1. Welcome to Year 7 Drama!
In your first year of secondary drama, you will not just read plays – you will bring them to life. Lessons are built around three interconnected activities: creating original pieces, performing scripted and devised work, and responding to your own and others' performances through thoughtful feedback. The classroom is a workshop where everyone's ideas count.
Drama helps you develop transferable skills such as clear communication, creative problem‑solving and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of people. It also gives you a safe space to explore different perspectives and to build self‑assurance. The more you put in, the more you will discover about what you can achieve as a performer and a maker of theatre.
2. The Core Elements of Drama |
Every piece of theatre, from a short improvisation to a full‑length play, is built from a set of fundamental ingredients. OCR Drama encourages you to think about these elements whenever you create or analyse a performance. The most frequently used elements include role and character, situation, tension, focus, space, time, language, movement, mood and symbol.
'Role' is the part you play, while 'character' is the detailed personality you build for that role. 'Situation' refers to what is happening – the given circumstances that drive the story forward. 'Tension' keeps the audience gripped; it can be created through conflict, surprise or a sense of urgency. 'Focus' draws attention to the most important moment or person on stage. All these elements work together like ingredients in a recipe, and learning to control them is the craft of the dramatist.
3. Improvisation: Thinking on Your Feet |
Improvisation – often shortened to 'improv' – is the art of creating a scene without a script. In Year 7 you will use improvisation to generate ideas, explore characters and build confidence in making bold choices. It teaches you to listen, react honestly and trust your instincts.
A golden rule of improv is 'Yes, and...'. This means you accept whatever idea your partner offers (the 'Yes') and then add something new to develop it (the 'and'). Blocking – saying 'no' to an idea – stops the scene from growing. Practise simple exercises at home, such as starting a conversation where every sentence must begin with 'Yes, and...'. You will quickly see how stories can spiral in imaginative directions.
4. Building a Character |
Creating a believable character involves much more than learning lines. You start by asking questions: Who is this person? What do they want in this scene? Why are they feeling this way? In OCR Drama you will use a range of strategies to build a character from the inside out, including exploring backstory, motivation and status.
Another powerful tool is physicalisation – finding how your character walks, stands, gestures and makes eye contact. Try a 'character walk' exercise: choose an animal that matches your character's energy, move like that animal for a minute, then gradually transform the animal movements into human behaviour. You will discover that a tiny shift in posture can tell the audience a great deal about power, mood and attitude.
5. Using Your Voice and Body |
As an actor, your voice and body are your primary instruments. Developing control over them will give you the ability to shift atmosphere, clarify meaning and hold the audience's attention. The four key vocal skills are volume, pitch, pace and clarity – often remembered as 'projection, tone, speed and diction'.
Physical skills work in tandem with the voice. Posture communicates status and emotion; gestures can underline a word or replace speech entirely; facial expressions reveal inner thoughts; and the way you use the space – moving quickly, holding still, turning away – shapes the rhythm of a scene. Practise delivering the same short sentence while changing one element at a time: say it loudly, then slowly, then with a heavy slouch. Notice how the meaning shifts.
6. Understanding Scripts and Stage Directions |
A script is a blueprint for performance. In Year 7 you will begin to read and interpret short scripts, paying attention not only to what characters say but also to the stage directions printed in italics. Stage directions tell you where the action takes place, how a line should be delivered, and when a character enters or exits.
Common stage directions include 'Enter', 'Exit', 'Aside' (a remark to the audience that other characters on stage do not hear), and 'Pause'. You will also encounter abbreviations like 'SR' (stage right – the actor's right when facing the audience) and 'DS' (downstage – the part of the stage closest to the audience). Familiarising yourself with these conventions will make your first script exploration far smoother.
7. Stage Spaces and Design |
Theatre can happen almost anywhere, but understanding the main types of stage will help you make stronger choices as a performer and designer. The three most common configurations are the proscenium arch (a framed stage where the audience sits on one side), the thrust stage (which juts into the audience, who sit on three sides) and the in‑the‑round or arena stage (with the audience on all sides).
Design is a crucial part of storytelling. Set, props, costume, lighting and sound all contribute to establishing the world of the play. For example, a single chair placed under a harsh spotlight immediately suggests an interrogation. Thinking like a designer – asking 'What do I want the audience to feel when they first see the stage?' – deepens your overall understanding of drama.
8. Working as an Ensemble |
Drama is a team sport. Even a solo speech relies on a director, designer and technician. In Year 7 you will spend a great deal of time working in groups to devise scenes, solve problems and support each other's creative risks. The trust you build within your ensemble directly affects the quality of the work you produce.
Good ensemble practice starts with listening – not just to words but to energy, eye contact and body language. Warm‑up games like 'Pass the Clap' or 'One‑Word Story' train you to stay connected with the group. Remember that every idea offered is a gift; the ensemble's job is to shape those gifts into compelling theatre. When collaboration truly works, the result is always more imaginative than what any single person could have planned alone.
9. Key Drama Vocabulary |
Developing a shared vocabulary allows you to talk about your work with clarity and precision. The table below lists some of the core terms you will encounter in Year 7 OCR Drama. Try using them when discussing a performance you have seen or even a television drama.

10. Getting Ready: Summer Activities & Tips |
You do not need a stage to start developing your drama skills. Here are three simple activities that you can do over the summer – on your own or with friends – to strengthen your imagination, observation and expressiveness.
1. Character spotting. Spend ten minutes in a park, café or on a bus simply watching people. Choose one stranger and, in a notebook, invent a name, a secret and a strong desire for them. 2. Story dice. Grab three random objects from around your home. Give yourself two minutes to weave them into a short story that has a clear beginning, middle and end. Then tell the story aloud, using a different voice for each object if you like. 3. Mirror game. Pair up
