1. The Master Theorem of Drama |
The foundation of all performance can be expressed as a simple sum of six elements. Originally described by Aristotle, these are the building blocks of every play, improvisation, or devised piece you will create. Understanding this theorem helps you ensure no vital part of your drama is missing.
Drama = Character + Plot + Theme + Dialogue + Music + Spectacle
- Character: The person, animal, or being in the story. Their wants and needs drive the action. |
- Plot: The sequence of events, the 'what happens'. It must have a beginning, middle, and end. |
- Theme: The central idea or message, such as friendship, courage, or betrayal. |
- Dialogue: The words spoken by characters. It reveals character and advances the plot. |
- Music: All sounds, including rhythm, vocal tone, and any musical accompaniment. |
- Spectacle: Everything you see: setting, costumes, lighting, props, and physical action. |
2. Character Construction Formula |
A character becomes alive and believable when you understand their inner drive and the challenges they face. This formula helps you move beyond a stereotype and create a three-dimensional person on stage. Every acting choice should be based on these three components.
Character = Objective + Obstacle + Tactic
Objective is what the character desperately wants in a scene (their goal). It must be a strong, active verb: to convince, to escape, to impress. Obstacle is what stands in their way – another character, a situation, or even their own fear. Tactic is the strategy or action they use to overcome the obstacle and get what they want. Characters change tactics when one fails; this is where the conflict and drama happen.
3. Plot Structure Arc Theorem |
Whether for a short improvisation or a scripted play, the plot follows a predictable emotional and structural curve. Mapping your story to this arc guarantees that the audience stays engaged. Every performance you create should consciously use these five stages.
Plot = Exposition → Rising Action → Climax → Falling Action → Resolution
|---|---|
| Exposition | 开端 | Introduces characters, setting, and the initial conflict. Start of the story. |
| Rising Action | 发展 | Tension builds through obstacles and complications. The conflict becomes more intense. |
| Climax | 高潮 | The turning point, the moment of highest tension. The main conflict is confronted directly. |
| Falling Action | 下降动作 | The consequences of the climax play out. Loose ends begin to tie up. |
| Resolution | 结局 | The final outcome. A new balance is established, or a final image is left. |
4. Vocal Projection Equation |
To be heard clearly by the back row without shouting, you need a safe and supported physical technique. Projection is not about being loud; it is about clarity and energy. This equation breaks down the physical ingredients.
Projection = Diaphragm Support + Open Mouth Cavity + Clear Articulation + Intention
Diaphragm Support: Breathe deeply so your stomach expands, not your chest. Use this muscle to power your voice. Open Mouth Cavity: Drop your jaw freely to let sound resonate. Clear Articulation: Use your tongue, teeth, and lips precisely to shape every consonant and vowel. Intention: Aim your words at a specific target – you always speak to make something happen.
5. Stage Geography Coordinate Formula |
Directors and actors use a universal spatial language to know exactly where to move. The grid is based on your perspective when facing the audience. Master this formula to block scenes accurately and safely.
Stage Space = Upstage/Downstage × Stage Left/Right × Centre
In this system, 'Downstage' is nearest the audience, 'Upstage' is furthest away. 'Stage Right' and 'Stage Left' are from the actor's perspective. 'Centre' splits the stage equally. For example, 'Downstage Right' is the front corner on the actor's right hand. This system also creates powerful areas: Downstage Centre is the strongest position for a key moment, while Upstage areas suggest distance or secrecy.
6. Improvisation Cooperation Theorem |
Improvisation fails when performers block each other's ideas. The core mechanism for building a scene together is always acceptance, followed by addition. Treat your partner's offer as a precious gift and build upon it.
Improvisation = 'Yes, and...' + Spontaneity + Active Listening
'Yes, and...' means you fully accept the reality your scene partner creates and then add a new piece of information, a character detail, or an action. Spontaneity is trusting your first instinct without self-censoring. Active Listening is focusing completely on your partner's words and body language, not just waiting for your turn to speak. A scene grows when both actors constantly use all three elements.
