📚 A & AS Level Thinking Skills: Complete Revision Guide | A & AS Level
Thinking Skills is a stand-alone A and AS Level course that equips students with a distinctive range of intellectual tools, free from the confines of any individual subject. It exists as a direct response to the growing demand from universities and employers for more advanced, nuanced reasoning. The course sharpens the ability to grasp, dissect and solve unfamiliar problems, and it enriches the way learners engage with all their other studies. For students heading into higher education or into careers such as law, scientific research, the social sciences, journalism, medicine, business, accounting or engineering, it works as a powerful stepping stone.
1. What the Course Really Is | 这门课究竟是什么
Thinking Skills teaches the machinery of reasoning rather than the content of one subject. You are not asked to memorise dates, formulas or case law. Instead, you meet an unfamiliar problem or argument and work out what follows from what, which evidence matters, and where the reasoning breaks down. The skills are transferable: a method learned in a logic puzzle reappears in a medical ethics debate, a data table in a news report, or a research proposal in a laboratory.
The course develops three broad capacities, and almost every exam question tests one of them:
- Comprehension | 理解 - grasping exactly what a problem or argument claims, and what it does not claim.
- Analysis | 分析 - splitting the material into parts: premises, conclusions, assumptions, data sets, constraints.
- Evaluation | 评价 - judging whether the reasoning is strong enough to support the conclusion, and expressing that judgement clearly.
A common misunderstanding is that Thinking Skills is a general knowledge quiz or an IQ test. It is neither. It is a trainable discipline: students who appear to be guessing are usually applying a small set of repeatable procedures they have practised deliberately.
2. Why Universities and Employers Value It | 大学与雇主为何看重它
Universities now test reasoning directly. The LNAT, the TSA, the UCAT and many subject-specific admissions tests all ask candidates to interpret evidence, spot flawed inference and argue under time pressure. A Thinking Skills qualification signals that a student has already practised these moves in a structured way, rather than meeting them for the first time in an admissions hall.
Employers ask similar questions in a different form. A lawyer must separate a client's story from the legal issue inside it. A doctor must weigh symptoms, test results and base rates before deciding. An engineer must check whether a set of constraints actually admits a solution. A journalist must notice when a statistic does not mean what the headline says.
The course champions lively, open debate, nurtures critical and investigative mindsets, and builds the habit of careful, disciplined reasoning. Those habits outlast the exam: they shape how you read, write, decide and disagree.
3. How the Papers Are Structured |
Most boards split the course into two families of papers: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking. At AS level you typically sit one paper from each family; a full A Level adds extended papers that combine both skills and require longer written argument. The weighting is roughly balanced, so it is a mistake to revise one side heavily and neglect the other.
| Problem Solving | 问题解决 | Logic puzzles, data tables, spatial and numerical reasoning | 逻辑谜题、数据表、空间与数字推理 | Short answers under tight time limits | 时间紧张下的短答 |
| Critical Thinking | 批判性思维 | Argument analysis, assumptions, flaws, evidence | 论证分析、隐含假设、谬误、证据 | Identifying and explaining, not just labelling | 识别并解释,而不只是贴标签 |
Marks are awarded for method and for the quality of justification. A correct answer with no visible reasoning often earns partial credit only, while a clearly staged approach can score even when the final figure is wrong.
4. The Problem Solving Toolkit |
Problem solving questions look chaotic at first reading, but almost all of them reduce to a few repeatable techniques. The first is search and enumeration: when the number of possibilities is small, list them systematically instead of trying to see the answer at a glance. The second is constraint handling: translate every sentence of the question into a rule, then test candidate answers against the rules one at a time.
- Logic grids | 逻辑网格 - a table of people against attributes, with ✓ and × marks eliminating combinations.
- Truth tables | 真值表 - testing statements that may be true, false or conditional when several claims interact.
- Ordering and ranking | 排序与排名 - fixing positions from 'before', 'immediately after', 'not first' style clues.
