📚 AP English Literature and Composition: Complete Revision Guide | AP英语文学与写作:完整备考指南

AP English Literature and Composition is a college-level course built on careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Students work with carefully chosen texts so that they come to appreciate the many ways writers craft language to to both convey meaning and to give pleasure, and along the way they examine a work's structure, style and themes, as well as finer details such as figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone.

AP英语文学与写作是一门大学水平的课程,建立在对象性文学作品的细读与批判性分析之上。学生通过研读精心挑选的文本,体会作家如何运用语言既传达意义、又带来审美愉悦;在此过程中,他们需要分析作品的结构、风格与主题,也要把握比喻性语言、意象、象征、语气等更细微的层面。

1. What the Course Really Asks of You | 这门课真正要求你做什么

The course is not a language-acquisition class and it is not a survey of literary history. It assumes that you already read and write fluent academic English, and it spends its time on interpretation and argument instead. Every unit asks the same underlying question: how does this text work, and how do you know?

这门课不是语言学习课,也不是文学史概览课。它默认你已经能流畅地阅读和书写学术英语,并把时间用在解读与论证上。每个单元其实都在追问同一个问题:这段文本是如何运作的,你凭什么这么说?

Assessment is therefore analytical rather than descriptive. A summary of what happens in a passage earns almost nothing; an argument about why the author made that choice, supported by quotation and explanation, earns almost everything. In practice this means your marks come from commentary, not from plot recall.

因此,评分考查的是分析能力而非复述能力。仅仅概述一段文本发生了什么,几乎拿不到分;而论证作者为何做出这样的选择、并用引文与阐释加以支撑,才是得分的关键。实际上,你的分数来自"评论",而不是来自"记住情节"。

The course also treats literature as a conversation. Texts echo earlier texts, genres repeat and revise conventions, and a strong essay often notes how a modern novel answers a Shakespearean play. Recognizing these relationships is one of the fastest routes to the sophistication point.

这门课还把文学视为一场对话。文本彼此呼应,体裁不断重复并改写既有惯例,一篇优秀的文章常常会指出某部现代小说如何回应某部莎士比亚戏剧。识别这种关系,是拿到"精妙分"最快的途径之一。

2. Close Reading: The Core Skill | 细读:核心技能

Close reading means paying attention to the smallest units of a text and then building outward. Start with diction - the specific words chosen - then syntax, then imagery, then structure, then tone. Ask what would be lost if the author had written the sentence any other way, because that loss is usually the meaning.

细读意味着先关注文本最小的单位,再向外扩展。先看措辞(作者具体选了哪些词),再看句法,再看意象,再看结构,最后看语气。要不断追问:如果作者换一种写法,会失去什么?而那"失去的东西"通常就是意义所在。

Useful annotation habits include marking shifts in tense, person or tone; circling repeated words and images; noting where punctuation slows a sentence down or speeds it up; and flagging any line that seems to contradict what came before. Ambiguity is not a problem to be solved but evidence to be used.

有效的批注习惯包括:标记时态、人称或语气的转折;圈出反复出现的词与意象;注意标点在哪里让句子变慢或变快;标出任何与前文看似矛盾的句子。歧义不是需要被"解决"的问题,而是可供使用的证据。

A workable close-reading checklist:

3. The Six Big Ideas | 六大核心概念

The course and exam description organises the whole course around six big ideas, and every multiple-choice question and every essay prompt grows out of one of them. If you know which big idea a question belongs to, you already know what kind of evidence to look for.

课程与考试说明把整门课围绕六大核心概念组织起来,每一道选择题、每一道作文题都源自其中之一。如果你能判断某道题属于哪个核心概念,你其实已经知道该找什么证据了。

Big IdeaEnglish Focus中文要点
Character (CHR)How characters are constructed, motivated and changed人物如何被建构、驱动与转变
Setting (SET)How place, time and social world shape meaning地点、时间与社会环境如何塑造意义
Structure (STR)Arrangement, sequence, pacing and juxtaposition编排、顺序、节奏与并置
Narration (NAR)Point of view, reliability, distance and perspective视角、可靠性、叙述距离与立场
Figurative Language (FIG)Metaphor, imagery, symbol, irony and their effects隐喻、意象、象征、反讽及其效果
Literary Argumentation (LAN)Building defensible claims from textual evidence以文本证据构建可辩护的论点

Notice that five of the six are about reading and only one is about writing. That ratio mirrors the exam: your essay quality is limited by the quality of what you noticed first.

