📚 Year 7 AQA Biology: Unit Test Mock Paper Analysis | 七年级AQA生物:单元测试模拟卷解析
This article works through a typical Year 7 AQA Biology unit test mock paper , providing answers and detailed explanations for each question by question, giving the answers alongside the thinking behind every mark. The aim is to help students spot the traps that cost marks most often and to reinforce key concepts from the key ideas of the KS3 programme of study: cells, classification, adaptations, ecosystems and life processes.
1. Inside the Mock Paper: Structure and Assessment Objectives |
A Year 7 AQA Biology unit test usually lasts 40 to 60 minutes and carries between 40 and 60 marks. It is normally split into three sections: short recall questions, structured questions based on diagrams or tables, and one longer six-mark question that requires extended writing. The content is drawn from the AQA KS3 science syllabus, where Year 7 biology units typically cover cells and organisation, the human body, reproduction, ecosystems and the basics of photosynthesis and respiration.
The paper is written against three assessment objectives. AO1 tests recall of facts and definitions, AO2 tests application to unfamiliar diagrams or data, and AO3 tests analysis and evaluation, such as explaining a trend or suggesting an improvement to an experiment. Knowing which objective a question targets tells you how much detail to write.
| Cells and cell structure |
| Organisation and specialised cells |
| Classification and keys |
| Adaptations |
| Ecosystems and food chains |
| Life processes and respiration |
The table above is a useful revision guide: if a topic rarely carries more than four marks, do not spend a whole evening on it. Allocate revision time in proportion to the marks it can earn.
2. Question 1 Revisited: The Animal Cell |
Question: A diagram of an animal cell shows three parts labelled A, B and C. Part A is the control centre containing genetic material; Part B is a jelly-like substance where chemical reactions occur; Part C is a thin outer layer that controls what enters and leaves the cell. Name parts A, B and C.
Answer: A = nucleus, B = cytoplasm, C = cell membrane.
The nucleus stores DNA on chromosomes and directs protein synthesis. Cytoplasm fills the cell and is where most metabolic reactions, such as respiration, take place. The cell membrane is selectively permeable – it allows some substances to pass through but not others.
A common error is to label a cell wall. Animal cells do not have a cell wall; they are surrounded only by a cell membrane, which makes them flexible. Examiners also accept "partially permeable" but not "permeable" alone, because a fully permeable membrane would let everything through and the cell could not control its internal environment.
Two further structures are worth naming in a longer answer. Mitochondria are the site of aerobic respiration and release energy for the cell, while ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis. In an animal cell these are not usually visible on a simple school diagram, but naming them correctly in a six-mark question can gain credit.
3. Plant Cells and the Comparison Table |
Plant cells contain everything an animal cell has, plus three additional structures: a cell wall made of cellulose, a permanent vacuole filled with cell sap, and chloroplasts containing the green pigment chlorophyll. The cell wall provides support and shape, the vacuole keeps the cell firm, and the chloroplasts absorb light energy for photosynthesis.
| Permanent vacuole | 永久液泡 | No | 无 | Yes | 有 |
| Chloroplasts | 叶绿体 | No | 无 | In green parts only | 仅绿色部位有 |
Note the qualification in the last row: root cells of a plant are plant cells but contain no chloroplasts, because no light reaches them. A question that shows a root cell diagram and asks "why are there no chloroplasts?" is testing exactly this point, and the full-mark answer must mention the absence of light, not simply "roots do not need them".
The commonest error in this section is confusing the cell wall with the cell membrane, or writing that the cell wall "controls what enters the cell". Only the membrane does that. The wall is fully permeable and simply gives strength and support.
4. Question 2 Revisited: Magnification with a Microscope |
Question: g an eyepiece lens of ×10 and an objective lens of ×40. Calculate the total magnification.
Answer: Total magnification = eyepiece magnification × objective magnification = 10 × 40 = 400×.
The formula should be memorised exactly as written:
Total magnification = eyepiece magnification × objective magnification
nification, the actual size is 20 ÷ 400 = 0.05 mm, which converts to 50 μm. Remember the conversions: 1 cm = 10 mm and 1 mm = 1 000 μm, so 0.05 mm = 50 μm.
Practical questions about the microscope itself are also common. A student preparing an onion epidermis slide should peel a thin layer, place it flat on the slide, add a drop of iodine solution to stain the cell nuclei, lower a coverslip slowly at an angle to avoid air bubbles, and start focusing on the lowest power objective before switching to a higher one.
swer in cm when μm is required) and forgetting to include the multiplication sign, so that "400" is written instead of "400×". Both are avoidable and both lose the mark.
5. Specialised Cells and Levels of Organisation |
A specialised cell has a shape and set of features that suit one particular job. Red blood cells have no nucleus, giving more room for haemoglobin to carry oxygen, and a biconcave shape that increases surface area. Nerve cells are long so that they can carry electrical impulses over distance. Sperm cells have a tail for swimming and many mitochondria to release the energy needed.
In plants, the root hair cell has a long, thin extension that greatly increases the surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions, while the palisade mesophyll cell is packed with chloroplasts and positioned near the top of the leaf to absorb as much light as possible.
The levels of organisation run in a fixed order and examiners expect the exact sequence:
- Cell → tissue → organ → organ system → organism |
- Example: muscle cell → muscle tissue → heart → circulatory system → human |
- Example: palisade cell → mesophyll tissue → leaf → shoot system → plant |
A frequent mistake is to jump straight from organ to organism, missing out the organ system. Another is to confuse "tissue" with "organ" by defining a tissue as "a group of organs", which reverses the hierarchy. Learn one clear example of each level and draw it as a ladder in your notes.
6. Classification: Vertebrates, Invertebrates and Keys |
Classification groups organisms by shared features. The five vertebrate groups are fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, and each has a set of distinguishing characteristics that a question may ask you to identify from a photograph or a description.
| Mammals | 哺乳动物 | Fur or hair, mammary glands, live young | 毛发、乳腺、多数胎生 |
Invertebrates lack a backbone and include insects, arachnids, crustaceans, molluscs and annelids. Insects have six legs and three body sections; arachnids have eight legs and two body sections. This distinction appears in almost every Year 7 paper, and the mark is usually given only if the number of legs is stated.
Living things are named using the binomial system: a genus name followed by a species name, both italicised, with the genus capitalised, for example Homo sapiens or Panthera leo. To identify an unknown organism, biologists use a dichotomous key, in which each step offers two choices that are mutually exclusive. When writing your own key, use observable features such as "has wings" or "has four legs" rather than vague statements such as "looks large".
7. Adaptations to Environment |
An adaptation is a feature that increases an organism's chance of survival in its habitat. Adaptations are usually grouped into structural (body shape), behavioural (what the organism does) and functional (how the body works), and exam answers are often marked for naming the type correctly.
A polar bear has thick white fur for insulation and camouflage, a thick layer of blubber, a small surface area to volume ratio that reduces heat loss, and wide paws that spread its weight on snow and help it swim. A camel stores fat in its hump rather than as a body layer, produces concentrated urine, and has wide feet that stop it sinking into sand.
A cactus has spines instead of leaves, which reduces water loss and deters animals; a thick waxy cuticle; and a swollen green stem that stores water and carries out photosynthesis. Its shallow, wide-spreading roots absorb water quickly after rain.
