When choosing a business major, check if the program is accredited by professional bodies such as CPA Australia, CFA Institute, or the Actuaries Institute, as this can fast-track your qualification and enhance your employability both in Australia and overseas.
3. Engineering and Technology |
Engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and mining engineering are in high demand due to Australia's robust infrastructure projects and resources sector. Many Go8 engineering degrees are accredited by Engineers Australia, enabling graduates to work globally under the Washington Accord.

If you are targeting permanent residency, check the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), where civil, structural, and mining engineers frequently appear. A 4-year accredited degree is often required for migration skills assessment.
4. Computer Science and IT | 计算机科学与信息技术
Australia's technology sector is booming, and Go8 computer science programs are designed to meet industry needs in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering, and data science. Melbourne and ANU are particularly strong in AI research, while UNSW and UTS (a non-Go8 but included for comparison) are known for their practical computing courses.

Don't overlook specialisations in business information systems or data analytics, which blend technical skills with commercial acumen and are highly valued by employers ranging from banks to consulting firms.
5. Medicine and Health Sciences |
Medicine, dentistry, nursing, and allied health fields are extremely competitive but lead to secure and respected careers. Graduate-entry medicine at Sydney, Melbourne, and UQ requires a strong undergraduate GPA and GAMSAT score, while direct-entry programs like those at Monash and UNSW are available for high-achieving school leavers.
Nursing is a pragmatic choice for those seeking migration pathways, as registered nurses remain on the MLTSSL. UTS (with UWS) is known for nursing, but Go8 institutions like Sydney and Monash also offer highly respected nursing degrees with extensive clinical placements.

6. Law | 法律
Studying law at a Go8 university provides a rigorous foundation in legal principles and access to prestigious clerkships. The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) at Melbourne, Sydney, and UNSW are consistently top-rated by employers in Australia and Asia.
Melbourne JD takes a uniquely global approach, while Sydney and UNSW offer strong elective clinics and mooting opportunities. If you intend to practise in Australia, you must complete a degree recognised by the admitting authority in your state, plus practical legal training (PLT).
Adelaide and Monash combine law with other disciplines in double degrees, allowing you to graduate with unique expertise, such as Law/Science or Law/Arts. This can set you apart in a competitive job market.
7. Education and Teaching |
Teaching remains a high-demand profession in Australia, with early childhood and secondary school teachers consistently listed on skilled occupation lists. Go8 universities such as Melbourne and Monash lead in education research and offer Master of Teaching programs that align with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) standards.
Melbourne's Master of Teaching is evidence-based and allows specialisation in areas like science or literacy, while Sydney offers strong school partnerships for practicums. When choosing a teaching degree, ensure it includes at least 80 days of supervised placement and is accredited for migration if that is your goal.
Apart from AITSL accreditation, consider which age group you are passionate about—early childhood (birth to 5 years), primary, or secondary. Your subject specialisation at the secondary level will affect your job prospects, with maths and science teachers in particularly short supply.
8. Architecture and Design |
Australia's architecture programs, particularly at Melbourne, Sydney, and UNSW, combine design creativity with technical rigour. The Master of Architecture at these institutions is an accredited pathway to registration as an architect with the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA).
Melbourne School of Design has a strong reputation for urban planning and landscape architecture, while RMIT (though not Go8) is famous for industrial design, but Go8 universities provide the global research credibility many international students seek.
Design-related majors such as interaction design and visual communication are increasingly offered within Go8 arts and technology faculties. If you are considering architecture, factor in the total duration (usually 5 years of combined undergraduate and master's study) and the mandatory practical experience required for full registration.
9. Key Factors in Choosing a Major |
Your decision should start with self-reflection: identify your academic strengths, genuine interests, and long-term career aspirations. A major that engages you will lead to better academic performance and professional satisfaction, far outweighing prestige alone.
Investigate the professional accreditation and migration opportunities attached to each major. For example, engineering, nursing, teaching, and social work often have clearer pathways to permanent residency, whereas general business degrees may not unless combined with a specific credential like CPA.
Consider the structure of the degree: some Go8 universities offer flexible 'generalist' degrees (like Melbourne's Bachelor of Arts or Science) that allow you to sample fields before declaring a major, while others offer named professional degrees from day one. Your preferred learning style matters.
10. Using Rankings and Accreditation |
University-wide rankings like QS and THE are helpful guides, but subject-specific rankings and professional accreditations often matter more for employability. Always check if the program is recognised by the relevant Australian professional body, such as CPA Australia, Engineers Australia, ACS, AHPRA, or AACA.
A degree with strong accreditation can save you time and money on post-graduation bridging courses or exams. For instance, a CFA-affiliated finance degree may provide scholarship opportunities and exam exemptions, and an AMBA-accredited MBA carries global prestige.
Do not base your decision solely on brand; investigate the teaching staff's research impact, the availability of internships, and the alumni network in your target industry. The best major for you is one that bridges your passion with a clear professional outcome.
11. Conclusion and Final Tips |
