1. What is Biology? |
Biology is the study of living organisms and life processes. It explores how plants, animals, and microorganisms function, grow, and interact with their environment. In Year 7, you will start with the basics: cells, human biology, and ecology.
All living things share seven life processes: movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition (often remembered as MRS GREN).
Understanding these processes helps you classify something as living or non‑living. For example, a car moves and uses fuel, but it does not grow or reproduce, so it is not alive.
2. Introduction to Cells |
Cells are the building blocks of life. Every organism is made of cells, which carry out all life functions. There are two main types: plant cells and animal cells. Both share common parts like the nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane, while plant cells have extra structures such as a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large central vacuole.
The nucleus controls the cell's activities and contains genetic material. The cytoplasm is a jelly‑like substance where chemical reactions happen. The cell membrane controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Plant cells have chloroplasts that absorb light for photosynthesis, and a rigid cell wall made of cellulose for support. They also store water in a large vacuole.
3. Using a Microscope |
To observe cells, you need a microscope. In Year 7, you will learn to use a light microscope safely and correctly. A microscope magnifies tiny objects, making the invisible visible.
Key parts include the eyepiece lens, objective lenses, stage, and focus knobs. You start with the lowest power objective lens, use the coarse focus first, then fine focus to get a sharp image.
When preparing a slide, you place the specimen on a glass slide, add a drop of water, and cover with a coverslip at an angle to avoid air bubbles. Always handle the microscope with care.
4. Levels of Organisation |
→ organs → organ systems → organism. Understanding this hierarchy is essential in biology.
A tissue is a group of similar cells performing the same function, like muscle tissue. An organ is made of different tissues working together, such as the heart. Organ systems, like the circulatory system, group several organs.
In plants, for example, the leaf is an organ containing epidermal tissue, palisade mesophyll and vascular tissue, all combining to capture light and make food.
5. The Skeletal and Muscular Systems |
Your skeleton provides support, protects internal organs, and allows movement by working with muscles. Bones are living tissues that grow and repair themselves. The human skeleton contains over 200 bones.
Joints are places where bones meet. Some joints, like the knee and elbow, are hinge joints allowing movement in one direction. Others, like the shoulder, are ball‑and‑socket joints for a wider range of motion.
Muscles contract and relax to pull on bones. They work in antagonistic pairs: for example, the biceps contract while the triceps relax to bend the arm. Ligaments connect bones, and tendons connect muscle to bone.
6. Nutrition and Digestion |
A balanced diet provides the nutrients your body needs: carbohydrates for energy, proteins for growth and repair, fats for insulation and energy storage, vitamins and minerals for health, fibre for digestion, and water. A deficiency in any nutrient can cause health
