Starting secondary school is an exciting journey, and Philosophy opens up a world of deep questions and critical thinking. This transition guide is written for Year 7 students who are beginning a philosophy course built on the OCR style of learning. You will learn how to think, not just what to think, exploring topics that range from ethics to the nature of reality. By the end of this guide you will know what the subject involves, which skills matter most, how your work is likely to be marked, and how to build habits that will serve you all the way to GCSE and beyond.
1. What is Philosophy? |
Philosophy comes from two Greek words: 'philo' (love) and 'sophia' (wisdom), so it literally means the love of wisdom. It is the activity of asking fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason and language. Unlike science, which tests claims through experiment and observation, philosophy works mainly through logical reasoning, careful definition and critical analysis. A philosopher rarely asks 'what is the speed of light?' and instead asks 'what does it mean to say that something is true?'
Philosophy is usually divided into five main branches, and you will meet all of them in some form during your school career.
- Metaphysics – the study of reality, existence and the universe. Typical question: what is a mind, and is it the same as a brain?
- Epistemology – the study of knowledge, belief and justification. Typical question: how do you know you are not dreaming right now?
- Ethics – the study of moral values and how we should act. Typical question: is it ever right to lie to protect someone's feelings?
- Logic – the study of correct reasoning and argument structure. Typical question: if the premises are true, must the conclusion be true?
- Aesthetics – the study of beauty, art and taste. Typical question: is beauty in the object or in the eye of the beholder?
A simple way to remember the difference is this: metaphysics asks what there is, epistemology asks how we know, ethics asks what we should do, logic asks whether our reasoning works, and aesthetics asks what we value in art and experience.
2. The OCR Approach to Philosophy | OCR
OCR stands for Oxford Cambridge and RSA, one of the leading exam boards in the United Kingdom. OCR sets specifications for subjects such as GCSE Religious Studies, which includes philosophy and ethics units, and A Level Philosophy and Religious Studies. It is worth knowing from the start that OCR itself certifies students at GCSE and A Level rather than at Year 7. A Year 7 'OCR Philosophy' course is therefore usually a school-designed transition course that borrows the OCR style, vocabulary and question formats so that you are already comfortable with them when formal exams arrive.
The OCR style of learning , which emphasises analytical writing, the evaluation of arguments, and understanding a range of viewpoints, including ones you personally disagree with. It is not about memorising a list of facts about famous thinkers. You are expected to explain what a view means, give reasons for and against it, and then reach a supported judgement of your own.
In practice, this means three habits matter more than anything else: read questions carefully, use precise vocabulary, and always explain the reason behind your reason.
3. Why Philosophy Matters in Year 7 | 为什么七年级要学好哲学
Philosophy is sometimes treated as a soft subject, but the skills it builds are among the most transferable you can develop. Constructing a clear argument helps in English essays, in history source questions and in science explanations. Evaluating evidence helps you judge whether a news headline or a social media claim deserves your trust. Thinking about ethics helps you handle disagreements with friends, family and classmates more thoughtfully.
There is also a personal benefit. Year 7 brings new friendships, new pressures and a lot of questions about identity. Philosophy gives you a structured way to examine those questions instead of simply reacting to them. It teaches you that 'I do not know yet' is a respectable answer, provided you then go and investigate.
A final point: philosophy rewards curiosity. Students who ask 'but why?' and 'what if the opposite were true?' tend to improve quickly, because those are exactly the moves that gain marks in later exams.
4. Core Skills You Will Build |
Your Year 7 philosophy course is really a skills course. The content is the vehicle; the skills are the destination. Below are the six abilities that most teachers look for, and that examiners later reward.
- Defining terms – explaining exactly what a word such as 'good', 'free' or 'real' means in context.
- Constructing arguments – arranging reasons so that they support a conclusion.
- Identifying assumptions – spotting the unstated belief an argument depends on.
- Evaluating – weighing strengths and weaknesses rather than simply describing.
- Using examples and counterexamples – testing a general claim against a specific case.
- Reaching a justified judgement – giving a conclusion that your reasons actually support.
A useful rule of thumb: description earns you some credit, but evaluation earns you the highest marks. Whenever you finish explaining a view, ask yourself 'so what? is it convincing? why?'
5. From Primary to Secondary: What Changes |
In primary school you were often asked what you think. In secondary philosophy you are asked why you think it, what someone who disagrees would say, and how you would reply. That shift from opinion to argument is the single biggest change in Year 7.
The table below summarises some of the practical differences you may notice.
| Sharing opinions in circle time | 在圆圈时间里分享看法 | Writing structured arguments | 撰写结构化论证 |
Do not worry if your first written answers feel clumsy. Fluency in philosophical writing is built through repetition, feedback and redrafting, not through talent.
6. Thinking Tools: Logic and Argument |
The most basic tool in philosophy is the argument. In everyday English, 'argument' often means a quarrel. In philosophy, an argument is a set of reasons offered in support of a conclusion.
