1. Introduction to Cells |
Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms. Some living things, like bacteria, are made of just one cell and are called unicellular organisms. Others, including humans, plants and animals, are multicellular, containing many millions of cells that work together. All cells share certain features: they are surrounded by a cell membrane, contain genetic material, and carry out life processes such as respiration and growth. The idea that all living things are made of cells is a central principle of biology known as cell theory.
, and calculate magnification. Magnification = eyepiece lens magnification × objective lens magnification. For example, with a 10× eyepiece and a 40× objective, the total magnification is 400×.
2. Animal and Plant Cells |
Although animal and plant cells share common structures, they also have distinct differences. Both cell types contain a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes. The nucleus controls the cell's activities and stores genetic information (DNA). The cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance where chemical reactions happen. Mitochondria are the sites of aerobic respiration, releasing energy for the cell. Ribosomes make proteins.
Plant cells, however, have three additional structures not found in animal cells: a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, which provides support; a large permanent vacuole filled with cell sap, which helps maintain turgor; and chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll and enable photosynthesis. The following table summarises the key differences.
| Structure | Animal Cell | Plant Cell |
|---|---|---|
| Nucleus | Present | Present |
| Cytoplasm | Present | Present |
| Cell membrane | Present | Present |
| Mitochondria | Present | Present |
| Ribosomes | Present | Present |
| Cell wall | Absent | Present (cellulose) |
| Chloroplasts | Absent | Present |
| Permanent vacuole | Absent (may have small temporary vacuoles) | Large, permanent |
3. Specialised Cells |
In multicellular organisms, cells often become specialised to perform specific functions. This process is called differentiation. A specialised cell has a particular shape, size and subcellular structures that make it well adapted for its job. For example, a red blood cell has no nucleus to maximise space for haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen. It also has a biconcave disc shape to increase surface area for oxygen absorption.
Other examples include nerve cells (neurones), which are long and have branched endings to transmit electrical impulses over long distances; sperm cells, which have a streamlined head and a tail (flagellum) for swimming to the egg; root hair cells in plants, which have a long extension to absorb water and minerals from the soil; and palisade cells, packed with chloroplasts for photosynthesis. Understanding how structure relates to function is a key theme in Biology.
4. Levels of Organisation |
organs → organ systems → organism. A tissue is a group of similar cells working together to perform a common function. For instance, muscle tissue is made of muscle cells that contract to produce movement. An organ is formed from two or more different tissues working together; the stomach contains muscle tissue for churning, glandular tissue for producing enzymes, and epithelial tissue to line its surface.
Organ systems are groups of organs that coordinate to carry out major body functions. The digestive system, for example, includes the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver and pancreas, all working together to break down and absorb nutrients. The circulatory system transports substances around the body, while the respiratory system exchanges gases. Recognising these levels helps you appreciate how your body is a highly organised and interconnected machine.
5. The Skeletal and Muscular Systems |
The human skeleton provides support, protects vital organs and allows movement. Bones are made of living tissue and store minerals like calcium. The skeleton works together with muscles at joints to create movement. Muscles are attached to bones by tough cords called tendons. When a muscle contracts (shortens), it pulls on a bone, causing movement. Muscles can only pull, not push, so they often work in antagonistic pairs, such as the biceps and triceps in the upper arm.
At a joint, the ends of bones are covered with smooth cartilage, which reduces friction. Synovial fluid inside the joint capsule lubricates the joint. Ligaments hold bones together and prevent dislocation. Key joints to know include hinge joints (elbow, knee) and ball-and-socket joints (shoulder, hip). Regular exercise strengthens both bones and muscles, while a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D supports healthy bone development.
6. Nutrition and a Balanced Diet |
A balanced diet provides all the essential nutrients in the right amounts to maintain good health. The major nutrient groups are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids (fats), vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and water. Carbohydrates are the body's main energy source. Proteins are needed for growth and repair of tissues. Lipids provide a long-term energy store and insulation. Vitamins and minerals are required in smaller quantities but are crucial for processes such as bone formation (calcium) and immune function (vitamin C).
Dietary fibre, found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, helps keep the digestive system moving and prevents constipation. Water is a vital solvent and transport medium, as well as helping to regulate body temperature. An unbalanced diet can lead to deficiency diseases, such as scurvy (lack of vitamin C) or rickets (lack of vitamin D or calcium). Energy is measured in kilojoules (kJ) or kilocalories (kcal), and the amount you need depends on age, sex and activity level.
7. The Digestive System |
Digestion is the breakdown of large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the blood. This happens in the digestive system, also known as the alimentary canal. Mechanical digestion starts in the mouth, where teeth cut and grind food, increasing its surface area. Saliva contains enzymes that begin the chemical digestion of starch into sugars. The food then travels down the oesophagus to the stomach.
