1. German Universities Are Completely Free for Everyone |
Many students believe that studying in Germany costs nothing at all. While most public universities in Germany indeed do not charge tuition fees for consecutive undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, this is not universal. Since the winter semester of 2017/18, the federal state of Baden-Württemberg has required non-EU students to pay a tuition fee of €1,500 per semester. Other states have debated similar charges, and some private universities naturally charge fees. Moreover, every student must pay a mandatory semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) that covers student services, the student union, and usually a public transport semester ticket. This fee typically ranges from €100 to €350 per semester, depending on the university.
Furthermore, living expenses in Germany are significant and must be covered from the first day. To obtain a student visa and residence permit, non-EU students must prove they have sufficient financial resources, usually by opening a blocked account with a minimum deposit of €11,208 per year (as of 2024). Rent, health insurance, food, and study materials can easily exceed €900 per month, especially in cities like Munich, Hamburg, or Frankfurt. Calling a German degree 'free' is therefore misleading when you consider the overall cost of living.
2. All Degree Programmes Are Taught in German |
A widespread concern is that you cannot study in Germany unless you are fluent in German. In reality, German higher education has become increasingly international, with a vast portfolio of English-taught programmes, especially at the master's level. According to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), there are over 2,000 international programmes conducted entirely in English, covering fields such as engineering, natural sciences, business administration, social sciences, and the humanities. Many bachelor's programmes are also offered in a bilingual format or fully in English at some universities of applied sciences and private institutions.
While learning German will undoubtedly enrich your daily life and open up internship and job opportunities, it is not a strict prerequisite for admission to many programmes. Applicants to English-taught degrees typically need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores, not German certificates. So, if German language is a barrier, you still have plentiful options to pursue a high-quality degree in Germany.
3. You Need a C2 German Certificate to Apply | 申请需要歌德C2证书
Many prospective applicants overestimate the German language requirements and fear they must reach the near-native C2 level. For the vast majority of German-taught programmes, universities require proof of proficiency at the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The most accepted exams are TestDaF with TDN 4 in all four parts or DSH-2. A few institutions offer conditional admission with a B2 certificate, allowing students to attend a preparatory language course before starting their degree.
Only highly specialised disciplines such as German studies, translation, or interpreting may demand the Goethe-Zertifikat C2. For English-taught programmes, the language bar is set at IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL around 80–90, which is achievable for many international students. Thus, the real challenge is reaching C1, not the almost unreachable C2.
4. Getting Admission to a German University Is Extremely Difficult |
Some students believe that German universities are almost impossible to enter due to strict quotas and high entry requirements. While certain programmes, such as medicine, pharmacy, and psychology, are indeed highly competitive with a Numerus Clausus (NC) requiring top grades, many other programmes are 'zulassungsfrei' (without admission restrictions), meaning that if you meet the basic formal requirements, you are guaranteed a place. For international applicants, the main challenge is often having your qualifications recognised and meeting language prerequisites, rather than outcompeting others in a selection process.
