📚 Year 7 AQA Statistics: Key Points for Practical Assessments | 7年级AQA统计:实践考核要点
Practical assessments in Year 7 Statistics test your ability to design, carry out and evaluate a complete statistical investigation. You have to collect data, present it clearly in tables and graphs, calculate sensible summary values, and draw sensible conclusions that link back to what you set out to find. Marks are given for the quality of your reasoning as much as for the numbers you produce, so it is worth knowing exactly what examiners look for at each stage of the process.
1. Defining a Clear Aim |
Always start by stating a clear aim for your investigation. For example: "To investigate whether boys in Year 7 are taller than girls." A focused aim guides your entire project and tells the reader exactly what your data is supposed to answer.
Your aim should be a simple statement that tells the reader what you are trying to find out and why it is interesting. Avoid aims that are too broad, such as "to investigate height", because you will not be able to collect enough data to answer them properly.
2. Formulating a Hypothesis |
A hypothesis is an educated guess about what you expect to find. It is often written as an "If... then..." statement. For instance: "If we compare heights, then boys will be taller on average." A good hypothesis is testable with the data you can realistically collect in a lesson or two.
Your investigation will then test this hypothesis. You do not need to be right; it is about testing your idea fairly. Writing a prediction you later reject is perfectly good statistics, as long as your method was sound and your conclusion is supported by the evidence.
3. Identifying Variables |
Every statistical investigation involves variables. The independent variable is the one you choose to change or compare - for example, gender in the height investigation. The dependent variable is the one you measure, such as height in centimetres.
Control variables are the things you keep the same so that your comparison is fair. In the height example you would control the year group, the measuring method and the time of day, because people are slightly taller in the morning than in the evening.
If you ignore control variables, your results may show a difference that has nothing to do with your independent variable. Examiners look for a sentence in your plan that names at least two control variables and explains why each one matters.
4. Planning Your Data Collection |
Decide whether you need primary data, which you collect yourself, or secondary data, which comes from a published source such as a school database or a website. Primary data is more reliable because you know how it was collected, but it takes time; secondary data is quick but may be out of date or collected for a different purpose.
Identify the population you are studying - all Year 7 pupils in your school, for example - and then choose a sample, which is the smaller group you actually measure. A sample of at least 30 values is usually needed before a comparison between two groups becomes meaningful.
Finally, plan the practical details: where you will stand, what equipment you need, such as a tape measure, tally chart or stopwatch, and how many readings you can realistically take in the time available.
5. Sampling Methods and Avoiding Bias |
Bias is the biggest trap in practical work. If you only ask your friends, or stand by the canteen door and pick people who look tall, your sample is biased and your conclusion cannot be trusted. A biased sample does not represent the population.
A simple random sample gives every member of the population an equal chance of being chosen; you could number every Year 7 pupil and use a random number generator. Systematic sampling picks every 10th name on a list. Stratified sampling splits the population into groups, called strata, such as tutor groups or gender, and takes a number from each group in proportion to its size. Opportunity sampling, simply asking whoever is nearby, is quick but usually biased.
In your write-up, name the sampling method you used and give one reason why it is fairer than the method you rejected.
6. Types of Data |
You must be able to classify the data you collect, because the type of data decides which chart and which average you should use. Qualitative, or categorical, data describes a quality, such as favourite sport or eye colour. Quantitative data involves numbers and is either discrete, meaning it can only take particular values, or continuous, meaning it can take any value in a range.
| Type of data
Meaning
Examples
| Qualitative (categorical)
Describes a quality, not a number
Favourite subject, eye colour
| Discrete quantitative
Number of siblings, goals scored
| Continuous quantitative
Measured, any value in a range
Height in cm, time in seconds
If you treat continuous data as if it were categorical, for example by grouping heights into "tall" and "short", you lose information and limit what you can calculate later.
7. Designing a Data Collection Sheet |
Design a clear recording sheet with column headings and units before you collect anything. Each time you record a value, add a tally mark in the tally column, and count the marks in fives at the end to give the frequency. A tidy sheet saves time and reduces copying errors.
ne class, so using the symbols ≤ and < is the safest habit. Keep the class widths equal unless you have a good reason not to.
Add a total row at the bottom of your table. Checking that the frequencies add up to your sample size is the quickest way to catch a lost or double-counted value.
8. Presenting Data in Charts and Graphs |
Choose the chart that suits the data. A bar chart or pie chart shows qualitative or discrete data, with a bar chart best for comparing categories and a pie chart best for showing proportions. A line graph shows how a value changes over time. A scatter graph shows whether two variables are related.
A histogram shows continuous data, especially when class widths are unequal. Because the columns have different widths, you must plot frequency density rather than frequency on the vertical axis.
Frequency density = frequency ÷ class width
Every graph needs a title, labelled axes with units, and a sensible scale. If two people cannot read your graph without asking a question, it is not finished yet.
9. Averages and Range |
The mode is the most common value and is the only average you can use for qualitative data. The median is the middle value once the data is in order, and it is not affected by extreme values. The mean uses every value in the data set, which makes it the most informative average but also the one most easily distorted by outliers.
Mean = Σx ÷ n
The range is the largest value minus the smallest value, and it gives a simple measure of spread. Always compare two groups using both an average and the range; otherwise you can describe the typical value but not how consistent the data is.
| Average
How to find it 如何求得 |
Use it when 适用情形 |
| Median 中位数 | Middle value in order 排序后的中间值 | Data with outliers 含异常值的数据 |
10. Drawing Conclusions |
Your conclusion must answer your original aim and refer back to your hypothesis. Use the calculated values as evidence: for example, "the mean height of boys was 152 cm compared with 148 cm for girls, so the hypothesis is supported".
Never claim more than your data shows. Saying "boys are always taller" is wrong, because several girls in the sample may be taller than several boys. Also remember that a relationship between two variables does not prove that one causes the other; always look for a third factor before using the word "cause".
Finish with one sentence about how confident you are, given the size and quality of your sample.
11. Evaluating the Investigation |
Evaluation means judging how good your own work was. Reliability improves when you repeat the measurements or increase the sample size, because one odd reading matters less in a larger set. Validity asks whether you actually measured what you intended to measure - if pupils kept their shoes on, your height data is not strictly valid.
Bias affects whether your sample truly represents the population. Ask yourself who was left out, whether the time of day changed your results, and whether anyone refused to take part.
Then suggest concrete improvements for next time: use a random sample from the full register, measure at the same time of day, take 50 readings instead of 20, or record heights to the nearest 0.5 cm rather than to the nearest whole centimetre.
12. Common Pitfalls and a Final Checklist |
Most lost marks in practical assessments come from a small number of repeated mistakes. Check your own work against each one before you hand it in.
- Forgetting to give units, or measuring in cm and then comparing in m.
- Not labelling the axes or leaving out the scale on a graph.
- Using a pie chart for continuous data, or joining up the points on a bar chart.
- Choosing a biased sample, such as your own
