用第二语言撰写学术论文对留学生来说可能颇具挑战。本指南提供从理解作业要求到最终校对的逐步方法,重点关注结构、论证和学术诚信。无论你是准备课程作业还是学位论文,这些策略都将提升你的写作能力,助你取得更高成绩。
1. Understanding the Assignment | 理解作业要求
Every essay starts with a careful reading of the prompt. Highlight directive verbs such as 'analyse', 'discuss', 'evaluate' and 'compare'; these words tell you what kind of thinking the marker expects. Read the question three times - once for the general topic, once for the specific task, and once for the constraints.
每篇论文都始于仔细阅读题目。标记诸如"分析"、"讨论"、"评估"、"比较"之类的指令动词,这些词告诉你阅卷人期待何种思维。把题目读三遍:一遍看总体话题,一遍看具体任务,一遍看限制条件。
Identify the topic scope and any limiting phrases, like 'in the context of', 'with reference to', or 'focusing on'. Misinterpreting one keyword can lead to an off-topic essay, and an off-topic essay is capped by the mark scheme no matter how elegant the prose is.
识别主题范围以及任何限制性短语,如"在……背景下"、"参考"、"聚焦于"。误读一个关键词就可能导致偏题,而偏题论文无论文笔多优美,评分上限都会被压低。
Always review the marking criteria. Understand how marks are allocated for argument, use of sources, structure, and language. This helps you prioritise your effort: if analysis carries 40 per cent of the marks, it deserves roughly 40 per cent of your writing time.
务必查看评分标准。了解论证、文献使用、结构和语言各占多少分,这能帮你合理分配精力:如果分析占 40% 的分数,它就该占用你大约 40% 的写作时间。
| Directive verb | What it requires | 中文说明 |
|---|---|---|
| Analyse | Break the topic into parts and show how they relate | 拆解主题,说明各部分的关联 |
| Discuss | Present multiple perspectives and reach a judgement | 呈现多种观点并给出判断 |
| Evaluate | Weigh strengths and weaknesses against criteria | 依据标准权衡优劣 |
| Compare | Identify similarities and differences, then interpret them | 指出异同并加以阐释 |
| Justify | Give evidence-based reasons for a position | 为立场提供有据可依的理由 |
2. Decoding Essay Types | 解析论文类型
Not all essays work the same way. An argumentative essay demands a contestable claim, whereas an expository essay asks you to explain a concept clearly and neutrally. Recognising the genre tells you what a successful conclusion looks like before you write a single sentence.
并非所有论文的写法都相同。议论文要求提出可被质疑的主张,而说明文则要求你清晰、中立地解释一个概念。认清文体,就等于在动笔之前就知道什么样的结论才算成功。
Compare-and-contrast essays fail most often because students list similarities and differences in separate blocks. Strong answers organise the body by criterion - for example by cost, then by effectiveness, then by equity - and address both subjects within each paragraph.
对比类论文最常见的失败原因,是学生把异同分成两大块罗列。高分答案会按维度组织主体段,例如先比成本,再比效果,最后比公平性,并在每一段中同时讨论两个对象。
Reflective and case-study essays require a different voice. Reflection needs first-person reasoning about your own learning, while a case study needs theoretical framing applied to a real organisation. Check the module handbook for the expected register.
反思性论文与案例研究论文需要不同的语气。反思需要以第一人称论述自己的学习过程,而案例研究则需要把理论框架应用于真实机构。请查阅课程手册,确认预期的写作语域。
3. Research and Note-Taking | 资料检索与笔记
Start with the reading list, then move to subject databases and Google Scholar. Reading lists are curated by your tutor for a reason, and examiners recognise the difference between a student who engaged with the set texts and one who relied on the first three search results.
先读课程书单,再转向学科数据库和 Google Scholar。书单是导师精心挑选的,阅卷人能分辨出哪些学生认真读过指定文献,哪些学生只用了搜索排名前三的结果。
Read strategically. For a journal article, read the abstract, the introduction, and the conclusion first; only then decide whether the middle sections deserve your time. For a book, use the index and chapter summaries rather than reading cover to cover.