注意,六个概念里有五个是关于"读"的,只有一个是关于"写"的。这个比例也反映了考试现实:文章的上限,取决于你最初读出了什么。

4. The Nine Units of the Course | 课程的九个单元

The course is sequenced into nine units that alternate between short fiction, poetry and longer works, each cycle deepening the same skills. The repetition is deliberate: you meet the same analytical moves three times, at increasing difficulty.

课程按九个单元排序,在短篇小说、诗歌与长篇作品之间交替,每一轮循环都把同样的技能推向更深处。这种重复是刻意设计的:同样的分析动作你要遇到三次,难度逐级上升。

In the later units the texts become longer, older and more formally complex, and the commentary expected of you becomes more nuanced. By Unit 9 you should be able to handle a nineteenth-century novel excerpt and a metaphysical poem with the same analytical confidence.

到了后面的单元,文本更长、年代更久、形式更复杂,对评论的要求也更精细。到单元九,你应当能用同样的分析自信,处理一段十九世纪小说节选和一首玄学派诗歌。

5. Poetry: Reading and Analysing Verse | 诗歌:阅读与分析

Poetry rewards precision. Establish the situation first - who is speaking, to whom, in what circumstances - before you touch metre or rhyme, because form only means something in relation to content. A poem written in tight iambic pentameter about chaotic grief is making an argument through that contrast.

诗歌奖励精确。先确定情境——谁在说、对谁说、在什么处境下说——再去碰格律和押韵,因为形式只有与内容对照才有意义。一首用严整五音步抑扬格写混乱悲伤的诗,正是在用这种反差表达观点。

Key formal vocabulary to handle fluently:

When you write about a poem, avoid paraphrase. Instead of saying "the speaker walks alone and feels sad", say "the repeated past-tense verb 'wandered' places the speaker in a state of aimless motion before the poem's single present-tense turn".

写诗歌分析时,切忌改写大意。不要写"说话人独自走着,感到悲伤",而要写"反复出现的过去时动词 'wandered' 先把说话人置于漫无目的的移动之中,直到全诗唯一一次现在时的转折出现"。

6. Prose Fiction: Passage Analysis | 小说散文:段落分析

Prose fiction questions usually give you a passage of roughly a page and ask about a relationship, a moment of change, or the function of a particular detail. The first task is orientation: who narrates, from what distance, and with what degree of access to other minds?

小说类题目通常给出一页左右的选段,询问某种关系、某个转变时刻,或某个细节的作用。第一步是定位:谁在叙述、距离多远、对他人内心有多大的进入权限?

Watch especially for free indirect discourse, where a third-person narrator absorbs a character's idiom and judgements without quotation marks. This technique blurs the line between narrator and character and is a favourite target of exam questions.

尤其要留意"自由间接引语":第三人称叙述者不加引号地吸收人物的语汇与判断。这种手法模糊了叙述者与人物的界限,是考试极爱考查的对象。

Also track how setting does work. A room can mirror a marriage, a season can measure a life, a threshold can mark a decision. And notice structure at the level of the sentence: short clauses create urgency, long periodic sentences create delay and withheld meaning.

同时要追踪环境如何"做工"。一间屋子可以映照一段婚姻,一个季节可以丈量一生,一道门槛可以标记一个决定。也别忽略句子层面的结构:短句制造急迫,长周期句制造延迟与意义的悬置。

7. Drama and the Longer Work | 戏剧与长篇作品

Drama is written to be performed, so analysis must account for what an audience sees and hears. Soliloquy gives direct access to a mind; aside creates intimacy with the audience and exclusion of other characters; dramatic irony depends on the gap between what the audience knows and what a character knows.

戏剧是为演出而写的,因此分析必须考虑观众看到与听到的一切。独白让观众直接进入人物内心;旁白制造与观众的亲密、同时把其他人物排除在外;戏剧性反讽则依赖观众所知与人物所知之间的落差。

For the free-response literary argument question you may choose your own novel or play, so preparation matters as much as skill. Choose two or three works you know deeply rather than ten you know vaguely: a Shakespeare play, a nineteenth-century novel, and one twentieth-century work gives you coverage across the common prompt types.

自由作答的"文学论证"题允许你自选长篇小说或戏剧,因此"准备"与"技巧"同样重要。宁可深熟两三部作品,也不要浅知十部:一部莎士比亚戏剧、一部十九世纪小说、一部二十世纪作品,基本可以覆盖常见题干类型。

Prepare each work along predictable axes: a central character's development, the function of a minor character, a symbol and its shifts, the ending's logic, and one relationship that changes. If you can write a page on each of those, you are ready for almost any prompt.

