1. Basic Stage Positions |
When you step onto a stage, you need to name the spaces correctly. Upstage is the area furthest from the audience, while downstage is the closest. Centre stage sits exactly in the middle. Stage left and stage right are always given from the actor's point of view, looking out at the audience.
Wings are the hidden side spaces where actors wait before entering. The apron is the part of the stage floor that extends in front of the main curtain. A proscenium arch is the frame that separates the auditorium from the stage in a traditional theatre.
Not all stages sit behind an arch. A thrust stage juts out so the audience wraps around three sides. Theatre in the round has spectators on every side. A traverse stage places the audience along two long edges, with the performance between them.
圆形剧场(Theatre in the round) 则四面皆是观众。
2. Vocal Skills |
Your voice is a powerful tool. Pitch refers to how high or low you sound. Pace is the speed of your speech, and a deliberate pause can build moment. Volume controls whether you are loud or quiet, while projection means using your breath to fill the space without shouting.
Tone adds emotion — a warm tone might suggest kindness, a sharp tone anger. Intonation is the musical rise and fall of your voice; monotone can sound boring. Your accent reveals where a character might come from.
Clear speaking is called good articulation or diction. It means shaping every consonant and vowel so the audience understands each word. Practice tongue twisters to improve this skill.
3. Physical Skills |
Your body communicates even before you speak. Posture is how you hold your spine and shoulders; a slumped posture can show old age or sadness. Gesture uses hands and arms to emphasise meaning, while facial expression brings the eyes, mouth and forehead alive.
Eye contact creates connection or shows authority. Body language is the unspoken signal you send through position and movement. A character's walk is called their gait, and even a subtle change of speed tells a story.
Levels describe being high (standing on a box), medium or low (crouching). Proxemics is the distance between performers; standing close suggests intimacy, while distance can show coldness. Stillness is a deliberate pause in movement and can be extremely powerful.
