product you encountered – an advert on a bus, a TikTok sound, a game loading screen – and write one sentence about the choices you noticed.
This habit will transform the way you see the world. By September, you will have a record of real-life media texts to bring into class. You will also be quicker at spotting codes, audiences and representation without anyone prompting you.
We hope this short course has sparked your curiosity. Media Studies is a subject that is all around you, every moment. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we look forward to seeing you dive deeper into the world of media.