准备每部作品时可以按可预期的维度切入:主角的发展、次要人物的功能、某个象征及其变化、结局的逻辑,以及一段发生变化的关系。若每个维度你都能写出一页,几乎任何题干你都能应对。

8. Literary Devices You Must Name Precisely | 必须准确命名的文学手法

Naming a device is never the point, but naming it wrongly costs credibility. Use terms because they sharpen your explanation, not because they decorate it. The following are the ones that appear most often in exam commentary.

指出手法名称从来不是目的,但叫错名称会损害可信度。使用术语是为了让阐释更锋利,而不是为了装饰。以下是最常出现在考试评论中的术语。

TermMeaning中文
MetonymySubstituting a related thing for the thing itself ("the crown" for monarchy)转喻:以相关事物代替本体
SynecdochePart for whole, or whole for part ("hands" for workers)提喻:以部分代整体
LitotesUnderstatement by negation ("not unkind")曲言:以否定表达弱化陈述
ChiasmusReversed parallel structure (ABBA)交错配列:结构倒转的平行
ZeugmaOne verb governing two unlike objects轭式搭配:一个动词统摄两个不相称宾语
AnaphoraRepetition at the start of successive clauses首语重复:连续分句句首重复
Asyndeton / PolysyndetonDeliberate omission / multiplication of conjunctions连词省略 / 连词堆叠
Motif vs SymbolA recurring element vs an element carrying larger meaning母题(反复出现)与象征(承载更大意义)之别

Remember that irony has three common forms - verbal, situational and dramatic - and that paradox and oxymoron are not synonyms. Paradox is a self-contradictory statement that proves true; oxymoron is a compressed contradiction inside two adjacent words.

记住,反讽常见有三种:言语反讽、情境反讽与戏剧性反讽;而"悖论"与"矛盾修辞"也不是同义词。悖论是看似自相矛盾却成立的说法;矛盾修辞是把矛盾压缩在两个相邻词中。

9. Exam Structure and Timing | 考试结构与时间分配

The exam has two sections and lasts a little over three hours in total. Section I is multiple choice; Section II is three timed essays. Both sections carry substantial weight, which means you cannot afford to neglect either.

考试分两部分,总时长略超三小时。第一部分是选择题,第二部分是三篇限时作文。两部分权重都很高,因此任何一部分都不能放弃。

SectionFormatTimeWeight
Section I55 multiple-choice questions on 5 passages (prose and poetry)1 hour45%
Section II3 free-response essays2 hours (includes a 15-minute reading period)55%

For multiple choice, aim for roughly one minute per question, and never leave a blank - there is no penalty for a wrong answer. Read the passage once for sense before looking at the questions, then answer in the order that suits you, returning to hard items at the end.

选择题部分,大致每题一分钟,并且绝不留空——答错不扣分。先通读一遍选段把握大意,再看题目,然后按自己顺手的顺序作答,把难题留到最后回头处理。

10. The Three Free-Response Essays | 三道自由作答题

The three essays ask for three different things and reward three different kinds of thinking. The first is a poetry analysis, the second a prose fiction analysis of a passage, and the third a literary argument in which you select your own text in response to a general statement or question.

三篇作文要求三种不同的能力,也奖励三种不同的思维。第一题是诗歌分析,第二题是小说选段分析,第三题是文学论证——你需针对一个普适性陈述或问题自选文本作答。

Budget about 40 minutes per essay, and spend the first 5 to 7 minutes annotating and planning. A short essay with a sharp thesis and two well-explained quotations scores better than a long essay that lists devices without explaining their effects.

每篇大约分配 40 分钟,其中前 5 至 7 分钟用来批注与构思。一篇简短但论点锋利、并有两处充分阐释的引文的文章,胜过一篇冗长却只罗列手法、不解释效果的文章。

Every body paragraph should follow the same movement: a claim, a quotation, and then commentary that explains how the language produces the effect you claimed. The commentary is the essay; everything else is scaffolding.

每个主体段都应遵循同样的推进方式:提出主张、给出引文,然后用评论解释语言如何产生你所主张的效果。评论才是文章本体,其余都是脚手架。

11. The 6-Point Rubric and What Examiners Reward | 六分制评分标准与考官看重什么

Each essay is scored on a six-point analytic rubric divided into three rows. Understanding the rows tells you exactly where marks are won and lost.

每篇作文按六分制分析性评分表打分,分为三行。理解这三行,就等于知道分数在哪里得到、在哪里丢掉。
