📚 University Entrance Exams Around the World: A-Level, SAT, Gaokao and Beyond | 世界各国的大学入学考试:A-Level、SAT、高考与多元选拔巡礼
There is never only one road to a world-class university. Every country's selection system works like a carefully polished mirror, reflecting a distinct set of educational values and social expectations. This article starts from the A2 stage of the British A-Level and then travels across the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, the Netherlands, France, Germany, India and Singapore to ask a single shared question: how can selection be both valid and fair?
1. Why Entrance Systems Diverge |
Every admissions system answers the same question - who should receive a scarce university place? - yet the answers diverge because they are shaped by history, funding and politics. France's baccalauréat is a state diploma organised nationally; the United States relies on private testing organisations plus holistic review; Germany's Abitur is designed and marked largely within its own states.
A second dividing line is function. Some systems treat the final examination as certification, that is, proof that a student has completed secondary education, while others treat it as a ranking machine that sorts applicants for oversubscribed courses. Britain's GCSE sits closer to certification, whereas A-Level grades and Japan's second-stage tests are pure selection instruments.
A third difference is granularity: a whole-person file versus a single number. The table below summarises the main systems discussed in this article.
| UK 英国 | GCSE, A-Level (AS + A2) | Grades + statement + reference 成绩+文书+推荐信 |
| USA 美国 | SAT or ACT | Holistic review 整体审查 |
| Australia 澳大利亚 | HSC, VCE and other state certificates | ATAR rank ATAR 排名 |
2. The United States: ACT versus SAT | 美国:ACT 与 SAT 的关键差异
The ACT and SAT are accepted by virtually every American university, but they test different instincts. The ACT behaves like a systematic audit of what was taught in high school: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science Reasoning, with an optional Writing test. The SAT concentrates on reasoning and critical thinking, using Mathematics and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing to estimate academic potential.
The scoring structures are also different, and it is worth memorising both:
ACT Composite = (English + Mathematics + Reading + Science) ÷ 4 → 1 to 36
SAT Total = EBRW (200-800) + Mathematics (200-800) → 400 to 1600
Since 2024 the digital SAT has been section-adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second module in each section depends on performance in the first. The ACT remains a linear, speed-heavy paper, and timing is often the real opponent for candidates.
These scores influence not only admission but also merit scholarship allocation. Although most leading universities claim to be even-handed, regional preferences are still visible: candidates in the Midwest and the South traditionally sit the ACT, while the East and West Coasts lean towards the SAT. For applicants, the wise move is to diagnose your own knowledge structure and thinking style first, then invest preparation where it pays.
One recent twist matters for planning: after a wave of test-optional policies, several highly selective universities in the United States have reintroduced testing requirements, so candidates must check each institution's current policy rather than relying on older advice.
3. Britain: GCSE and the A-Level Bridge | 英国:GCSE 与 A-Level 的衔接路径
British students meet the GCSE at 16, a qualification supervised by Ofqual. Most candidates take eight to ten subjects, combining compulsory cores with freely chosen options. Once the school-leaving certificate is in hand, students decide whether to continue into further study.
