📚 How to Apply to Irish Universities Using Gaokao Scores |
In recent years, a growing number of Irish universities have formally recognised the Chinese Gaokao as a direct entry qualification for undergraduate programmes. This shift has opened up a convenient route for Chinese students to study in a country known for its high-quality education, welcoming culture and vibrant technology sector. This guide outlines everything you need to know about using your Gaokao results to apply to Irish higher education institutions.
1. Why Choose Ireland as a Study Destination |
Ireland offers a unique combination of academic excellence, English-speaking environment and post-study work opportunities. Its universities consistently rank among the top 5% worldwide, and the country is a European hub for global companies in technology, pharmaceuticals and finance.
International students benefit from a safe, multicultural society and the 'Third Level Graduate Scheme', which allows non-EU graduates to stay and work for up to two years after completing their degree.
2. Gaokao Recognition by Irish Universities |
Most leading Irish universities now accept the Gaokao for direct entry, treating it on a par with other international school-leaving qualifications such as A-Levels or the IB. Institutions including Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and University of Galway have published specific Gaokao score requirements for Chinese applicants.
It is important to note that while most programmes are open to Gaokao students, some highly competitive courses like medicine, dentistry or architecture may require additional tests or have limited places.
3. Converting Your Gaokao Score for Irish Entry |
Irish universities typically express Gaokao requirements as a percentage of the total maximum marks in your home province. For example, a common threshold is 80% or above of the overall Gaokao score. If your province's total score is 750, you would need at least 600 marks.
red minimum score = Gaokao provincial total × required percentage (e.g., 750 × 0.80 = 600)
Additionally, some programmes may stipulate a minimum score in specific Gaokao subjects, such as mathematics or science, so check individual course pages carefully.
4. English Language Proficiency |
Because all undergraduate teaching is conducted through English, international students must prove their English ability. The most widely accepted tests are IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT. Standard requirements are typically an IELTS overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0, or a TOEFL score of 90 with minimum section scores.
Some Irish universities also accept Gaokao English in lieu of IELTS if your Gaokao English score is at a specified level (often 120/150 or 80% of the English paper), but you must verify this with the admissions office of each university.
5. Application Process and Timeline |
Unlike domestic Irish students who use the Central Applications Office (CAO), international students applying with Gaokao scores usually apply directly to the university's international office. Most universities have a dedicated online application portal for non-EU applicants, and applications typically open in October for the following September entry.
Key deadlines fall between January and June, with many universities operating a rolling admissions policy. It is advisable to submit your application as early as possible, as popular courses fill quickly and offer making may end by late spring.
Once you receive a conditional offer based on predicted or final Gaokao scores, you will typically be asked to upload your final Gaokao certificate in late June or July to convert it to a full offer.
6. Documents You Will Need |
A complete application typically requires the following documents, uploaded in colour as PDFs or clear scans:
Passport (photo page) |
Gaokao score report (predicted or final) |
High school graduation certificate (translated and notarised if not in English) |
English language test score report |
Personal statement or motivation letter |
One or two reference letters (usually from subject teachers) |
Any additional course-specific requirements (portfolio, CV, etc.) |

8. Tuition Fees and Estimated Living Costs |
Undergraduate tuition fees for non-EU students in Ireland range broadly from €9,000 to €35,000 per year depending on the institution and field of study. Arts, humanities and business courses tend to be at the lower end, while medicine, engineering and science programmes command higher fees.
Living costs are estimated at around €10,000–€12,000 per year, covering accommodation, food, books and transport. Dublin is noticeably more expensive than other cities; shared housing can still cost between €500 and €900 per month.
9. Scholarships and Financial Support |
Several Irish universities offer merit-based scholarships specifically for international students from China. For instance, the 'Global Excellence Scholarships' at UCD and the 'Trinity International Scholarships' can provide partial tuition fee waivers of up to a few thousand euros.
Additionally, the Irish government's 'Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships' programme awards full fee waivers and a stipend to high-achieving students from non-EU countries each year. Applications are competitive and require a strong academic record and personal statement.
10. Student Visa Application |
Chinese citizens must obtain a 'D' category long-stay student visa before travelling to Ireland. You should apply online via the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service website and submit your biometrics at a visa application centre in China.
Essential documents for the visa include: unconditional offer letter from the university, proof of tuition fee payment, evidence of sufficient funds (currently €7,000 per year, roughly CNY 55,000), medical insurance and a valid passport. The processing time is typically 4–8 weeks, so apply early.