要讲策略地阅读。读期刊论文时,先看摘要、引言和结论,再决定中间部分是否值得花时间;读专著时,利用索引和章节摘要,而不是从头读到尾。
Take notes that are usable months later. Record the author, year, page number, and a one-line summary in your own words. If you copy a phrase, put it in quotation marks immediately - a copied sentence without quotation marks is the most common accidental plagiarism.
做能在几个月后仍可用的笔记。记录作者、年份、页码,以及一句用自己的话写的摘要。如果抄录原句,立刻加上引号——未加引号的照抄句,是最常见的无意抄袭。
Evaluate source quality with a simple test: currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. A government report from 2024 may outrank a blog post from 2015 even if the blog post is better written.
用简单标准评估资料质量:时效性、相关性、权威性、准确性、写作目的。一份 2024 年的政府报告,可能比一篇 2015 年写得更好的博客文章更值得引用。
4. Formulating a Thesis Statement | 构建中心论点
A thesis statement is the single sentence that states your position and previews your reasoning. It usually appears at the end of the introduction. Without it, the reader cannot tell whether your body paragraphs are building an argument or simply listing facts.
中心论点句是用一句话表明你的立场并预告论证路径的句子,通常出现在引言末尾。没有它,读者无法判断正文各段是在构建论证,还是仅仅罗列事实。
Thesis = Topic + Stance + Reasons
Weak: 'This essay will discuss renewable energy policy.' Strong: 'Although feed-in tariffs raise short-term consumer costs, they remain the most effective mechanism for accelerating renewable capacity because they reduce investor risk and lock in long-term price certainty.'
弱例子:"本文将讨论可再生能源政策。" 强例子:"尽管上网电价补贴会推高短期消费者成本,但它仍是加速可再生能源装机最有效的机制,因为它降低了投资者风险并锁定了长期价格确定性。"
Test your thesis with two questions. Would a reasonable person disagree with it? Can you support it with evidence available to you? If the answer to either is no, revise it before you draft.
用两个问题检验你的论点:理性的人会不同意它吗?你能用可获取的证据支持它吗?只要有一个答案是否定的,就先修改论点再动笔。
5. Essay Structure: Introduction, Body, Conclusion | 论文结构:引言、主体、结论
The introduction does three jobs: it establishes context, states your thesis, and signals the roadmap of your argument. A useful working ratio is roughly 10 per cent of the word count for the introduction and 10 per cent for the conclusion.
引言承担三项任务:交代背景、提出论点、预告论证路线。一个实用的比例是:引言约占全文 10%,结论也约占 10%。
Body paragraphs should follow a logical order chosen by you, not by the order in which ideas occurred to you. Chronological order suits historical questions, order of importance suits policy arguments, and thematic order suits conceptual essays.
主体段应按照你主动选择的逻辑顺序排列,而不是想到哪写到哪。时间顺序适合历史类问题,重要性顺序适合政策论证,主题顺序适合概念性论述。
The conclusion should restate the thesis in the light of the evidence you presented, synthesise the main threads, and state implications. It must not introduce new evidence, new sources, or a completely new line of argument.
结论应结合你呈现的证据重申论点,综合主要线索,并说明其意义。结论中绝不能引入新证据、新文献或全新的论证方向。
| Section | Function | 中文功能 |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | Context, thesis, roadmap | 背景、论点、路线图 |
| Body | One claim per paragraph, supported by evidence | 每段一个主张,配以证据 |
| Conclusion | Restatement, synthesis, implications | 重申、综合、意义 |
6. Paragraph Craft: The PEEL Model | 段落写作:PEEL 模型
PEEL stands for Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link. The model forces you to explain your evidence rather than dropping a quotation and moving on, which is the single fastest way to lose analysis marks.
PEEL 分别代表观点、证据、解释和衔接。这个模型强迫你解释证据,而不是丢下一句引文就换下一段,而后者是丢掉分析分最快的方式。
Point → Evidence → Explanation → Link
The Point is a topic sentence that states the paragraph claim. The Evidence is a quotation, statistic or finding with a citation. The Explanation unpacks why the evidence supports the claim. The Link connects back to the thesis or forward to the next paragraph.