In the stomach, food is churned with gastric juices containing protease enzymes and hydrochloric acid, which kills bacteria. The partly digested food then passes into the small intestine, where most chemical digestion occurs. Enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver (stored in the gallbladder) help break down fats. Bile emulsifies fats, turning large globules into smaller droplets to increase the surface area for lipase enzymes to work. The small, soluble products of digestion — glucose, amino acids, fatty acids and glycerol — are absorbed through the wall of the small intestine into the bloodstream.
The remaining undigested material moves into the large intestine, where water and minerals are absorbed. The leftover waste forms faeces, which are stored in the rectum and expelled through the anus. The entire system is adapted to maximise the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, with the small intestine having a large surface area due to millions of villi.
8. Breathing and Gas Exchange |
Breathing (ventilation) is the physical process of moving air into and out of the lungs. Gas exchange, on the other hand, is the movement of oxygen from the air into the blood, and carbon dioxide from the blood into the air. This occurs in the lungs, which contain millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli provide an enormous surface area, have very thin walls (one cell thick) and are surrounded by a dense network of capillaries. These features allow rapid diffusion of gases.
When you inhale, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, and the intercostal muscles contract to raise the rib cage. This increases the volume of the chest cavity, lowering the pressure inside, so air rushes in. During exhalation, these muscles relax, the volume decreases, pressure increases, and air is pushed out. The oxygen you breathe in is used by cells for aerobic respiration, a process that releases energy from glucose. Carbon dioxide, a waste product, is then exhaled.
9. Reproduction in Plants |
Flowering plants reproduce sexually through their flowers. The male parts are the stamen, consisting of anther (which produces pollen grains) and filament. The female parts make up the carpel, which includes the stigma (sticky top), style and ovary (containing ovules). Pollination is the transfer of pollen from an anther to a stigma. It can be carried out by wind, insects or other animals. When a pollen grain lands on a compatible stigma, it grows a pollen tube down the style to the ovary.
Fertilisation occurs when a male gamete (inside the pollen tube) fuses with a female gamete (egg cell) inside the ovule. This forms a zygote, which develops into an embryo plant. The ovule becomes a seed, and the ovary develops into a fruit. Fruits help with seed dispersal, often using wind, water or animals. Seeds contain a food store and a protective coat, allowing them to survive until conditions are right for germination. Conditions needed for germination include water, oxygen and a suitable temperature.
10. Ecosystems and Food Chains |
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (biotic factors) interacting with their non-living environment (abiotic factors), such as light, water, temperature and soil. Every organism in an ecosystem has a role: producers (mainly green plants and algae) make their own food using sunlight through photosynthesis. Consumers eat other organisms; primary consumers eat producers, secondary consumers eat primary consumers, and so on. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down dead material, returning nutrients to the soil.
each step (trophic level), energy is lost through movement, heat and waste, so food chains rarely have more than four or five levels. A food web consists of many interconnected food chains, showing a more realistic picture of feeding relationships in an ecosystem. Changes in one population, such as a decrease in producers, can affect all other organisms in the web.
11. Classification of Living Things |
Biologists classify living organisms to make it easier to study and understand the diversity of life. The modern classification system separates living things into five kingdoms: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists and Prokaryotes (bacteria). Within each kingdom, organisms are further grouped based on shared characteristics, from broad to specific: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. The scientific name of a species uses the binomial system: Genus name with a capital letter, followed by species name in lower case, both written in italics (e.g. Homo sapiens).
Classification relies on observing key features. Animals are multicellular, heterotrophic, and usually able to move. Plants are multicellular autotrophs with cellulose cell walls. Fungi are heterotrophs with cell walls made of chitin and reproduce using spores. Protists are mostly unicellular eukaryotes, such as amoeba. Prokaryotes are single-celled organisms without a true nucleus. Within the animal kingdom, vertebrates can be further divided into five classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, each with distinct characteristics like body covering, reproduction method and thermoregulation.
12. Scientific Enquiry Skills |
In Year 7 Biology, you will develop essential practical and investigative skills. This includes planning experiments, making observations, collecting data, and drawing conclusions. You will learn to identify variables: the independent variable (what you change), the dependent variable (what you measure), and control variables (what you keep the same). A fair test is one in which only the independent variable affects the dependent variable. You should also learn to make predictions and write a clear hypothesis.
Recording results in tables, plotting graphs (such as bar charts or line graphs) and interpreting trends are key mathematical skills in science. You must use appropriate units. When drawing line graphs, remember to label axes, choose a linear scale, and draw a line of best fit if appropriate. Safety in the laboratory is paramount: always listen to instructions, wear safety goggles when using chemicals or Bunsen burners, and never eat or drink in the lab. By practicing these enquiry skills, you become not just a learner of Biology but an active scientist.