Argument = Premises (reasons) → Conclusion
Consider this classic example. Premise 1: all humans are mortal. Premise 2: Socrates is human. Conclusion: therefore Socrates is mortal. This is a deductive argument: if the premises are true and the form is valid, the conclusion must be true. Such a valid argument with true premises is called sound.
Not all arguments are deductive. Inductive arguments make the conclusion probable rather than certain. For example: the sun has risen every day recorded in history; therefore the sun will probably rise tomorrow. That is very strong reasoning, but it is not the same kind of certainty as the Socrates example.
Two vocabulary points worth memorising now: a priori reasoning works from concepts alone, while a posteriori reasoning depends on experience and evidence.
7. Common Fallacies to Spot |
Once you can build an argument, you can also learn to spot a bad one. A fallacy is a mistake in reasoning that makes an argument unreliable even when it sounds persuasive.
- Ad hominem – attacking the person instead of the argument. |
- Straw man – misrepresenting an opponent's view so it is easier to knock down.
- False dilemma – presenting only two options when more exist. |
- Circular reasoning – using the conclusion as one of the premises. |
- Hasty generalisation – drawing a broad conclusion from too few cases. |
- Slippery slope – claiming one small step must lead to an extreme outcome. |
- Appeal to authority – treating a famous name as proof rather than as evidence to examine. |
In lessons, a quick way to practise is to listen to a classmate's answer and ask: is the reasoning valid, are the premises true, and is anything important missing?
8. How to Write a Philosophy Paragraph |
Most schools teach a simple paragraph structure in Year 7. You may hear it called PEE, PEEL or PETAL depending on your school, but the underlying logic is the same.
- P – Point: state your claim clearly in one sentence. | P——
- E – Evidence: give a reason, example or thinker's view that supports it. | E——
- E – Explanation: explain why the evidence actually supports the point. | E——
- L / A – Link or Analysis: evaluate, add a counterargument, or link back to the question.
Here is a short model. 'Utilitarianism is a strong approach to moral decisions (point). It judges actions by the amount of happiness they produce, which is measurable and impartial (evidence). This means it treats everyone's happiness as equally important, which many people find fair (explanation). However, critics argue it could justify harming a minority for the benefit of the majority, which suggests the theory needs limits (evaluation).'
Notice how the evaluation sentence is what lifts the paragraph above simple description. Aim for at least one evaluative sentence in every paragraph you write.
9. Core Topics You Will Meet |
Year 7 philosophy courses vary between schools, but certain themes appear again and again because they prepare you well for GCSE and A Level units.
- The nature of reality – is the physical world all there is, or could there be more?
- Knowledge and doubt – can we be certain of anything, and what counts as good evidence? |
- Good, evil and suffering – why do people do wrong, and how should we respond to suffering? |
- Free will and determinism – are our choices really ours? |
- Identity and the self – what makes you the same person over time?
- Justice and rights – what does a fair society owe its members? |
- Religion and belief – what reasons are offered for and against belief in God? |
A good habit is to keep one page per topic in your notebook, with three columns: key terms, arguments for, and arguments against.
10. Building a Philosophical Vocabulary |
Philosophy is a technical subject, and precise words earn marks. Learning twenty core terms properly in Year 7 will make Year 10 and Year 11 far easier.
- Premise – a reason given in support of a conclusion. |
- Conclusion – the claim an argument is trying to establish. |
- Valid – the conclusion follows necessarily from the premises. |
- Sound – valid and with all premises true. |
- Counterexample – a case that shows a general claim to be false. |
- Empirical – based on observation or experience. |
- Rational – based on reason rather than emotion or custom. |
- Normative – about how things ought to be, not how they are.
- Paradox – a set of claims that seem true but cannot all be true together. |
- Dilemma – a choice between two options, both of which have costs. |
Write each term on a card with a definition, an example, and one sentence using it in an argument. Vocabulary learned in context sticks far better than vocabulary copied from a glossary.
11. Assessment, Marking and Common Challenges |
At GCSE, philosophy and ethics questions are marked against two assessment objectives: knowledge and understanding of beliefs and arguments, and the ability to analyse and evaluate them. The two are usually weighted roughly equally, which is why a purely descriptive answer cannot reach the top band.
Typical question formats include short three-mark questions asking you to describe or explain, six-mark questions requiring explanation with reasons, and longer twelve-mark questions that demand a balanced discussion and a justified conclusion.
The most common challenges in Year 7, and how to handle them, are listed below.
- Writing too little – aim for one clear sentence per mark available, plus your evaluation. |
- Describing instead of evaluating – always add 'however', 'this is convincing because' or 'a weakness of this view is'.
- Fear of giving the wrong answer – philosophy rewards well-reasoned answers, not secret correct ones. |
- Confusing opinion with argument – an opinion needs reasons and evidence behind it