观点是陈述本段主张的主题句;证据是附有引注的引文、数据或研究发现;解释要说明该证据为何支持这一主张;衔接则把本段与论点或下一段联系起来。
Keep one controlling idea per paragraph. If a paragraph contains two competing claims, it will usually read as two underdeveloped paragraphs and will be marked as such.
每段只保留一个核心主张。如果一段里塞进两个相互竞争的主张,通常会被读成两段不充分的段落,得分也会如此。
- Point: 'The policy failed to reduce emissions in its first three years.' | 观点:"该政策在前三年未能降低排放。"
- Evidence: 'Emissions rose by 2.1 per cent between 2019 and 2022 (Department for Energy, 2023, p. 44).' | 证据:"2019 至 2022 年间排放上升 2.1%(能源部,2023,第 44 页)。"
- Explanation: 'This suggests that the subsidy reached producers too late to alter investment decisions.' | 解释:"这说明补贴到达生产者手中过晚,未能改变其投资决策。"
- Link: 'Yet the same delay may explain why the scheme succeeded in the following period.' | 衔接:"然而同样的滞后,或许也能解释该方案为何在随后一期取得了成效。"
7. Building an Argument and Critical Thinking | 论证构建与批判性思维
An argument consists of a claim, supporting evidence, and a warrant - the reasoning that connects the two. Most student essays state claims and provide evidence but omit the warrant, leaving the reader to guess why the evidence matters.
论证由主张、支撑证据和推理依据构成,其中推理依据是连接前两者的逻辑。多数学生论文只提出主张并给出证据,却省略了推理依据,让读者去猜证据为何重要。
Distinguish description from analysis. Description reports what a source says; analysis explains what that means for your argument, how it compares with other sources, and what it overlooks. A useful check is to count how many sentences begin with a source's name rather than your own reasoning.
要区分描述与分析。描述只是转述文献说了什么,分析则要说明这对你的论证意味着什么、与其他文献相比如何、又忽略了什么。一个实用的自检方法是:数一数有多少句子是以文献名称开头,而不是以你自己的推理开头。
Strong essays address counter-arguments. Concede the strongest opposing point fairly, then explain why your position still holds. This is called concession and rebuttal, and it demonstrates genuine critical engagement rather than one-sided advocacy.
高分论文会处理反方观点。先公正地承认最有力的反对意见,再说明你的立场为何依然成立。这被称为让步与反驳,它体现的是真正的批判性思考,而非一边倒的宣扬。
8. Using Sources and Referencing | 使用文献与引用规范
Integrate sources into your own sentences rather than parking them in the middle of a paragraph. Reporting verbs carry meaning: 'argues' and 'claims' suggest debate, while 'demonstrates' and 'establishes' suggest stronger consensus.
要把文献融入你自己的句子,而不是把引文孤零零地丢在段落中间。转述动词本身带有含义:"argues"和"claims"暗示存在争议,而"demonstrates"和"establishes"则暗示更强的共识。
Use direct quotation sparingly and only when the exact wording matters. Otherwise paraphrase, and cite the page number even when paraphrasing, because markers verify accuracy.
直接引用要少用,只在措辞本身至关重要时才用。其余情况应改述,并且改述时也要标注页码,因为阅卷人会核查准确性。
| Style | In-text example | 常用学科 |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard | (Smith, 2023, p. 12) | 社科、商科 |
| APA 7th | (Smith, 2023, p. 12) | 心理学、教育学 |
| MLA 9th | (Smith 12) | 文学、语言学 |
| OSCOLA | Footnote system | 法学 |
Every in-text citation must appear in the reference list, and every reference must be cited in the text. A reference list is not a bibliography: it contains only the works you actually used.
每一条文内引注都必须出现在参考文献表中,每一条参考文献也都必须在正文中被引用。参考文献表不同于书目:它只包含你真正使用过的文献。
9. Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism | 学术诚信与避免抄袭
Plagiarism includes more than copying and pasting. Patchwriting - changing a few words while keeping the original sentence structure - is treated as plagiarism by most British universities, even when the source is cited.
