📚 AP United States History: Course, Exam and Revision Guide | AP
AP United States History is one of the most widely taken Advanced Placement subjects in the world. It is a full-year course and a single exam that together aim to reproduce the experience of an introductory college survey in U.S. history, and it is written and revised by a committee of high school and university history educators rather than by any single publisher or teacher.
1. What AP U.S. History Is | AP
The Advanced Placement (AP) program offers an AP United States History course and exam for motivated high school students who want a learning experience equivalent to an introductory college course in U.S. history. The exam assumes that students have completed at least a year of college-level preparation in the subject, so the reading load, the pace and the writing demands are all set at university level rather than at the level of an ordinary high school survey.
In practice, the exam measures the skills and knowledge typically acquired in such a course. It is not a trivia test: a student who memorises dates without being able to explain causation, continuity and change will struggle, and so will a student who argues fluently but cannot cite specific evidence.
2. Who Shapes the Course and What the Exam Assumes |
Inclusion of any material in the course description and exam does not mean that the College Board or ETS endorses the content, ideas, or values expressed. The content has been carefully selected and is regularly revised by a committee of high school and university history educators - the AP U.S. History Development Committee.
The syllabus reflects the substance of an introductory college survey in U.S. history, based on feedback from over 100 colleges and universities. Because the framework is revised periodically, students should always check the current Course and Exam Description for the year in which they will sit the exam, since unit weightings and the wording of some learning objectives do change between editions.
3. Skills and Knowledge the Course Builds |
The AP U.S. History course is designed to build both analytical skills and factual knowledge, enabling students to engage critically with historical problems and materials. Its demands match those of a full-year college introductory course, laying a foundation for intermediate and advanced study in history and in related disciplines such as political science, law and economics.
The framework names six historical thinking skills that are assessed throughout the exam:
- Developments and Processes - describing and explaining what happened and why it mattered.
- Sourcing and Situation - analysing who produced a source, when, why and for whom.
- Claims and Evidence in Sources - identifying arguments and the evidence used to support them.
- Contextualization - placing events and sources in a wider historical setting.
- Making Connections - linking developments across periods, regions and themes.
- Argumentation - building a defensible thesis supported by evidence.
4. Assessing Sources, Weighing Interpretations, Writing Essays |
Students learn to assess historical sources - their relevance, reliability, and significance - and to weigh different interpretations found in scholarly work. That last phrase matters: historians disagree, and a strong AP answer shows awareness that the same evidence can support more than one defensible reading.
An AP U.S. History course therefore develops the ability to form conclusions from informed judgment and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay form. The exam rewards a precise thesis, accurate evidence used in service of an argument, explicit reasoning about causation or comparison, and a conclusion that goes beyond restating the introduction.
5. Course Content: Periods and Themes |
The content is organised into nine chronological periods running from 1491 to the present. Periods 3 to 8 each carry roughly ten to thirteen percent of the exam content, while the earliest and the most recent periods carry the smallest share - which is why a common mistake is to over-revise the colonial era and under-revise the twentieth century.
- 1491-1607: Native societies, European contact and early colonisation.
- 1607-1754: British colonies, regional economies, slavery and empire.
- 1754-1800: Revolution, independence, constitution and early republic.
- 1800-1848: Expansion, market revolution, reform and democracy.
- 1844-1877: Sectionalism, Civil War and Reconstruction.
- 1865-1898: Industrialisation, the West, immigration and urbanisation.
- 1890-1945: Progressivism, world wars, Depression and the New Deal.
- 1945-1980: Cold War, civil rights, suburbs and social change.
- 1980-present: Conservatism, globalisation, immigration and the digital age.
Cutting across those periods are eight themes, including American and National Identity; Work, Exchange, and Technology; Geography and the Environment; Migration and Settlement; Politics and Power; America in the World; American and Regional Culture; and Social Structures. Exam questions rarely test one period alone; they usually ask you to trace a theme over time.
6. The Exam Format |
The exam lasts 3 hours and 15 minutes and is divided into two sections. Section I contains multiple-choice and short-answer questions; Section II contains the two essay tasks. The weighting means that no single question type can be ignored, and that essay writing alone cannot rescue a weak factual base.
| Component | Format | Time | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 55 questions | 55 min | 40% |
| Short answer | 3 questions (3 parts each) | 40 min | 20% |
