1. Understanding the Essay Question |
Before you start writing, read the question carefully. Look for command words such as 'describe', 'explain', 'compare', or 'evaluate'. The question will also mention one or more musical elements: melody, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, instrumentation, texture, or structure. Highlight these keywords and plan your answer around them.
Command words tell you how much detail is needed. 'Describe' asks what the music does; 'explain' asks how and why it has that effect; 'compare' asks for similarities and differences; 'evaluate' asks for a judgement supported by evidence.
| Command word | What it asks you to do | 指令词 |
| Describe | State clearly what you hear, using musical terms. | |
| Explain | Say how and why the effect is created. | |
| Compare | Give similarities and differences. | |
| Evaluate | Make a judgement and justify it. |
2. The Basic Essay Structure |
A well-organised music essay has three main parts: an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The introduction sets out your main idea and the musical elements you will discuss. Each body paragraph focuses on one element, providing specific examples from the music. The conclusion sums up your arguments and gives a final judgement.
Introduction + Body Paragraphs + Conclusion = Complete Music Essay
A simple planning grid keeps you on track. Aim for four or five body paragraphs, and give each one a single clear focus so that your writing never becomes a list of unconnected facts.
- Paragraph 1: Melody and pitch |
- Paragraph 2: Rhythm, tempo and metre |
- Paragraph 3: Dynamics and articulation |
- Paragraph 4: Instrumentation and texture |
- Paragraph 5: Structure and form |
3. Writing an Introduction | 写引言
Your introduction should begin by naming the piece and composer. Next, state the overall mood or character of the music, directly addressing the question. Finally, briefly mention the key musical elements you will explore, such as 'This essay will examine how rhythm, dynamics, and instrumentation contribute to the dramatic effect.'
A useful opening template is: 'Composer's piece (year) creates a mood atmosphere. This essay will examine how element 1, element 2 and element 3 combine to produce this effect.' Three sentences are enough - keep the introduction short so that you have time and space for the analysis.
4. Describing Melody |
Melody refers to the tune or main musical line. When analysing melody, comment on its pitch (high or low), its shape or contour (ascending, descending, arch-shaped), and the size of the intervals - stepwise (conjunct) movement creates a smooth line, while leaps (disjunct movement) sound more dramatic or angular.
You should also identify devices such as repetition, sequence (a phrase repeated at a higher or lower pitch), ostinato (a repeated pattern), and ornamentation (trills, turns and grace notes). Mention the range of the melody and whether it uses major, minor or modal tonality.
A strong analytical sentence links the device to its effect: 'The melody rises by step in a sequence, which makes it sound hopeful and pushes the music forwards.' Weak versions begin with 'It sounds nice' or 'It is catchy' - these earn no marks.
5. Analysing Rhythm, Tempo and Metre |
Rhythm is the pattern of long and short notes. Tempo is the speed of the music, usually described with Italian terms such as Adagio (slow), Andante (walking pace), Allegro (fast) and Presto (very fast). Metre is the number of beats in each bar - duple, triple or quadruple, either simple or compound.
速度是音乐的快慢,通常用意大利语术语表示,如Adagio(慢板)、Andante(行板,如行走的速度)、Allegro(快板)和Presto(急板)。
Look out for syncopation (accents on off-beats), dotted rhythms, triplets, and irregular metres such as 5/4. Also note changes of tempo, including accelerando (getting faster) and rallentando (gradually slowing), and rubato, where the performer stretches the timing expressively.
还要留意速度变化,包括accelerando(渐快)和rallentando(渐慢),以及rubato(自由速度),即演奏者富有表现力地伸缩时值。
Rhythm is often the most rewarding element to analyse because it has such a strong effect on the listener: a steady, repetitive rhythm can feel like marching or machinery, while a free, flexible rhythm can feel like speech or dance.
6. Dynamics and Articulation |
Dynamics describe how loud or quiet the music is, from ppp (very quiet) to fff (very loud). They also include gradual changes - crescendo (getting louder) and diminuendo (getting quieter) - and sudden changes such as subito piano or sforzando, which create shock or surprise.