抄袭不只是复制粘贴。"拼贴改写",即只改动几个词却保留原句结构,在多数英国大学都被认定为抄袭,即使标注了来源也一样。
- Direct plagiarism: copying text without quotation marks or citation. | 直接抄袭:未加引号或引注地复制原文。
- Patchwriting: superficial rewording that keeps the original syntax. | 拼贴改写:只做表面换词,保留原句句法。
- Self-plagiarism: resubmitting your own previous work without permission. | 自我抄袭:未经许可重复提交自己此前的作业。
- Collusion: sharing answers with classmates when individual work is required. | 串通:在要求独立完成时与同学共享答案。
- Contract cheating: submitting work written by another person or service. | 代写:提交由他人或机构代笔的作品。
A similarity score from software such as Turnitin is not a plagiarism rate. A high score may simply reflect a long reference list or correctly quoted material. Read the report rather than the number.
Turnitin 等软件给出的相似度指数并不是抄袭率。高分可能只是源于长长的参考文献表或规范引用的原句。要看报告内容,而不是只看数字。
Common knowledge - widely accepted facts found in five or more sources - normally needs no citation, but this varies by discipline. When in doubt, cite.
常识性内容,即在五个以上来源中都能找到的公认事实,通常无需引注,但不同学科标准不同。拿不准时,就加引注。
10. Academic Tone, Style and Vocabulary | 学术语气、文风与词汇
Academic writing is formal, precise and impersonal. Avoid contractions such as 'don't', slang, rhetorical questions, exclamation marks, and the generic 'you'. In most disciplines, first-person singular is acceptable only in reflective writing.
学术写作讲究正式、精确和客观。避免使用"don't"这类缩略形式、俚语、反问句、感叹号,以及泛指性的"you"。在大多数学科中,第一人称单数只适用于反思性写作。
Use hedging to signal appropriate caution. Verbs such as 'suggests', 'indicates' and 'appears to' acknowledge that evidence is rarely conclusive, whereas absolute words like 'proves' or 'always' invite challenge.
用模糊限制语表达恰当的审慎。"suggests"、"indicates"、"appears to"这类动词承认证据很少是决定性的,而"proves"或"always"这类绝对化措辞则容易招致反驳。
Nominalisation - turning verbs into nouns - increases density but reduces readability. 'The implementation of the policy resulted in a reduction in emissions' is denser than 'When the government implemented the policy, emissions fell'. Balance the two.
名词化,即把动词转化为名词,能提高信息密度但会降低可读性。相比"When the government implemented the policy, emissions fell","The implementation of the policy resulted in a reduction in emissions"密度更高。要在两者之间取得平衡。
Build a personal academic phrase bank: signposting phrases, contrast phrases, causal phrases and concluding phrases. Reusing polished structures frees your attention for the argument itself.
建立个人的学术短语库:标示结构、对比转折、因果论证和总结收束的表达。复用打磨好的句式,可以把注意力释放出来专注于论证本身。
11. Editing, Proofreading and Feedback | 修改、校对与反馈
Write a first draft quickly, then revise in separate passes: one pass for argument and structure, one for evidence and citation, one for sentences, and one for grammar. Trying to fix everything at once usually fixes nothing.
快速写出初稿,然后分轮修改:一轮看论证和结构,一轮看证据和引注,一轮看句子,一轮看语法。想一次改好所有问题,通常什么都改不好。
A reverse outline is the most efficient structural check. Write one sentence summarising each paragraph, then read the list on its own. If the sequence does not build an argument, the essay will not either.
反向提纲是最有效的结构检查法。为每一段写一句摘要,然后单独通读这份清单。如果这个顺序本身不构成论证,那么全文也不会。
Watch for recurring second-language errors: article use, subject-verb agreement, preposition choice, and tense consistency. Keep a personal error log and check it before every submission.
留意反复出现的二语错误:冠词使用、主谓一致、介词搭配和时态一致性。建立个人错误清单,每次交稿前逐条核对。
Engage with tutor feedback. Rewrite the paragraph the