7. Dramatic Tension Generation Formula |
Tension is the electric charge that keeps the audience leaning forward. It does not appear by accident; you build it by strategically combining specific ingredients. Understanding how to create and release tension is central to structuring a gripping scene.
Tension = Conflict + Suspense + Dramatic Irony + Urgency
Conflict is the clash of objectives between characters. Suspense is the audience's worried anticipation of what might happen next. Dramatic Irony occurs when the audience knows something the characters do not, creating dread or comedy. Urgency is a time pressure – 'We must find it before the bell rings!' Layer these elements to intensify tension, and then strategically release it through a moment of action or revelation.
8. Physical Characterisation Theorem |
Your body tells a story even before you speak. Consciously shaping your physicality is a fast route to creating a believable character different from yourself. Use this theorem to explore how inner thoughts are expressed outwardly.
Characterisation = Posture + Gesture + Facial Expression + Gait + Tension Level
Posture is how you hold your spine (slumped, ramrod straight, twisted). Gesture is specific movements of hands and arms to communicate. Facial Expression reveals the immediate emotion. Gait is the manner of walking (shuffling, striding, tip-toeing). Tension Level refers to how much muscular tightness you carry – a terrified character might be rigid, a relaxed one loose. Change one element, and the whole character shifts. A queen might have an upright posture, controlled gestures, and a smooth gliding gait.
9. Scene Building Blueprint Equation |
When devising your own material, you need a reliable plan to turn an idea into a playable moment. This equation ensures your scene has all the necessary dramatic components. Missing just one can make a scene feel empty or confusing.
ne = Setting + Characters with Objectives + Dialogue & Action + Conflict + Mood/Atmosphere
Setting answers 'where and when?', which informs character behaviour and plot. Characters with Objectives ensures every character wants something specific right now. Dialogue & Action are what is said and done to pursue those objectives. Conflict emerges as objectives clash – someone must block someone else. Mood/Atmosphere is the emotional weather created through pacing, sound, light, and stillness. A scene in a haunted library at midnight has a very different mood from a sunny playground scene.
10. Rehearsal Effectiveness Formula |
Time in the rehearsal room is precious. This formula transforms a group of individuals into an ensemble presenting a polished piece. It is not about repeating a scene until it is stale, but about a focused cycle of improvement.
Effective Rehearsal = Warm-up + Specific Focus + Actionable Feedback + Repeat
Warm-up prepares your voice, body, and mind for the work. Specific Focus means each run of a scene has one clear goal: 'This time, let's work only on the moment of silence before the confession.' Actionable Feedback is constructive and practical – instead of 'that was good', try 'I believed your anger more when you lowered your voice rather than shouted.' Then you Repeat the section immediately, trying the new idea. This loop creates rapid, visible progress.
11. Performance Evaluation Theorem |
Analysing your own work and the work of others is a key skill in OCR Drama. Use a structured approach to give specific, respectful feedback that helps performances grow. This theorem balances recognising strengths with identifying clear next steps.
Evaluation = What Worked + Why it Worked + One Improvement + How to Achieve it
Begin by stating clearly What Worked – be precise about a moment, a choice, or a skill. Then explain Why it Worked, linking it to an element of drama or the chosen formula ('The moment of dramatic irony created great tension because we knew the spy was behind the door'). Next, offer One Improvement, not a list. Finally, suggest How to Achieve it with a practical experiment ('Try turning your back to the audience when the character lies, to show their shame'). This method makes feedback safe, useful, and professional.
12. Rehearsal Room Safety Formula |
A respectful and physically safe environment is the foundation of all successful drama work. Creativity can only flourish when everyone feels secure and supported. This formula is a non-negotiable rule, not a suggestion.
Safe Practice = Spatial Awareness + Consent + Emotional Boundaries + Focus
Spatial Awareness means knowing where your body and props are relative to others at all times. Consent is asking before making physical contact and respecting a 'no'. Emotional Boundaries means you can stop an intense role at any moment if it becomes too heavy; use a post-rehearsal ritual to step out of character. Focus eliminates distracting or dangerous behaviour. A company that follows this formula creates its best, bravest work.
