📚 Safest States for International Students in the U.S. & Top Colleges |
When planning to study in the United States, international students and their families naturally prioritise personal safety. The perception of crime in America, amplified by media coverage, can be unsettling. However, the reality is far more nuanced: many states and college towns boast exceptionally low violent crime rates, robust campus security, and welcoming communities. This guide identifies some of the safest states according to FBI crime statistics and public safety indexes, and pairs them with reputable colleges and universities, helping you make an informed, confident decision about where to pursue your education.
1. Why Campus Safety Is a Priority for International Students |
Studying abroad already involves adapting to a new language, culture, and academic system. Feeling physically safe allows you to focus on learning and building relationships rather than navigating fear. A low-crime environment also means fewer restrictions on campus life, such as walking back from the library late at night or exploring the surrounding town independently. Moreover, US universities are legally required to publish annual safety reports under the Clery Act, giving you transparent data to compare.
2. How We Evaluate State Safety |
Our ranking draws primarily on the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data, considering violent crime rates per 100,000 residents and property crime rates. We also incorporate the United States Peace Index and state-level safety perceptions from surveys. Critically, we look beyond raw figures to college-town realities: a state may have large cities with higher crime, but many excellent universities are situated in peaceful suburbs or small towns. The list below focuses on states with consistently low statewide violent crime and a campus culture of safety.
3. New Hampshire: Consistently Ranked #1 |
New Hampshire frequently tops the list of safest states, with a violent crime rate roughly one-third of the national average. Its small cities like Portsmouth and college towns like Durham exude a New England charm where neighbours know each other. The state's low population density and strong community policing contribute to a tranquil environment. Dartmouth College, an Ivy League member in Hanover, sits in a quintessentially safe, walkable town surrounded by nature.

10. Practical Tips for Staying Safe on Campus |
Beyond choosing a safe state, personal habits dramatically enhance your security. Utilise campus escort services or safety shuttles when returning late. Download your university's official safety app for real-time alerts and quick 911 dialing. Always lock your dorm room and never prop open building doors. Familiarise yourself with blue-light emergency phone locations and attend orientation safety workshops. Finally, stay informed through local police blotters and the Clery report specific to your institution, and trust your intuition — if a situation feels off, remove yourself promptly.