- Data interpretation | 数据解读 - reading units, percentages and totals carefully before calculating.
- Diagrams and spatial reasoning | 图形与空间推理 - rotating, folding or overlaying shapes in the mind's eye.
A workable habit is to spend forty seconds understanding the structure before writing anything. Ask: what kind of answer is expected - a number, a name, a sequence, a yes/no with a reason? Then choose the representation that makes the constraints visible.
5. The Critical Thinking Toolkit: Argument Anatomy |
Every argument has a skeleton: reasons offered in support of a conclusion, plus assumptions that are not stated but must hold for the reasoning to work. Finding the conclusion is step one. It is not always the last sentence, and it is often introduced by words such as 'therefore', 'so', 'it follows that' or, in a persuasive passage, by an opinion the rest of the text is trying to make acceptable.
Reason R₁ + Reason R₂ + hidden Assumption A → Conclusion C
A reliable method is to write the skeleton out formally. If the conclusion does not follow from the reasons alone, there is a gap, and the missing assumption is exactly what the question wants you to name. Marks are usually lost not because the assumption is hard to find, but because students describe it vaguely instead of stating it as a precise, necessary claim.
- Intermediate conclusion | 中间结论 - a claim that supports the main conclusion and is itself supported by reasons.
- Counter-example | 反例 - a single case that makes a general claim false, and therefore tests its strength.
- Necessary vs sufficient | 必要与充分 - 'only if' failures break an argument; 'if' failures merely weaken it.
6. Patterns of Reasoning: Deduction, Induction, Analogy and Cause |
Deduction moves with certainty: if the premises are true, the conclusion cannot be false. Induction moves with probability, generalising from samples or from observed regularities. Analogy transfers a pattern from one case to a similar one. Causal reasoning claims that one thing produces another, and it demands more evidence than a simple correlation.
Exam questions frequently test whether a candidate can tell these apart. A passage that says 'every previous winner trained early, so early training produces winners' has slid from a correlation to a cause. A passage that says 'this drug worked in nine of ten cases, so it will work for you' has slid from a statistical average to an individual prediction.
- Deductive validity | 演绎有效性 - structure, not truth of premises.
- Inductive strength | 归纳强度 - sample size, representativeness and absence of bias.
7. Spotting Flaws and Fallacies |
Flaw questions are among the most predictable in the paper because real arguments reuse the same handful of mistakes. Naming the flaw is not enough; the answer must show how that specific flaw damages this specific argument.
- Circular reasoning | 循环论证 - the conclusion is quietly used as one of its own reasons.
- Hasty generalisation | 以偏概全 - a broad claim built from too few or unrepresentative cases.
- Straw man | 稻草人 - attacking a weaker version of the opposing position.
- Slippery slope | 滑坡论证 - claiming one step must lead to an extreme outcome without justification.
- False dilemma | 假两难 - presenting two options when others exist.
- Appeal to authority or popularity | 诉诸权威或多数 - treating reputation or consensus as proof.
- Ad hominem | 人身攻击 - rejecting a claim because of who made it.
In persuasive writing, watch the wording itself. Emotive adjectives, loaded questions, vague quantifiers such as 'many experts' and selective statistics all shape the reader before any argument is examined.
8. Evaluating Evidence and Data |
Evidence questions ask whether the support offered is strong enough for the claim made. Three checks resolve most of them: where did the data come from, who is missing from it, and does the conclusion require more than the data can supply?
- Sample | 样本 - size, selection method and whether respondents self-selected.
- Representativeness | 代表性 - does the group studied resemble the group the conclusion covers?
- Average traps | 平均数陷阱 - mean, median and mode can tell very different stories.
- Correlation vs cause | 相关与因果 - co-variation alone never establishes production.
- Graph distortion | 图表失真 - truncated axes, 3-D effects and missing baselines exaggerate differences.
- Base rates | 基础概率 - a highly accurate test can
