5. Doctoral Studies in English |
FU Berlin provides excellent opportunities for doctoral candidates to pursue their research in English. Doctoral studies are typically not structured as taught programs but involve independent research under supervision. However, many structured doctoral programs and graduate schools use English as the working language. Examples include the Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies, the Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies, and various natural science and computational doctoral programs. Applicants usually need a master’s degree and must secure a supervisor at the university before applying.
6. Program Highlights and Unique Features |
One key advantage of studying at FU Berlin is its strong research environment and close ties with non-university research institutes like the Max Planck Society and the Helmholtz Association. Students in English-taught programs benefit from small class sizes, international cohorts, and a curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking and independent research. Many programs include internship opportunities or study abroad periods. The university also offers language courses and intercultural training to help international students integrate into the German academic and social context without requiring full German fluency.
7. Admission Requirements |
Admission to English-taught programs at FU Berlin is competitive. For master's programs, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject with above-average grades. Specific grade requirements and prerequisite courses vary by program. Some programs may require a motivation letter, CV, letters of recommendation, and sometimes an entrance examination or interview. For bachelor’s programs, a secondary school leaving certificate equivalent to the German Abitur is needed, and international applicants must check their qualifications through the DAAD or uni-assist databases. Deadlines typically fall around July 15 for the winter semester and January 15 for the summer semester, but many English-taught programs only admit in the winter semester.
8. Language Requirements |
Since the medium of instruction is English, non-native speakers must provide proof of English proficiency. Accepted tests and minimum scores generally include: TOEFL iBT at least 80–100 (depending on the program), IELTS Academic 6.0–7.0, or Cambridge English Qualifications (C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency). Some programs may accept other equivalents like a university degree completed in English in certain countries. German language skills are not typically required for admission to these programs, although having basic German can be beneficial for daily life and internships. Preparatory German courses are available on campus.
9. Tuition Fees and Living Costs |
As a public university in Berlin, FU Berlin does not charge tuition fees for most degree programs, including English-taught master’s and bachelor’s programs. However, all students must pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) of approximately EUR 320–350 per semester. This fee covers administrative costs, a public transport ticket for the Berlin-Brandenburg region, and student services. Living costs in Berlin are relatively affordable compared to other European capitals, but students should budget around EUR 900–1,200 per month for accommodation, food, health insurance, and personal expenses.

10. Scholarships and Funding |
International students enrolled in English-taught programs have several funding options. The Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship) provides EUR 300 per month to high-achieving students, regardless of nationality. Other grants include the DAAD scholarships for master’s students and doctoral candidates, as well as fellowships from political foundations like the Friedrich Ebert Foundation or Konrad Adenauer Foundation. FU Berlin also offers the "FU Berlin International Students Scholarship" for advanced students and the "Emergency Fund" for short-term financial hardship. Applicants are advised to check deadlines early, as many scholarships have application periods well before the program start date.