力度描述音乐的强弱,从ppp(极弱)到fff(极强)。力度还包括渐变——crescendo(渐强)和diminuendo(渐弱)——以及subito piano(突弱)或sforzando(突强)这类突变,用以制造震惊或意外效果。
Articulation describes how individual notes are played. Staccato notes are short and detached, legato notes are smooth and connected, accents and marcato markings add attack, and pizzicato (plucked strings) or col legno (playing with the wood of the bow) create sharp or eerie colours.
staccato(断奏)音短促分离,legato(连奏)音平滑连贯,重音和marcato(加重)标记增加冲击力,而pizzicato(拨弦)或col legno(用弓杆敲弦)则营造尖锐或诡异的色彩。
Always link dynamics to meaning: 'The crescendo from pp to ff turns a quiet march into an overwhelming threat' is far better than 'The music gets louder.'
7. Instrumentation and Texture |
Instrumentation means which instruments are played and how they are used. Name the families - strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard - and note any solo instruments. Also comment on timbre or sonority: the same melody sounds completely different on an oboe, a trumpet or a cello.
Texture describes how many layers of sound there are and how they relate. Monophonic means one line only, homophonic means a melody with chords, and polyphonic means several independent lines. Unison, octaves, imitation, canon and counterpoint are other useful texture labels.
monophonic(单声部)只有一条线,homophonic(主调音乐)是旋律加和弦,polyphonic(复调)是若干独立线条。unison(同度齐奏)、octaves(八度)、imitation(模仿)、canon(卡农)和counterpoint(对位)也是常用的织体标签。
Textures can change within a piece. A movement might open with a thin, monophonic ostinato and build into a dense, layered climax - saying where and why the texture changes shows real understanding.
8. Structure and Form |
Structure is the overall plan of a piece. Common forms include binary (AB), ternary (ABA), rondo (ABACA), strophic, verse and chorus, sonata form, ground bass with variations, 12-bar blues, and through-composed music with no repeated sections.
When you write about structure, use time references: 'At the opening...', 'In the second section...', 'Towards the end...' Then describe the transition itself - a key change, a change of texture, or a new rhythmic idea - because transitions are where the examiner is most impressed.
A confident sentence might read: 'After the third statement of the ostinato, the texture suddenly thins to solo woodwind, creating a moment of stillness before the final climax.' This combines structure, texture and dynamics in one observation.
9. Using Musical Terminology Accurately |
Every paragraph should use at least three precise musical terms, and each term should be explained in context. Spelling counts: 'crescendo', 'ostinato', 'polyphonic' and 'pizzicato' must be written correctly, and Italian terms are usually italicised.
Use the PEEL pattern to build each body paragraph: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. The point states your idea, the evidence quotes a musical detail, the explanation says what effect it creates, and the link connects back to the question.
用PEEL结构来构建每个主体段落:Point(观点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)、Link(呼应)。
Point + Evidence + Explanation + Link = One Strong Paragraph
Avoid vague adjectives such as 'good', 'bad', 'sad' or 'interesting' unless you immediately justify them with musical evidence. Vague words show that you can hear something; precise words show that you understand it.
10. Writing the Conclusion | 写结论
The conclusion should not repeat the introduction word for word. Instead, summarise your main arguments briefly, then answer the question directly with a final judgement. If the question asked how the composer creates a dramatic effect, say clearly which element you think is most important and why.
Two or three confident sentences are enough. A good closing line might be: 'Ultimately, it is the relentless 5/4 ostinato that holds the movement together, and every other element - dynamics, instrumentation and texture - is built on top of it.'
11. Model Answer: 'Mars, the Bringer of War' |
Title: How does Holst create a menacing atmosphere in 'Mars, the Bringer of War'? |
Introduction: 'Mars, the Bringer of War' is the first movement of Gustav Holst's orchestral suite The Planets, completed in 1916. The movement creates a menacing, unstoppable atmosphere, and this essay will examine how rhythm, dynamics and instrumentation combine to produce that effect.
Body 1 - Rhythm: Rhythm is the most important element in creating the menace. The movement is in 5/4 time, an irregular metre that never feels settled, and the opening ostinato repeats a short, aggressive rhythmic pattern in the lower strings, harps and percussion. Because the pattern repeats without a break, it sounds like an army marching, and the listener is never allowed to relax.
Body 2 - Dynamics: Dynamics reinforce this sense of threat. The movement begins very quietly at pp and builds through long crescendos to a brutal fff, so the volume itself feels like an approaching enemy. Holst also uses sudden subito changes of dynamic, which make the music sound unpredictable and violent.
